About

The Shins are one of the most iconic American Indie bands of the 2000's, known for their classic brand of college rock. Their most recent album, Port of Morrow, was released in 2012, and the first single, titled "Simple Song," was featured in the 2013 season finale of the hit TV show How I Met Your Mother. The Shins treat ticket holders to concerts that brim with alternative and folk rock craftsmanship. In classic indie-rock style, The Shins’ stage sets are minimal, and the focus in is on the clever, introverted lyrics and dream-pop arrangements.

Formed in 1996 by singer-songwriter James Mercer, the band's deft lyrics and jangly pop sound are reminiscent of early R.E.M. The Shins' 2001 album Oh, Inverted World became one of the definitive indie albums of the early 2000s, and the single, “New Slang,” which played a prominent role in the film Garden State, helped the band achieve mainstream success. In a list compiled by Pitchfork of the best songs from 2000-2009, “New Slang” came in at No. 62. Their sophomore release, Chutes Too Narrow was named by Rolling Stone as one of the best albums of 2003. Following up was their third album in 2008, Wincing the Night Away, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. Throughout the band's four albums and nonstop tours, The Shins have explored new genres and different song structures. Multi-layered lyrics and high-production levels have been consistent features of the band and its concerts over the years, making The Shins a critically respected indie band throughout the entire music industry.

    Surprisingly sound great live!

by ADragon on 7/29/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

As I entered the venue I got a Shining hotel vibe from the aesthetic, but was pleasantly directed to where my seat would be for the evening. I was seated way at the top with not much of a view of the band mates faces. But brilliant job on the lighting, and sound was amazing from way up there. However it is an indoor venue and there was nowhere to smoke up other than the restroom in a rushed school like manner.

    Energetic

by Avid on 7/27/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

The shins put on a great live show - very energetic and amped. Loved the venue, the sound, the lighting, and the performance, of course. My only complaint is that the warm-up band, joseph, had their sound turned up too loud. It was like listening to a 45-minute scream. Painful.

    Quality Shins Concert

by harmony turmoil on 7/26/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

The Shins do not disappoint with their new and older songs. Well put together band. I miss the original drummer who kept a different vibe together. Bass player was good, yet recessed into the shadows, whereas an original was the front man. All really good musicians. Good experience.

    They Were Awesome!

by Don't Have a nickname on 7/26/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

I came along late to the Shins fan club. My wife turned me onto them when we started dating in 2010. I had never heard of them. I was an instant fan. I looked them up online, and read all about them. I was surprised to learn they were an older band. I was stoked as always to discover new music (new to me) but was bummed that I may not ever get to see them live. They did not disappoint! Lead singers voice - Incredible! Musicians - Amazing! No old, used up, should have hung it up a long time ago band here!! (like others I love) These guys were GREAT.

    Blinded by the Lights

by Hannah on 7/26/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

Literally had to shield our eyes from the scratching white strobe lights pointed directly at the audience. Some people were taking it in stride but it was totally a buzzkill for me and my date. Also, the opening singers were alright, but not good enough to bring back multiple times over the Shins' set.

    Fabulous!

by Greg the Gremmie on 7/26/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

I came in expecting to hear Oh, Inverted World in it's entirety and maybe a couple singles from the more recent albums, but I was blown away by the number of songs performed after the debut album. Just incredible. And a beautiful venue!

    The Shins + Joseph

by Lucia on 7/22/22Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

Second time seeing The Shins this year, they’re absolutely great live. Joseph was amazing as well, would definitely see both of them live again. My seats were in the balcony of The Orpheum and sound and visuals were solid from up there.

    Pretty Alright

by Big Fan on 7/21/22Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

The music is incredible, the show was... meh. I love the Shins music so much but I was shocked by how little energy they had live. The audience was so hyped to see them that the energy in the stands made the low energy on stage even more striking. Hope everything is alright with them behind the scenes. Glad I didn't pay for the expensive orchestra seats. The Orpheum is a great theater, but the seats are pretty small and tightly packed, so don't be tall or big!

    Grateful I Caught This Gig

by SoSaysI on 7/21/22Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

I had about a week in town between summer traveling and I’m so glad I caught The Shins in LA! I’d never seen them live before and they’ve always been on my bucket list. I loved the way they brought a bit of Portland with them and used Joseph as backup singers in a couple of songs. They felt really accessible and connected with the audience like the real people they are. James Mercer is my favorite song writer and looked amazing in those white jeans! Got to hear almost all my favorites- but then again every Shins song has been my favorite at some point.

First time seeing The Shins live and was not disappointed. James Mercer is a great songwriter and the performance followed that same expectation.

by Allie on 7/18/22SACRAMENTO MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM - Sacramento

Great show at the historic Memorial Auditorium in downtown Sacramento! (I graduated high school there many moons ago…) My heart was so happy! Introduced us to the band Joseph and we loved them too! Magical voices and the sweetest energy! Big thank you! Love you guys!

    Great show

by Ken on 7/18/22SACRAMENTO MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM - Sacramento

I generally do not like general admission shows and Ticketmasters GA announcement was warning was confusing - that there were some seats but most would be standing did not help. Also the tickets actually had a seat number making it more confusing. Do we wait in line and hope to snag a seat somewhere? Turns out there were plenty of seats in the “dress circle”. Got there after doors opened and claimed good seats that allowed us to go to floor when we wanted. Great service at the Mem Auditorium. Joseph was good opener, and the Shins put on an awesome show (albeit a little short at only 90 minutes).

First time at Sac. Memorial Auditorium

by CA Tune Head on 7/18/22SACRAMENTO MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM - Sacramento

Joseph was an incredible opener - even 1 short of their trip, the sound & harmonies were fantastic. The Shins, arguably one of the most recognizable sounds of the 2000’s, played well. Visually, their show aesthetic matched the album they played… Unfortunately either the speakers, or the sound tech, weren’t working right. Practically every song had horrendous feedback (like when two mics are too close together) that utterly overpowered the sound for many seconds at a time. It caused me to lose hearing in my right ear, which I’ve regained, but… My ears are still ringing terribly from it 3 days later. We left early because of this.

    Incredible Performance

by MarcoEsquaindolas on 2/11/18Red Rocks - Morrison

Such a beautifully orchestrated show. Seeing these guys live was not only on my Bucket List but also a dream come true. They played a lot of old stuff and I couldn't help but dance my ass off. Such a supremely weird band that fills my heart with a warm squishy feeling. So many concepts, I can't wait to see them again!
