    Doesn't live up to expectations

by Iheartshoes212 on 12/5/15DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

I was so excited to see this musical, but the show really fell short. I didn't like how they changed the musical around. The casting for Maria was terrible. She had a nice enough voice, but the way she played Maria was beyond annoying. She was always flailing around; she made the character seem immature. It was not attractive; it made it hard to believe the Capitain would ever fall in love with her.

How do you solve a problem like poor acting?

by BTillman on 12/5/15DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

The Sound of Music is my favorite musical of all time, and I love the movie. No lead actress or actor can be expected to measure up to the Andrews/Plummer iconic performances, but it would be nice to have some believable acting. My expectations were high, however, after the opening scene in the Abbey with the excellent acting and voices of the Mother Superior and the sisters; "Maria's" lovely opening number in the mountains showed promise. In the ensuing scene between Maria and the Mother, the lead actress's problems with her poor posture, coltish carriage and lack of gravitas made it simply hard to watch her, much less believe that her Maria could calm children in a storm, create "Doe A Dear" on the spot, befriend Liesl, dispatch the Baroness back to Vienna or - for sure - ever attract the attention of Georg except to be sent back to the Abbey for sheer tiresomeness. It was disappointing. She has a lovely voice and it is my hope that she can get an acting coach who helps her develop from an awkward adolescent-like presence into maturity, metaphorically speaking. The role of Maria deserves it.

    worth seeing once

by Maidenman on 11/8/15Fair Park Music Hall - Dallas

Very good production. Sets are amazing and actors are fine. Its a classic show tis worth it to see some of the well know songs but the show drags in places. Its a show everyone should see once.

    Potential for excellence

by Luvartz on 10/20/15Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - Boise

The set was a feast for the eyes, absolutely sumptuous! The production had the potential for excellence. I was disappointed that they didn't give more time to develop the love between Maria and Captain Von Trapp. It was definitely rushed. Other than that, it was an utterly amazing experience!

    The set design was amazing!

by Anonymous on 9/18/15Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - Boise

The set literally took my breath away. When Maria's first scene opened I literally gasped in awe from the beautiful scenery. The cast did a remarkable job and myself and my teenage girls did not want it to end. I have seen many shows on stage and this is by far my most favorite that I have ever seen. This production is not to be missed.

Absolutely top-notch production. The sets & costumes were outstanding and the talent was awesome! We weren't sure we would enjoy seeing Sound of Music yet again, having seen and been involved in several productions of this show, but we were pleasantly surprised to find that we loved it and were totally involved in the show! It was a perfect evening for us!

by anicknames on 9/17/15Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - Boise

The performance was absolutely fabulous. This was the first live performance of The Sound of Music that I've seen. I was a bit concerned that I'd be disappointed. It was as good as or better than the movie version.

The Sound of Music Performance -- Super!

by CasualTheatreFan on 9/17/15Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - Boise

It was an excellent performance. Having good voices for this play is a must, and they came through. My only regret was that I hadn't invited some friends to accompany us -- they would have enjoyed it too.

Not your typical "Sound of Music"

by PlaidJinx on 9/17/15Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - Boise

We witnessed the first ever preview performance of director Jack O'Brien's new production of "The Sound of Music". He promised a new vision of the show without sacrificing any of the things that have made it so beloved for so many years, and he delivered on that promise. Every aspect of this production is absolutely top-notch. The scenery, the costumes, the lighting are stunning, and far better than one might expect for a touring production. The performances are fresh and new and like nothing you've ever seen before. Ben Davis' Captain Von Trapp eschews any of the tired of cliches that the role so easily invites, and breathes a new humanity into the character. Kerstin Anderson as Maria Rainer is not like any Maria I've ever seen (and I've seen a LOT!). From the moment she opened her mouth to sing I knew we were in for a treat. But it got even better as soon as she began to speak. Her Maria is so fresh that you'll forget that you already know the story. Other notable performances are from Ashley Brown as the Mother Abbess and Merwin Foard as the lovable yet cunning Max Detweiler. If you think you can skip this production because you've "already seen The Sound of Music" you are wrong. This one is definitely a must-see!

    Amazing Vocals!

by Jewelover on 9/17/15Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - Boise

The music and voices were phenomenal, as the acoustics in the Morrison Center are top notch. The actors, particularly the children, were very professional. I've only seen the movie version so some of the extra music and slight alterations from that version were a little different. Overall highly recommend. A highlight was the Reverend Mother's performance of Climb Every Mountain. Astounding :)
