They Might Be Giants on Tour

They Might Be Giants have been playing together since 1982 — and writing their playful, witty songs as a duo even longer — so the band's onstage chemistry isn't in question. Hearing the Johns (John Flansburgh and John Linnell) banter between songs is a treat in and of itself, but the real spectacle is witnessing their mind meld as they pull lyrically and musically knotty cuts from their catalog of a few dozen albums, EPs and compilations. Although the Johns started out as a pair backed by drum machine and prerecorded cassette, they've been a band since the '90s and are currently backed by longtime members Dan Miller on guitar, Danny Weinkauf on bass and Marty Beller on drums. They're just as likely to go into a stormy Middle Eastern inspired rock-out during their famous version of "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)," as to strip back to acoustic guitar (Flansburgh) and baritone sax (Linnell) for the morbid fan favorite "Older." And with a large oeuvre including kids' songs (they won a Grammy for 2008's Here Come the 123s) and film and TV themes (they won another Grammy for Malcolm in the Middle's "Boss of Me"), TMBG have limitless ways to delight and surprise an audience.

They Might Be Giants in Concert

John Flansburgh and John Linnell met as teens growing up in Lincoln, Massachusetts, and began writing songs together in high school. They parted ways for college, but reunited in Brooklyn in 1981 when (somewhat by design) they moved into the same apartment building on the same day. Thus began an incredibly fruitful and truly creative career in music. As They Might Be Giants gained a local fandom for their atypical instruments and unusual subject matter — their synthy 1986 self-titled debut included songs called "(She Was A) Hotel Detective" and "Youth Culture Killed My Dog" — they also experimented with distribution methods. For years, they used local newspapers to advertise a phone number that would greet callers with new songs and fake ads. That answering machine service, dubbed Dial-A-Song, foreshadowed their pioneering use of the internet. TMBG released the first MP3-only album in 1999, and began podcasting in 2005. They also found early success in film and TV after signing with Elektra in 1989 and seeing their 1990 LP Flood go platinum thanks to their MTV-supported single "Birdhouse in Your Soul." Their cover of the Four Lads' "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" wound up getting animated for Steven Spielberg's Tiny Toon Adventures along with "Particle Man," and they subsequently wrote or performed songs for Malcolm in the Middle, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Dexter's Laboratory and more. TMBG were even Tony-nominated for their work on SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical. Beginning in 2002 with the album No!, the Johns found success writing children's music and have interspersed their regular flow of rock-oriented albums with family fare. They Might Be Giants continue to be remarkably prolific, releasing three albums in 2018 alone: I Like Fun, My Murdered Remains and The Escape Team.

    Flood in all it's glory!

Once again TMBG did not let us down! Everything from the humor to the songs themselves, it was spectacular!

    TMBG Flood album live

    by Nick4321 on 10/11/09Vic Theatre - Chicago

TMBG has always been a unique group, and this was no exception. Their creative use of instruments in the studio has always been an interesting melange to say the least. On stage however, their stage presence was a little lacking (however they had just done a full kids show just 4 hours before) so I have to give them a few kudos for soldiering on through a full show and 3 encores. It was interesting to hear the entire "Flood" album played with some tidbits from other albums (including "Here Comes Science"). They even kept The Avatars (sock puppets) from what I assume was the kids show for the evening show, which provided a little levity (which is to be expected in a TMBG show.

They Might Be Giants Sat Night

    by ER09 on 10/11/09Vic Theatre - Chicago

This was a lively and fun event -- They Might Be Giants is worth seeing live. Too bad the bass was so loud that it was impossible to hear the clever words of most of the songs. I couldn't even figure out what some of them were about. This didn't matter to the vast majority of the audience who knew all the songs already, but the rest of us would have enjoyed the concert more if the sound had been better balanced. My group consisted of people from age 14-69. Everyone had the same comment. Same thing happened at the Decemberist concert at the Riviera on Thursday night. Same sound person?

TMBG knows how to put on a fantastic show. You can tell when you watch them that they take pride in providing more than just live versions of the songs. You never know what you'll get when you see them because they constantly improvise, and that's half the experience.

They Might Be (a good opening act)

by TheAvatars on 10/11/09Vic Theatre - Chicago

Those They Might Be Giants guys are alright. They were a good opening act for us--The Avatars--but, in contradiction to our five star rating, We wouldn't give them five stars. We mean, being that it WAS a show celebrating the 20th anniversary of the last time they were a good band, the show was five stars BUT we wouldn't say that the band is worth five stars. Then again, we wouldn't rate any band that's not They Might Be--I mean, THE AVATARS. We wouldn't rate any band that's not The Avatars at five stars. Make sure you come see The Avatars perform your favorite They Might Be Giants songs the next time They Might Be Giants plays in your area. ALSO make sure you check out our new album in 2010: "Rock Out with Your Sock Out". (But yeah, the show was fun and They Might Be Giants were top form as always.)

    TMBG rocked the Vic!

    by MusicalMom725 on 10/11/09Vic Theatre - Chicago

What a great concert! Even though the music was written with kids in mind, the adults in our group enjoyed it just as much as the little ones. Excellent!

This was my nine year old daughters first "real" concert and she loved it! My wife and I thought it was great. The Vic has great sound and seating. They Might Be Giants spanned a large age spectrum with a enjoyable show for all!

    Very Entertaining

by Guod on 10/11/09Vic Theatre - Chicago

This concert made for a very interactive and highly entertaining evening. Although it was billed as a "Flood" show, there were other songs from that era (and some more recent stuff) that were also inserted that served to makle it even more enjoyable. The fact that the crowd/audience came to the show anticipating and prepared to have a good time (no surprise) obviously helped tremendously, and credit for that clearly has to go to TMBG as well.

    TMBG do not Disappoint

by WHTJunior on 10/10/09The Pageant - St Louis

This was my first They Might Be Giants show, and as many people had told me prior to the event, they put on a great show. They put a lot of effort into the show and have fun, which shows in their act. Their rendition of all of the Flood songs weren't exact replicas of the recorded tracks, but yet they still retained enough recognition so that you could sing along. They played to a sold-out crowd, with a double encore that ended with the multi-song, Fingertips.

    They Might Really Be Giants

by thisdoug87 on 10/10/09The Pageant - St Louis

1st time for me to visit the Pageant Theatre and first time to see the Giants live. I missed them by just a bad decision in 1990 in London.... Anyway, nice to see all of the old material and people mouthing all of the words, great people watching, lots of interpretive dancing in the balconies! The band rocks from the 1st song and energetic performance of "Elements" to the much awaited (by me) "Fingertips". All of the album "Flood" was covered and enjoyed by the audience. I always preferred Apollo 18 and they performed some tasty tunes from that album, too! I purchased the "Science" cd/dvd for my kids to watch and I am enjoying the new songs as much as I did the old. I thought the concert was a great idea and very affordable entertainment. I would do it again and recommend it to a friend. Thanks for the free bumper stickers!! The band- seemed to enjoy the music and the crowd, they were a pleasure to watch and very friendly with the crowd. Stayed around to let us see them after the show. Watch out for puppets and clarinets, which were probably the biggest suprise that I enjoyed the most!! I say more puppets and more clarinets... The sound/lighting-was perfect. Just loud enough to lose yourself in the moment and not so showy to enjoy the music. Vocals could be mixed clearer to project over the bass and other instruments, or perhaps just where I sat. The venue-was nice. Easy to get to and not a bad seat in the house. Refreshments were available and easy to access. Don't take a camera, a lady in the line ahead of me had a hassle with hers!

The best show in the history of ever

by SassyCakes on 10/10/09The Pageant - St Louis

I bought these tickets for my husband for his birthday. I've always wanted to see TMBG live, and the hubs has seen them several times, so we were really excited. I was absolutely blown away by how entertaining and energetic these guys are live. It was the best show we've ever seen and couldn't have been more excited. The Avatars cracked me up. The show would have been awesome without the puppets, but that just took the funny to a whole new level. Come back soon, TMBG!!!!

    TMBG Flood!

by Callificent on 10/10/09The Pageant - St Louis

Every time I see TMBG in concert, they get better and better. The Sock Puppet Avatars were a nice addition to the crew. It was a packed house, and the Johns played to, for, and with the audience.

TMBG has done better, will do better again

by danconia on 10/10/09The Pageant - St Louis

I've seen Them 22 times now, many of those shows at the Pageant. They simply had a bad night. The stage seemed foreign, and many of the transitions were clumsy. They weren't having as much fun up there, and it showed. Less bantering with the audience than usual. But They love STL, so I hope to see Them the next time They come near.

    just like college again!

by Degan on 7/31/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

The lyrics all came back, as did the driving down the road singing at the top of my lungs. We've added the kids cds to our repritoire, blending college and parenthood, and they did the same in the show. It inspired us to find a family show to share with our 5year old.

    TMBG coming home to Berklee

by BostonDawn on 7/20/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

My husband and I saw They Might Be Giants at the House of Blues in Orange County, CA, last year. The show started late and when the band did come on, it seemed like they didn't want to be there. They sang the songs by rote without much feeling or enjoyment. Seeing them here at Berklee Performance Center in Boston, MA, was a completely different show. They were excited to be there, interacted with the audience and totally jammed on stage. They played Flood in its entirety to the delight of all the TMBG fans.

    Great Show!

by bmac10 on 7/16/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

What a treat! I did not know they were going to reprise the entire Flood album which is my favorite album of theirs. (Oops I said album - does that give my age away??) Musicianship was great, very lively show. Only downer was sound quality which was puzzling since I have heard the sound system there before and it is capable of sounding much better. If you are a TMBG fan it is a must see show!!

    Eh, it was ok

by GinaF on 7/16/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

I've loved TMBG for years, but apparently when I signed up for the "all ages" show, that meant they were going to do mostly their kid music. They do music for Disney Channel these days as I hear, which I was unaware of previous to buying tickets. The only songs they did that I knew were Particle Man, Dr. Worm and Istanbul. No Birdhouse in Your Soul, no Don't Let's Start, no Ana Ng, no Boss of me, and no the Statue Got Me High. I even brought signs with each song's name written on it, which they completely ignored. They only played for an hour and a half with no warmup, so I didn't feel it was worth it.
