About

The Waterboys have been led by Scottish singer and guitarist Mike Scott since the 1980s and have evolved through many line-ups, winning a fearsome concert reputation along the way. Indisputably one of the best live bands in the world, the 2025 group features double keyboard players Brother Paul from Memphis and James Hallawell from Cornwall, and is grounded by killer Irish rhythm section Aongus Ralston (bass) and Eamon Ferris (drums). They reconfigure music from all stages of the band's career, from the early "big music" of The Whole Of The Moon and classic album This Is The Sea through the roots-inspired Fisherman's Blues era and the run of in-form records that have poured out since 2015's Nashville-recorded Modern Blues, taking in soul, funk, country-rock and any other kind of music they care to play - and always rooted in Scott's songwriting mastery and a sense of exploration. Waterboys songs feature in the current or recent live sets of The War On Drugs, Bleachers, U2, The Killers, Tom Jones and many other acts but no one plays Waterboys quite like The Waterboys themselves. This year the band is touring their audacious new album on Sun records, Life, Death And Dennis Hopper, a brilliant concept record which tells the story of the maverick American actor and trailblazer. Audiences can expect Waterboys classics, new directions, drama, improvisation and musical fireworks.

  • Incredible!

    by Audiencemember1 on 9/22/13Wilbur Theatre - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

This was one of the best shows I ever saw. Incredible songs and musicians. I will RUN to the next show. I couldn't find a review in the Boston Globe the next day which amazes me.

  • One of the best live acts I've ever seen.

I've been a fan of the Waterboys since I was about 13 (I'm in my 20s now). When I saw the band was doing their first North American continental tour in six years I definitely wasn't going to miss out on checking them out live. The tickets were more than reasonably priced, the band's merchandise was even more reasonable and they put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen. This concert is going to be hard to top for me, it was that special. Mike Scott's voice hasn't change hardly at all over the years, and if anything has gotten even better. The musicians in the band are top-notch and they played a perfect set. I can't recommend catching this tour enough.

  • The Waterboys were on fire!

This was a solid, emotional and pure performance. Theatrical and poetic...it totally rocked.

  • Keep this Appointment!!!

by Insearchofarose on 3/25/13Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Mike Scott was wonderful, as usual. The fact that he put a whole CD of disparate WB Yeats' poems set to music is a feat unto itself. That they are all great songs is another as well. Unfortunately, he will most likely not get any major recognition for this ( a Grammy nomination, yeah, right). But his fans don't care. We love him and the fantastic Steve Wickham! The band of local musicians that subbed for the European Waterboys seemed like they'd been playing with Mike for years. The only problem was with the vocals. Mike's was hard to hear in the beginning, but was then corrected, but the female singer was never amped properly and some of the songs suffered for it.

  • Waterboys are a must see

  • Been waiting to see the Waterboys

by Thatgirlny on 3/23/13Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I have been waiting to see Mike Scott & the Waterboys since about 1985 or '86 and finally Wednesday night at Town Hall my wait was over! It was well worth the wait! What an outstanding show! Loud the way I like it! There isn't anything I didn't like about this show! Mike Scott has a great stage presence coupled with his uber creativity that spills out song after song. Really dig his style! Nice fashion sense. The band of musicians gave a stellar performance! And oh that fiddle!!!! The venue is near perfect, friendly attendants good sound and not a bad seat in the place in my humble opinion. Can't wait to see them again. [ perhaps this coming summer!] Thanks for a great performance!!!!!!!!!

  • Yeats, Scott, Poetry, Music

by TinkerCreekGirl on 3/23/13Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

What a gorgeous show. I was lucky to have been there.

  • by csnmusic on 3/22/13Town Hall - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

performance outstanding - expected to hear entire new album (which I like a lot) - but also expected more than two classic songs - two encores were exhilarating - considering how infrequently i get to see Waterboys, i had looked forward to more of that

  • exceptional evening

Mike Scott is so impressive, this concert blew us away!

  • The Waterboys new show is brilliant!

by Yeatsfan on 3/22/13Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Fabulous music from a group of true professionals. High energy, very generous with their encores after three standing ovations. Such amazing talent. Don't miss the U.S. tour! GREAT night.

  • Rocking out to poetry

by Rockinyeats on 3/22/13Town Hall - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Its always an interesting and challenging adventure when you hear new music for the first time live. Add to that the completxity and verbosity of Yeats and that challenge is multiplied. Mike Scott and the Waterboys were up to the task, presenting An Appointment with Mr. Yates in its entirety. Ranging in musical genres from rock to Irish folk, to folk and blues, Yeats words were musically set in gorgeous arrangements. The concert included a great degree of theatricality with masks worn for some songs and the performers often walking on and off staff in the middle of songs. Mike Scott had his dance moves down as well as other gestures. The tunes were listenable and the presentation wonderful. Go see the Waterboys-they said they are coming back to NY in the summer. The encores were old Waterboys tunes with Don't Bang the Drum as the standout.

have wanted to see then for 20+ years. although i didn't know most of the music from their new album (which comprised the bulk of this concert), it didn't matter. they are such a great band, it was an amazing show. plan to go again this summer.

  • Mike Scott's New Waterboys Are the Best Yet

    by Dan4456 on 3/22/13Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen almost every incarnation of The Waterboys since 1987 and this is the best yet. I hope they tour more in the coming months. It would be a shame for Mike not to share this set and group of musicians with more people.

  • Mike Scott abd the Waterboys are amazing!

by AngusMcDuff on 3/22/13Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Absolutely tremendous show - band could not be tighter, tremendous musicianship nu Mike Scott, Steve Wicman and the whole band. Putting Yeats poems to Celtic/Rock music worked perfectly - really interesting. If you get the chance to catch this show, do not hesitate - go, you'll have an amazing evening. Will definitely check them out next time the are in town.

  • The Waterboys....inspiring yet again!

by dinakaliko on 3/22/13Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Town Hall's show on March 20th was better than expected! I gotta buy the new CD! Can't wait to see them perform at WDST Radio Woodstock!

  • Waterboys did short concert at Town Hall!

by MariettaG on 3/22/13Town Hall - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

The Waterboys were very good and the trip down memory lane was fun, however it was a very short concert--I expected more music. It was under 2 hours long and they didn't do much of their old stuff that I wanted to hear. The sound system was off and the roadies were on the stage adjusting guitars during several numbers...seemed like they were not well rehearsed..and the "Whole of the Moon" lacked energy. Lead singer was a lot of fun and the fiddle was excellent...would have liked to just see more...not worth the $$$ I paid.

Great show - good band and very clever setting of Yeats poems; sound system not so great

  • An Appointment with Mr. Yeats was Magical

by MargiCola on 3/22/13Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

A truly remarkable show but the highlight for me was hearing the encore of "The Whole of the Moon". It was the first time I heard it live in 25 years.
