THE TING TINGS IN CONCERT:

After a two-year hiatus, British dance pop duo The Ting Tings reemerged bolder and better than ever in 2014 with their disco-infused third album, Super Critical. They proved they’ve still got it on stage too – their glammed-up sound gets concertgoers on their feet as they deliver funky guitar riffs and dance-worthy beats on songs like "Do It Again" and "Wrong Club". The multi-talented duo alternates between several different instruments -- frontwoman Katie White expertly loops her vocals while bouncing around between the guitar and the cowbell, while Jules De Martino has been known to play the drums and guitar at the same time. For just two people they create a surprisingly colossal sound. Their spunky dance pop and mood-enhancing LED light show never fail to blow ticket buyers away.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Katie White and Jules De Martino formed dance pop outfit The Ting Tings in 2006 in Manchester, England. They started out playing house parties and small clubs before self-releasing the vinyl single "That's Not My Name" in 2007. The track quickly amassed millions of views on their Myspace page, and by the end of the year they had inked a deal with Columbia Records. "That's Not My Name" reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart just as their 2008 follow-up single "Shut Up And Let Me Go" was earning them tons of new fans after being featured in an Apple commercial. Later in 2008 they released their debut album We Started Nothing, which hit No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart. In 2009 they toured extensively as an opening act for Pink and racked up several awards and nominations, including the Ivor Novello Award for Best Album and a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. The following year they moved to Berlin and spent eight months recording their sophomore album, 2012's Sounds From Nowheresville, which showed off a darker and more electronic side. After taking a couple of years to refocus their sound they moved to Ibiza to record their third album, 2014's Super Critical, which was co-produced by Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor. Influenced by pre-EDM nightlife and '70s disco, the record treats fans to danceable, Diana Ross-inspired tracks that are only made better when heard live in concert.

  • The Ting Tings rocked the house!!

by Ronthepharmacyguy on 4/11/12Paradise Rock Club - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

The Ting Tings are a couple of the hardest working musicians you'll ever see - constantly changing instruments - many times playing two at a time - which is probably to be expected when you're just a 2-person band and you have no extra band members for your concert tour. Very high energy.....and passionate about their music. You can tell that they are very much into their music right now. Also, the Paradise Rock Club was a great venue for the concert - smaller concert hall, located just outside the downtown area of Boston.

Brilliant! They came on stage and rocked. They played a nice mix of old and new, and certainly played all the songs that they fans wanted to hear. The setup was simple, but awesome.. lights sending the crowd into a frenzy with tracks like Shut Up and Let me Go, and Fruit Machine. Katie rocked with guitars and then went nuts on the base drum - electric!

  • Great but need new songs!

    by matteo79 on 8/6/09CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

I saw the Ting Tings about a year ago and while the order of the setlist has changed and they've spruced up some of the arrangements, they're still playing the same handful of songs that can be found on their album "We Started Nothing." They're fantastic performers and the sound was great, but it would have been nice to hear something new after a whole year. As for the venue, this was my first time at Club Nokia and I was not very happy with it. They seem to fit way more people per square foot than most other venues. We arrived before the first band (of three) started playing and we still had to stand/sit far away from the action.

  • Great DJ

    by KBay88 on 8/6/09CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Club Nokia was a great/intimate venue to see the Ting Tings peform. Hottub and Natalie Portman's Shaved Head set the stage for an electro-inspired night of fun. My only complaint was that security only allowed the first 400 entrants to stand in the closest area, when there was clearly room for a few hundred more. We were right up against the railings of the second section, and we still had a great view, but not much dancing room, and when you're at a venue like club nokia, dancing is a must!

  • We walk! So good!

by mattoirish on 8/6/09CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

I actually had a dream the night before and in that dream I was told that "We Walk" is a great song. I hadn't really listened to it before, and then the opening song ended up being that. It was pretty crazy and made a great concert even better!

  • Ting Tings great as always

by mordakaijones on 8/6/09CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

This is the second time I've seen The Ting Tings, and they played for a packed house in a great venue in Club Nokia. The show was a bit more refined this time around, but both were high energy and danceable right from the very beginning.

  • The Ting Tings Dance Party

by Supershane on 8/6/09CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I've seen this band about 5 times now and the shows keep getting better every time! The Club Nokia show was a non-stop "Dance Party" and a room full of energy from start to finish! Supporting act Hot Tub is raunchy but, that's what makes them Hot Tub and they delivered a fun appetizer of music to get it going! Natalie Portmans Shaved Head brought a second course of fun and beats to wiggle and bounce to. Bottom Line ... this is one of the funnest shows that I've ever seen at Club Nokia and if you have not seen the Ting Tings live... well, you don't know what you're missing!

  • who DRESSED them?

by lizzerd on 8/6/09CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

i had heard that she was super hot from my friend, but i have to disagree. the guy on the other hand...oh yeah. but i didnt go for hotness level. it was a typical crowded show but nokia theater is awesome and the band sounded just like their cd....but for real, who dressed this chick? let's not talk about hottub or natalie portman's shaved head. thanks.

  • The Ting Tings Rule!

by soullshakedown on 8/5/09CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

The Ting Tings were Fantastic on stage! I loved their energy and especially loved the way they managed to extend each song with a good jam between them. They are definitely a band id recommend to a friend, and see again! :)

  • Ting Tings Kickess Ass!

Fantastic gig, fantastic imagery, superb, polished performance. Catch the Ting TIngs in small clubs now, they will only get bigger.

  • Absolutely blew me away!

    by jdog417 on 8/5/09CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing sound, visual impact, and most of all unbelievable energy! How does all that come out of one dude and that little chick? You gotta experience the show or you just don't get what they're about!

  • pretty good, but pretty serious

by college on 8/5/09CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

They're good at getting the crowd going and sound better live than on the CD (although for That's Not My Name the different voices weren't as clear) but they stopped too often to ask for applause. Quite annoying. Kind of a short set for a headliner, but they only had one album out so it's understandable.

  • Ting Tings rocked LA Live

by Nanami on 8/5/09CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

The Ting Tings were absolutely amazing at Club Nokia!! It has definitely been one of the best shows that I have ever attended. They even had two incredibly entertaining opening bands, Hottub and Natalie Portman's Shaved Head. Everything about the show was great from the lighting, the dancing, the engagement with the crowd, an awesome performance!!!

  • The Ting Tings and Openers Rocked!

by Taydawg on 8/5/09CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

This show was one of my favorites in recent memory. The opening band Hottub was so surprisingly unbelievable...I'd never heard of them before and midway through their set I knew I'd be getting a CD. By the end I had to get a T-shirt too. They're like a female Beastie Boys by way of Salt and Peppa and Lil Kim. SOoooOOO Good. Natalie Portman's Shaved Head had an awesome band name. And The Ting Tings put on a completely incredible show. I have to mention how good Club Nokia is. I'll definitely be looking to go back to this venue as it's the perfect size for the increasingly large mid-class of bands like the Ting Tings that can't play small venues but aren't yet at ampitheater level. And quite frankly it's more enjoyable that way. The crowd was all completely into it and the music and lights were simply amazing. Great show all around

  • Awesome performance

by Matelyan on 8/5/09CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I loved their cd, but had my doubts as to how they would sound live. Well put all those worries to rest, because this dynamic duo is absolutely amazing. I highly recommend checking them out if they make a stop in your town. If I hadn't seen Coldplay already this year, I would easily nominate this as best show of the year.

  • Fantastic show and venue!

by acappel on 8/5/09CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

The TIng Tings were fantastic with some great visuals behind the group! Very entertaining, and I loved it when the drummer played Ghostbusters!

  • The Ting Tings killed it!

by savvykat on 8/5/09CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Having seen a lot of dance rock bands over the years I've come to keep an open mind about whether or not they will be any good live. The Ting Tings are awesome live. Katie's voice is solid and beautiful and the music was tight. Getting their start playing parties has provided them with great showmanship and they manage to fill the stage with just the two of them. They jammed, switched up arrangements and got the whole house dancing. They project confidence and you can sense that they are having as much fun as you are.
