Always a good time with The Samples

by TW902 on 9/16/17B.B. King Blues Club & Grill - New York

The Samples always entertain their loyal fans! While the fans continue to get older, Sean Kelly's voice continues to sound the same after 30 years!

Great show with the original lineup! Hopefully another show with the lineup will happen again.

    Full energy!

by 8101Campbell on 6/5/16BB Kings - New York

It was great to see Sean Kelly on stage again. With no opening band, The Samples played a bunch of the classics...over 2 hours of music. Great crowd, awesome time!

Unbelievable show the other night at BB Kings, if you love the Samples as much as I do you are in for a treat, thanks to Sean for keeping it going. Looking forward to many more!

    Samples for one last night

by ercechl on 12/19/14Fillmore Auditorium (Denver) - Denver

Really great to see these guys back together. Jeep was in perfect form on drums. I must say this is probably the last time we ever see all these guys in the same place again. Sean Kelly was overly sensitive to just about everything on stage, too much reverb on this, waving his arms about that, and didn't even acknowledge the other members of the band. Sean just isn't that amazing of a musician to be so demonstrative about the littlest things. Just play your songs and smile... I love the Samples but I suspect based on Sean's behavior and treatment of the rest of the band that was it.

Very late start - made the crowd wait for a long time. Major sound issues. The band was quite critical of audience and their participation level in the show. Sounded unrehearsed. 30 minute set break. Left before the end of the show.

To Jam Or Not To Jam

by RebelWithoutApplause on 12/15/14Fillmore Auditorium (Denver) - Denver

If that is the question then the answer is Not To Jam. The Samples could have used a few more practice sessions or a few less bong hits prior to playing to a receptive audience at the Fillmore. When playing their material straight the sounded pretty good and had the crowd dancing. Unfortunately most of their songs broke into very loose jam sessions with Jeep MacNichol valiantly trying to keep everyone in time. Perhaps if the boys had been playing together for the last twenty-five years they would have the musical intuition needed to pull off extended jam interludes but as it was it was a mess. At one point Sean even not being able to find the 1 to start one of his forgettable solos. The band would eventually find their way through a sonic fog to force the music back into the barely remembered song. I felt bad for Sean as it was obviously an off night but I expect more for a $30 plus ticket. I saw the original line up play a few years back at the Mile High Music Fest and they sounded tight and lively. Unfortunately this night was an anniversary to forget.

    Left show early...

by FanfromWR on 12/15/14Fillmore Auditorium (Denver) - Denver

First let me say that I am a LONG-time fan of The Samples. The last time we saw The Samples was in Black Hawk at the Reserve several years ago and they were terrific - very tight band, great sound, really connected with the audience even though it was small. We arrived at the Fillmore after the warm-up band had finished. The first couple songs The Samples played were okay. But then they devolved...they tried to play like a jam band but it just sounded terrible. It didn't seem like they had practiced as they kept having to give instructions to the sound board throughout the show. The songs were interminable...we were joking that they were being paid by the minute... We stayed through the intermission, lasted through one more song and then left. I should have known to lower my expectations when after I paid full price for the tickets, I received a Groupon offer with ticket prices at a 53% discount. One of the worst concerts in a long, long time.
