The Shins are one of the most iconic American Indie bands of the 2000's, known for their classic brand of college rock. Their most recent album, Port of Morrow, was released in 2012, and the first single, titled "Simple Song," was featured in the 2013 season finale of the hit TV show How I Met Your Mother. The Shins treat ticket holders to concerts that brim with alternative and folk rock craftsmanship. In classic indie-rock style, The Shins’ stage sets are minimal, and the focus in is on the clever, introverted lyrics and dream-pop arrangements.
Formed in 1996 by singer-songwriter James Mercer, the band's deft lyrics and jangly pop sound are reminiscent of early R.E.M. The Shins' 2001 album Oh, Inverted World became one of the definitive indie albums of the early 2000s, and the single, “New Slang,” which played a prominent role in the film Garden State, helped the band achieve mainstream success. In a list compiled by Pitchfork of the best songs from 2000-2009, “New Slang” came in at No. 62. Their sophomore release, Chutes Too Narrow was named by Rolling Stone as one of the best albums of 2003. Following up was their third album in 2008, Wincing the Night Away, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. Throughout the band's four albums and nonstop tours, The Shins have explored new genres and different song structures. Multi-layered lyrics and high-production levels have been consistent features of the band and its concerts over the years, making The Shins a critically respected indie band throughout the entire music industry.

I am not familiar with the work of The Shins outside of Simple Song. My spouse adores that number. I went for her joy. Her joy was affirmed. My awareness of the music was that if a first time audience. The way the band performed was delightful. Joseph was a wondrous opening act. So filled with energy and hope for the future of the musical arts.
The Shins performance was fantastic. The Factory was adequate in their handling of general admission, vs VIP and such. Joseph sounded delightful but they just seemed to be so rehearsed and not spontaneous even with their interactions with the crowd. For some folks that may not matter much but it is very important to me that artists attempt to truly connect with the audience at hand.
Great performance. However, we didn't feel that the sound quality was the best. Too much base at times where you could not hear the singing.
I got there 2 hours early when door opened and i was able to secure a spot on the floor at the front, right in front of the stage! The opening act, JOSEPH, was incredible, followed by The Shins being mind-blowingly amazing, 2 encores!
The tickets I bought were for The Mann Music Center. At some point the venue changed and the concert was moved to the Electric Factory. I would have preferred the Mann, an outdoor, open setting. The electric factory was horrible, over-crowded and the sound system was poor. They should have offered the option of a refund for the tickets. Very disappointing for a show I was really looking forward to.
Great show. Loved it. The Shins rule. One big exception: The many chattering people next to the 1st floor bar. They never shut up. They rendered all the quieter songs pointless. They greatly reduce my desire to return to The Franklin Music Hall. One tip: Get as far as you can from the bar!
Felt like three distinct sets - the opener ladies were fun. Then they played the full "Oh Inverted World" (frequenlty with the opener as backup singers), featuring commentary from the band on how hard each song was to convert into a live performance. These two sets served as the "opener" for another hour or so of The Shins main hits. Above average overall and a very strong cost to fun ratio.
What an excellent venue for this nostalgic show. The audio was excellent on the 1st mezz level -- not too loud to enjoy without ear protection, but certainly not soft. For a band whose lyrics I haven't always been able to understand even on albums, I felt like I could really get a clear sense of the lyrics as well. The lighting, performance, and energy of the whole event, including their opener JOSEPH, was fabulous. Thank you for hosting my favorite band, Radio City!
The Shins are a one-of-a-kind band. Every performance is incredible and James is always amazing. I'll see the Shins perform any chance I get no matter what.
The Shins are known for their impeccable lyricism, intricate melodies and harmonies, and indie-rock charm. Their live performances capture this aspect of the band but they also let loose and bring out the ROCK! Their versatility in shifting from harder (for them) to softer and more intimate songs is beautiful to watch and brings out layers in their music which are unexpected, intense, and emotional. A+ show!
Had a great time watching the Shins in concert. The opening band, Joseph was really good as well. Played all the songs I loved and was very engaged.
Loved the show. Joseph were such a treat; they’re my favorite band. The Shins were better than expected - I wasn’t sure how their music would transfer to the stage. Aside from a few higher tempos from the studio, it was exactly the album. Some like that, some don’t. The band was medium energy.
So I’m dumb. When I bought tickets I thought it was to only see Joseph, then I realized they were only the opening band. Otherwise I got introduced to The Shins and IM IN LOVE!! The time I got with Joseph was amazing 🥲 THEYRE SO FREAKING GOOD!! Harmonies are so tight and they’re such beautiful sisters. It was my moms 3rd time seeing them :) Totally getting into The Shins now. THE CROWD SANG ALONG GO SEE AND GET BARRICADE!!
I love the Shins, this made me love The Shins more. They were absolutely terrific and Joseph added a really cool element when they were brought out during The Shins set. I'd recommend.
They played the entirety of "Oh Inverted World" and then plenty more songs. We had a blast! We were singing all the way home. Just wonderful musicianship. The group, Joseph, was a lovely accompaniment. Really great venue and thrilled the old Orpheum is going strong. Thank you James Mercer and band--professional all the way!
Really enjoyed the show, excellent performance by The Shins!
Everyone played so amazing. Was a wonderful show 10/10
This was the second of two shows at ACL on this tour, and the band was HOT! The Shins delivered a moving and memorable performance! Great venue to boot!!
