They Might Be Giants on Tour

They Might Be Giants have been playing together since 1982 — and writing their playful, witty songs as a duo even longer — so the band's onstage chemistry isn't in question. Hearing the Johns (John Flansburgh and John Linnell) banter between songs is a treat in and of itself, but the real spectacle is witnessing their mind meld as they pull lyrically and musically knotty cuts from their catalog of a few dozen albums, EPs and compilations. Although the Johns started out as a pair backed by drum machine and prerecorded cassette, they've been a band since the '90s and are currently backed by longtime members Dan Miller on guitar, Danny Weinkauf on bass and Marty Beller on drums. They're just as likely to go into a stormy Middle Eastern inspired rock-out during their famous version of "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)," as to strip back to acoustic guitar (Flansburgh) and baritone sax (Linnell) for the morbid fan favorite "Older." And with a large oeuvre including kids' songs (they won a Grammy for 2008's Here Come the 123s) and film and TV themes (they won another Grammy for Malcolm in the Middle's "Boss of Me"), TMBG have limitless ways to delight and surprise an audience.

They Might Be Giants in Concert

John Flansburgh and John Linnell met as teens growing up in Lincoln, Massachusetts, and began writing songs together in high school. They parted ways for college, but reunited in Brooklyn in 1981 when (somewhat by design) they moved into the same apartment building on the same day. Thus began an incredibly fruitful and truly creative career in music. As They Might Be Giants gained a local fandom for their atypical instruments and unusual subject matter — their synthy 1986 self-titled debut included songs called "(She Was A) Hotel Detective" and "Youth Culture Killed My Dog" — they also experimented with distribution methods. For years, they used local newspapers to advertise a phone number that would greet callers with new songs and fake ads. That answering machine service, dubbed Dial-A-Song, foreshadowed their pioneering use of the internet. TMBG released the first MP3-only album in 1999, and began podcasting in 2005. They also found early success in film and TV after signing with Elektra in 1989 and seeing their 1990 LP Flood go platinum thanks to their MTV-supported single "Birdhouse in Your Soul." Their cover of the Four Lads' "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" wound up getting animated for Steven Spielberg's Tiny Toon Adventures along with "Particle Man," and they subsequently wrote or performed songs for Malcolm in the Middle, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Dexter's Laboratory and more. TMBG were even Tony-nominated for their work on SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical. Beginning in 2002 with the album No!, the Johns found success writing children's music and have interspersed their regular flow of rock-oriented albums with family fare. They Might Be Giants continue to be remarkably prolific, releasing three albums in 2018 alone: I Like Fun, My Murdered Remains and The Escape Team.

TMBG Family Show a Stinker (Take 2)

by Beatrix on 7/16/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

(Apologies. First attempt was disrupted and cut off due to automatic computer functions, but, perhaps, transmitted during edit of review.) A fan of the band going back to my college days in the latter 1/2 of the eighties makes it disappointing to tell the ugly truth here. My family and I left 1/2 hour into the show because it was so bad. Playing songs from a kids' lp and acknowledging kids in the audience alone does not create a kids' show. Neither does requesting enthusiasm rather than generating that response. That's when you know you lost.

    poor sound quality

by cherip88 on 7/16/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

The lyrics are what make TMBG so great, but they were completely unintelligible during this show. Instead the guitars were overwhelming.

    Flood show

by destroyalltacos on 7/15/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

I've only seen TMBG live a few other times, but each time they put on a pretty good show, full of energy and tight musicianship, and this was no exception. Flood was one of the first albums I ever owned, so the portion of the show that was the whole album in sequence was what I was most looking forward to, and they pulled it off really well. As far as the non-Flood portion, I was a little disappointed in a lack of pre-90's material (Ana Ng or She's An Angel would've been nice), but otherwise they generally hit all the other fan favorites. I'd never been to Berklee Performance Center before, and it's a nice-looking, clean venue with pretty good sound. I'm not particularly a fan of going to a rock show and sitting down the whole time, but the seats were comfortable, and during the encore the band invited everyone to get up and stand towards the front of the stage anyway.

I've never seen TMBGs in concert before, always loved their music and their quirkiness . concert was great, they spoke to the audience, made us laugh, played a lot.. lots of energy..they also responded to the audience's enthusiasm as it was a Berkley School of Music crowd. Would love to see them again...

    Rocking

by BlackHatMan on 7/15/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

I've wanted to see They Might Be Giants for years now and they didn't disappoint. Celebrating their album Flood playing it straight through was the concert experience everyone talks about and never gets. I was surprised how hard they rock with some off the chart drumming, but not surprised by the humor and great music.

The Giants put on a great show!

by CaptainBig on 7/15/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

They Might Be Giants put on a fantastic show at Berklee, with a great retelling of Flood and some of their more recent (and no less awesome) work. We sat in the front row of the balcony at the Berklee Performing Arts Center and felt like we were on top of the band, great seats. From where we sat, it felt like a really small and intimate venue though, looking over our shoulders, the seats went up and back a long way.

They Might Be Giants did not disappoint!!

by dlrhlr on 7/13/09Beaumont Club - Kansas City

After 30 + years listening to their musical genius via CD's, my husband, 17 yr. old daughter and I ventured forth to witness them perform live. The Beaumont Club in Westport was a perfect venue. Lots of space, very friendly staff, excellent sound. The John's high energy level and sense of fun engaged us all throughout the performance. Completely enjoyed the show and hope they return soon to Kansas City.

    First Timer Seeing Giants

by KCMOShow on 7/12/09Beaumont Club - Kansas City

The opening act was really, really bad. I turned to two fisted drinking to self medicate to make it through it. This was the first time I had ever seen They Might Be Giants and I had to say it was a very good show! I did not know their music but you could defiantly tell they are two very accomplished singers/songwriters. They engaged the crowd very well and played for just under two hours. I will defiantly catch their show again the next time they are in town.

The phone inside her ribcage rings for me!

by JumpLittleChicken on 7/12/09Beaumont Club - Kansas City

Excellent show! Their "mistakes" increased the intimacy of their performance and showed that TMBG are truly a band "of the people, for the people." They did play "Twisting" out of sequence, but no one seemed to mind (except me, but just for a moment).

    They Might Be Giants Delivered!

by Melarlo on 7/12/09Beaumont Club - Kansas City

TMBG put on one of the best shows I have seen! From bringing in local musicians to the 2nd encore they truly played as if there were 60,000 people to impress. Loved every minute of it!

One of the best TMBG shows I've seen in years!

Nothin' quite like a band playin' through your favorite album of theirs while you're plastered. :)
