About

Before returning to his righteous day job in Rage Against the Machine, Tom Morello picked up his acoustic and became THE NIGHTWATCHMAN, singing songs of bitterness, injustice and revenge - for the first time in his own voice.

"THE NIGHTWATCHMAN is a corner of me and speaks to a part of us, that has absolutely had enough," says Morello. "The opinions expressed in these songs are very much unfettered, a response to the injustices of the world we live in... They ask, both in a larger societal sense and a personal sense, how is all that going to pan out, and what role will you play in creating tomorrow?"

Morello's first album as THE NIGHTWATCHMAN, the aptly-titled One Man Revolution, was released in early 2007. Rolling Stone said he'd done a reverse Dylan, writing songs about "how shitty Bush's America is. Backed by acoustic guitar, harmonica and the occasional drums and keyboard, Morello paints himself as a ghostly figure wandering the country pointing out wrongs".

For Morello, THE NIGHTWATCHMAN is an extension of his work as an activist - the guitar god is also, as he puts it, "a guy who believes in rallying the troops and in standing up in an uncompromising way for social justice". He is co-founder, along with System of a Down's Serj Tankian, of Axis of Justice, an organization that aims to bring together musicians, music fans and grassroots political groups to fight the good fight.

"As fulfilling as the Axis of Justice work is to me, I needed an outlet for my music in the struggle for social justice," Morello says. "While political organizations can mobilize, music has the ability to inspire." His first - terrified - performances of these songs came at open mic nights in Los Angeles, in his downtime between Audioslave tours. The open mic night led to performances at union halls, picket lines and protests, and eventually to an infamous LA residency, where THE NIGHTWATCHMAN was often joined by guests such as Ben Harper, Perry Farrell, even Cypress Hill.

"Following in the footsteps of Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, Morello stands alone on stage accompanied only by his impassioned ideals and an acoustic guitar emblazoned with ‘Whatever it takes'. THE NIGHTWATCHMAN wants to do more than rock the house: he wants to return the power to the people and give them back the voice that he believes is being taken away from them."
