About

The Psychedelic Furs scored in the ‘80s when John Hughes featured “Pretty in Pink” in his classic 1986 teen comedy Pretty in Pink, naming his film after The Furs’ song. Led by lead vocalist Richard Butler and his brother Tim Butler on bass, the band’s 1981 sophomore album Talk Talk Talk (featuring “Pretty in Pink”) debuted on the Billboard 200. Their follow-up, Forever Now (1982) included the Billboard Hot 100 hit “Love My Way,” a staple of ‘80s Top 40 radio.  Their 1987 release Midnight to Midnight because their highest-charting album on the Billboard 200 and featured the hit single “Heartbreak Beat.” The Furs went on hiatus in the ‘90s and reformed in 2000 for a co-headlining tour with The Go-Go’s and B-52’s. In 2017, the band's 1984 song "The Ghost in You" was featured in Netflix’s Stranger Things

A must see before you die band !!!

by loddiedoddie on 9/20/09The Regency Ballroom - San Francisco

Best for long-time furs fans - not recommended for those who only know 'pretty in pink'.

Wonderful trip down musical memory lane

by Jamie2 on 9/18/09The Regency Ballroom - San Francisco

One smash hit after the other. A big smile never left my face throughout the concert. Richard Butler's signature gravelly vocals are still there. The last time I saw them was about 22 years ago at an amazing performance at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco so it was a bit of an eye opener to see the result of the aging process but their music is still as rich, memorable, and vibrant as it was on Day 1.

Psychedelic Furs was great, timing was very bad

by PaulK4 on 9/18/09The Regency Ballroom - San Francisco

The concert was awesome. The Furs were awesome. The venue was awesome, it was small and the accoustics were very good. I look forward to seeing more bands there in the future as I go to a lot of shows. My big complaint is that the main act, the Psychedelic Furs didn't start until it was going on 11PM. This is for a mainly middle-aged audience on a weeknight when everybody (except for members of the band perhaps) have to get up and go to work the next morning. The show was advertised as "starting at 8PM." Ok so the opening band went on well after 9PM and the Furs started well after 10:30. In San Francisco the last BART train - public transportation - which we were using leaves at midnight. This means we had to leave the show at 11:30 to catch the last train home - BEFORE THE SHOW WAS OVER!!!!!! So how were the Psychedelic Furs? Great, except that we only saw half of the show because they started so late and we have other commitments in life besides standing on our feet for hours and hours waiting for the band to show up

    Furs took me back

by DZSF on 9/18/09The Regency Ballroom - San Francisco

I was very excited to see the furs. I really enjoyed them in the early 80's and wanted to experience them live. I was impressed at how well they've aged. Richard's voice sounded as amazing as always. I appreciated how Richard reached out to the audience shaking hands and keeping a connection with us and making it a personal experience. Happy mondays was awesome too.

A great band rediscovering the joy of playing live

by MrWarmth on 9/18/09The Regency Ballroom - San Francisco

As '80s bands go the P.Furs were always a little dark. Drugs and an overall gloomy outlook contrasted with a great melodic sense and wonderful lyrics. The band that took the stage at the Regency Ballroom was really enjoying themselves. In their heyday, the Furs would never be all smiles and shaking hands with the crowd. Now with all their competive music industry nonsense behind them they were just enjoying playing for an appreciative crowd of fans. They didn't just play the "hits" but played material from all of their albums. The sound mix for the first few numbers was weak, losing the guitars and keyboards in a bass heavy mix left over from the Happy Mondays set evidently. Later on however, the mix managed to come together with the rest of the perfomance. Its rare in music when the sax player upstage the lead guitarist or the front man but that was the case with the Furs tonight. Great show. The Happy Mondays were a product of the Factory records generation of alt rock dance bands. I was aware of them in their prime but just couldn't remember any of their songs to save my life. Their lead singer was trying to cope the DJ in windbreaker and shades look he had in his 20's but given his age, extra girth and obviously dyed hair he just looked like someone's dad and wandered on stage while sleepwalking. Their set was competent but if you didn't care about the material 20 years ago you weren't going to be won over now. The less said about Amusement Parks on Fire the better. Noise pop is great for the Sonic Youth fans but it always seems like a way to avoid writing a proper song when you can just bury it in a din of 3 distorted guitars and bass.

    Happy Mondays - great show!!

by SinclairDaly on 9/18/09The Regency Ballroom - San Francisco

I've been a fan of Happy Mondays for about 15 years and was very happy to finally see them live. The drummer and bass player were incredible - just off the hook, man! The new female supporting vocalist is very good, too. She stayed very busy dancing and engaging the crowd. And what can I possible say about the wild man himself - SHAUN RYDER! The vocals were great, man. Let me just say that I'm not a Psychedelic Furs fan. I was there at that show for one reason and one reason only; to see my man Shaun Ryder and hear those turns - bottom line!!! Great sound that night there at the Grand Regency Ballroom. The light show was cool, too. The only bummer is that they didn't come out after the set and do a meet and greet. It would've been great to meet em all face to face.

    The Furs Ruled, Mondays Sucked

by strangus on 9/18/09The Regency Ballroom - San Francisco

I went to this show only to see the happy mondays, in fact I was gonna skip the furs. Well The Mondays sucked. Ryder was lifeless on stage, he kept holding his in ear monitor like an old man with a hearing aid. I think Ryder has some serious hearing issues, he was signing in and out of key all night. It made me sad. Anyhow I think most the people were there to see the Mondays, as the place started to empty out a little after their set. Their loss, The Furs came out and killed it. They were so amazing, Richard Butler is such a great performer. I was so glad I saw these guys. These guys are rock stars and they live up to it 100%.

    Psych Furs were joyous

by Spaceycakes on 9/18/09The Regency Ballroom - San Francisco

We got there a little late, disappointed that we missed APOF, although we got to talk to them for a bit at their table. Nice blokes, sorry we missed them. We weren't huge fans of Happy Mondays, and although the band was tight, the mix was AWFUL. Way too loud and boomy, so we retreated to another room. We weren't disappointed when the Furs made the stage and opened with "Love My Way." For the rest of the set, Richard Butler seemed genuinely to enjoy the loving crowd, and gave it right back, one song after the next. A very good vibe all around--the audience was grooving to it, and the band seemed to be enjoying themselves, they all played really good. Well worth it.

    awesome show

by surferory on 9/18/09The Regency Ballroom - San Francisco

I didn't expect happy Mondays was that good but they rock the house down, psychedelic furs was great, Richard butler was very playful, the sound of both bands was bad, I don't know if it's the mixing or they just have bad speaker system. but still I had an awesome time.

    The Psychedelic Furs

by Catnick on 9/17/09McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

A fantastic show from a band I've waited a long time to see. An hour and a half of Fur's greatest hits in a great venue. Butler is great fun, interacting with the crowd, signing autographs and high-fiving the front-rowers. The grin never left my face the entire concert. I won't hesitate to grab a ticket next time they're in town.

I love the Psych Furs but....

by Grays0n on 9/17/09McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

It was truly a joy to see them live in concert but the venue sucked. It was way to loud and required earplugs which interfered with my enjoyment of the music. Also, despite being a smaller venue, once you enter you cannot leave and re-enter which is hard if you are a smoker. Set list was a bit short and did not include some of their best songs like Highwire Days or Imitation of Christ. Still a great show from one of my favorite bands ever.

    The Furs Rocked

by 40somethingInOregon on 9/16/09McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

The Psychedelic Furs sounded awesome. They played the old songs everyone wants to hear and some new. Sounded just like I remember from the cassets - I mean CDs. The band seemed glad to be playing to the crowd who enjoyed the 1-1/2 hour set. I am so glad I went even though the 10:30 to midnight appearance on a Tuesday was a bit late for me now!

    Furs anbd Mondays in PDX

by Fac51 on 9/16/09McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

Mondays a mere shadow of formers selves and Shaun the only org. member there. Not even Bez who does not really play music was there. Saw them 3 time in the glory days and I thought this was sad to see. Shaun looked great and very young and thin. Fur were great. Better than I ever saw them. Venue very reminiscence of the SF Filmore.

    THEY STILL SOUND EXCELLENT!

by sly3 on 9/16/09McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

it's amazing that even after twenty five years the Psychedelic Furs still has the the same sound and energy that they had back when I saw them in 1985. The Black Mondays was an additional Bonus with new sound and very Gorilaz like style of music. Black Mondays should be in mainstream music scene soon.

Brings back so many good memories!

by HintOfKizzle on 9/16/09McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

So, in all honesty I went to this concert for the Happy Mondays and they did NOT disappoint - although technically, the only actual original Happy Monday member on stage was Shaun Ryder. They played some tried and true HM songs, like Loose Fit & Step On, as well as a few Black Grape and old old school HM diddies. I was shocked and quite pleasantly so that they played Hallelujah - I just melted! I enjoyed the Psychedelic Furs if only as an intellectual curiosity - I've always liked their music but never quite delved into it the way I did with the Happy Mondays. The Psych Furs don't seemed to have changed a bit aside from a few grays and they performed well. The lead singer still expresses his signature moves. I was a little disturbed by the Nazi-style raised arm motion, but I could tell that there was some political-subversion significance, but it was disturbing nonetheless. There was also this great opening band called Amusement Parks on Fire. They are clearly barely legal to drink, but they rocked the place like nobody's business! During the show, I wished I had heard their stuff before because it would have been so much more emotionally significant. They seemed like a cross between Silversun Pickups and the Verve. But they got me dancing and head banging and that's all that matters. They had tons and tons of lyrical and musical talent! And after their set, I purchased one of the CDs they had on sale and the lead singer very graciously signed it for me - even personalized it. He was absolutely endearing! Overall, I say the $25 - $30 bucks is worth the cost of this concert, especially if you liked the two main bands and are interested in listening to some new, raw talent!

by flyingpigskates on 9/16/09McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

This show was amazing. Probably as good or better than the shows back in the day. Richard was having a great time and it honestly showed. I would see this band once a week if I could.

Psychedelic Furs - House of Blues

by Backinthe80s on 7/19/09House of Blues Atlantic City - Atlantic City

It was great to see the Furs; it has been a few years(like 5). They played some of their more obscure songs and left out some of my favorites but still a great show. I saw them the next night in Montclair and the playlist was exactly(or close to it) the same. That was disappointing. House of Blues was a great venue.
