The Roots picnic never disappoints! They always have an amazing line up and despite the rain on day 2, I still had a great time. The Roots make everyone they back up for sound great live! Highly recommend for hip hop fans.
Traveled to Philly for this and was really disappointed. It was totally a Stoner crowd and the opening acts were horrible. They only did 15 minds each and then things would lull for am hour. Also hated that there was no reentry and limited food options. We got there@ 3 (doors opened at noon) and gave up and left after a few hours. Missed De La, Wale & the roots cuz w just couldn't take it anymore. I am a long time roots fan so I was really disappointed. Now I know not to see them unless someone else is headlining.
The concert was set to start at 12:00 noon but did not begin until 1:30 P.M. Performers were on two different stages at separate times but not continuously--performers on the main stage and others in the tent. Since we were setup at the main stage my husband and I would have to take all of our belongings from one place to the next if we wanted to see who performed on the second stage (in the tent). We brought chairs with us because it was a standing room only concert so we could not move each time an act ended. In between acts, we waited up to 20 minutes for the next act to perform and at times no acts performed in the tent and no music was being played. I was allowed to bring in two waters and some chips I had in my purse and they sold very expensive food and drinks during the concert. Security would not allow anyone to bring in their own drinks if they were in a cooler or container. Everyone complained about the expensive food prices and got turned away at the gate if they had coolers. This concert was called The Roots Picnic so I don’t know why coolers were not allowed. The concert was all day long (ended around 11:00 P.M.) and you were not allowed to leave and return even if you had a medical condition. I know this because I asked to leave to get medication from my car and was told that I would not be allowed reentry. After waiting several minutes for the next act my husband and I decided to leave after staying until 5:00 P.M. and this was because we were waiting for the Roots who we found out would not perform until the end. If I went again, I would go in the evening just to see the Roots.
Terrible. Cudi did not show I will never feel the same for him now he is no different than many others out there. This was a very very long show.. Too many locals with same sounding songs that even an hour or 1/2 hour was too long for them to be up. Audio breakdowns and issues a lot thru the concert.
To be honest, I didn't get see the Roots perform because I had to leave early. I wasn't aware that it was an all day event. I wouldn't mind going to the next one. Maybe I will stay to witness the whole thing.
i have never been to festival pier and didn't know what to expect. i'm used to events like this in nyc being overly crowded and the venue never providing enough space or facilities. this was definitely not the case. the pier was well prepared, bathroom-wise, drinks and food-wise, and i never felt like there were just TOO many people to deal with. in terms of music, the lineup was AWESOME. i loved all of it, especially being able to see quadron and learning/hearing about selah sue for the first time. i would definitely go next year.
This was the first hip hop festival i've ever been to and it won't be the last. I will be attending this festival every year from now on. I had a GREAT TIME!!!
The show was FANTASTIC! I loved every part of it, well except for the rain and no Kid Cudi but that was out of the hands of all parties. The roots sure know how to put on a show! The only thing I would recommend is to start the Sunday show earlier. I live 2.5hrs from Philly and I had to drive home that night and go to work the next day... But it was ALL worth it!
great show, amazing mix of attendees and performers! everything was chill...we went on saturday and had a great time!! heard kids these days for the first time.... look out for them! those kids are phenomenal!!! keep doing the damn-thang roots crew! xo
Horrible Sound, Should be 1 day. Too spread out over the day. Food and Drink too expensive.
Great show! Hope to go again next year. The Roots, De La Soul, Wale, Mos Def were the best.
Excellent show, but I wish I had known I couldn't leave back out. Left my chairs in the car. I hated how long the lines were for food and how slow they moved. Also I wish I could have known the timing of the performers that I wanted to see before I got there...I would have come later.
The actual show was amazing! I cannot say enough about most of the acts that were in the lineup. Some surprise awesomeness were Kids These Days, Grand Prize Winners from Last Year, and OCD: Moosh & Twist. The Roots with De La Soul, Wale, Yasiin Bey, and a Jazzy Jeff cameo is a memory I will tell my grandchildren about one day.
Saturday was crazy! So much fun, beat performance was by far Wale, I sang my freaking heart out. Sunday I only went for Lupe and he bailed, so that was unfortunate and not to mention the rain. But diplo rocked the tent and really got the picnic jumping, literally. I recommend getting toasty before you go however because drinks are ridiculously prices and there is not re-entry.
Awesome Show cant wait to next year!!! The Roots are great
Phenominal!!!!!! Words cannot describe how incredible this event was!!
Great concert.. Get there around 5 because the headliners don't come on till 8 can't wait to go next year. Food and drinks very expensive
I go every year, never disappointed. A great line-up of up and coming as well as established artists. Also, the crowd is very diverse - great place to meet people you may normally not interact with. If you haven't been to a roots picnic, you're definitely missing out.
The dj sets were good, but the live performance needed a lot of work... Seems like they went on the cheap for stage equipment... The audio went out too many times for a concert... It would have been nice to have a schedule of when the bands would play... But the vibe was great!!!
