I have seen Pink Floyd, the Animals Tour, and the original Wall as well as Roger Water's recent re-invention of it. I have seen Australian Pink Floyd at the Hollywood Bowl (brilliant!) and a funky local, low-end Floyd in Santa Cruz (yawn) so I am well versed in Floyd renditions.
This group ranks a short second to Australian Pink Floyd, even better than Waters' Wall reboot, which was great. If you like or love Pink Floyd's music, you must see this band. My girlfriend and I were skeptical, as I didn't find the videos on YouTube inspiring, but the whole evening was a total blast, with some serious high points that were far more stimulating than Pink Floyd themselves, and the reason is this: these guys LOVE this music, so much so that they have ALTERED it significantly, but most often for the better, and they play it with gusto and precision and power and are really IN IT so that you will be IN IT, too.
And I have heard that Phil Collins once said, "I'd rather hear a B band with an A drummer." which is to say, the drummer is key to a group making it to "awesome" and this drummer was locked in, as Pink Floyd's music requires. In fact all the musicians were very first rate, and I am a rock musician myself so I do not say that lightly. The saxophone player, whom they fold into places that do not have sax in the original recordings, but always to the benefit of the song, never the detriment, was quite a special treat.
Lastly, while I appreciate Roger Waters' work as a vocalist, he is not a strong vocalist, and for the first time this group has a singer who sings the songs truly much better than Waters does, and makes them far more musical by doing so.
My congratulations to these dedicated gentlemen on a great performance, and I would be remiss to not mention the fantastic light and video show. There were moments I could do without the videos--the excessively long sheep video did not work for me or my girlfriend--and the requisite Money video was just so-so--but overall the show LOOKS great too, without trying to hard to exactly imitate a PF show. They, instead, made this a unique interpretation which at times exceeded the quality of the original music.
