Disappointed
by CA on 3/11/25Rating: 2 out of 5The Thorn is a visually ambitious retelling of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, blending theatrical drama, dance, and multimedia effects. While the production certainly has its strengths, it also leaves much to be desired in execution.
Strengths:
•The acting was strong, with committed performances that brought emotion to key scenes.
•The crucifixion and resurrection were particularly well done, creating the most impactful moments of the show.
Weaknesses & Concerns:
•Old John’s narration felt misplaced, with unnecessary jokes that took away from the gravity of the story. It raised the question: Is this meant to be a comedy or a serious depiction of Christ’s life?
•Major Biblical moments were missing, which made the storyline feel incomplete for those familiar with scripture.
•Production quality felt more like a high-end college or high school-level performance rather than a fully professional theatrical experience.
•Technical issues like poor theater speakers made it difficult to fully engage with the story.
•Audience disruptions were an issue, with people arriving as late as 40 minutes into the show, causing distractions.
•The intermission donation request by the producer seemed poorly timed. While charity is important, asking for donations during intermission disrupted the theatrical experience and felt inappropriate.
Final Verdict:
While The Thorn has emotional high points and strong performances, it struggles with inconsistent tone, technical flaws, and a disjointed approach to storytelling. It’s a decent production, but it lacks the polish and depth that one would expect from a professional-level retelling of Christ’s life.
Rating: ★★☆☆☆ (2/5) – Worth seeing for its best moments, but expect some frustrating elements.
