About

After five years away, The Neighbourhood return with (((((ultraSOUND))))) - a record that feels less like a comeback than a renewal. The California band that defined black-and-white pop melancholy in the 2010s has found color again, or at least shades of it.

Recorded first at Conway Studios in Los Angeles with longtime collaborator Justyn Pilbrow, then finished in a cramped Van Nuys rehearsal space called The Beehive with Jono Dorr producing, (((((ultraSOUND))))) captures Jesse Rutherford, Zach Abels, Jeremy Freedman, Mikey Margott, and Brandon Fried reconnecting after a three-year hiatus. "We didn't have to make this record," Abels says. "We came back because we wanted to. It was like being in the garage again -  fun and not so controlled."

Without a label deadline or anyone looking over their shoulders, the sessions unfolded naturally. "There was no one telling us we had to do it," Fried says. "We were self-governing for the first time - no label, no contract, just us deciding to make music again."

Across fifteen tracks, the band strips back the gloss and trusts feeling over flash. "Private" - the song that gives the album its name - folds self-examination into a hypnotic pulse. "Sometimes I didn't have the words," Rutherford says. "You'd need an ultrasound to see what I was feeling - to look inside and go, oh, that's what's happening."

Grey - the color they once rejected - runs through (((((ultraSOUND))))) like a quiet revelation. They even wrote "No Grey" back in 2013 as a declaration of absolutes. Now the shade shows up in the artwork and in several songs, a metaphor for nuance and growth. "Everything used to be black and white," Rutherford says. "Now it's grey."

(((((ultraSOUND))))) sounds like a band with nothing to prove and everything to say - five musicians rediscovering the balance between control and chaos that made them matter in the first place.

the neighbourhood is such an amazing band! jesse engaged the audience the entire night, making sure to pay attention to people in all sections of the venue. they are so good live and you can tell they love to perform

i’ve waited almost 7 years to see them, and this concert did not disappoint at all. i’ve never been so close to my favorite band. i’ll definitely cherish this memory

  • AMAZING

by Nadine on 11/4/19Revolution Live - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

Chip chrome, Jesse love of my mine was awesome. I love revolution lives venue, been there 4 times already. I just wish they could have the singer more louder, sometimes it’s hard to hear the music with so many people in there

  • Amazing but I’ve experienced better

    by J. on 11/4/19Revolution Live - Ft LauderdaleRating: 3 out of 5

First of all- you have the venue where it gets extremely packed to the point you can’t even see them. First two bands weren’t great and so we left to the other side. Luckily, the bartenders were great and lively. There were drunk underage girls playing on the wires by the sound booth and it took awhile for them to get kicked out of the area. Next time, we’ll just arrive for the main act. The Neighbourhood was above and beyond. The Fillmore was a better venue. Probably won’t go back to Revolution Live.

the show was so so good. from videos i had watched of past performances i was scared i wouldn’t enjoy it but they were really good. they have great energy on stage. i was probably as far away as you could possibly be and i could barely see but it was still a great show. definitely recommend seeing them

There were too many people at this concert. If they knew it was going to be this many peple they should’ve done at the fillmore. Worst experience ever.

  • I wanted... more.

    by Y. W. on 11/3/19House of Blues Orlando - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

Let me start by saying, I love The Neighbourhood. I truly do. I just wish they visited Florida more often!! This was the first time in 6 or so years that they've come back. I just felt dissatisfied because I felt like I was owed a longer or more fulfilling performance. They were great, don't get me wrong, but I wanted more... No encore?? What was up with that???

  • Love The Neighbourhood

The Neighbourhood performance was amazing! They gave the crowd exactly what they paid for, an AMAZING show!

  • Checked off my bucket list

by mimi on 11/3/19House of Blues Orlando - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

I've been a fan of this band since I was in middle school; 5 years ago. It's been a dream of mine since I found out about them to see them live. Being 18 and making my own money, I finally put it to use & decided the morning of Halloween night of 2019 that I was going to finally check it off my bucket list. The best last minute decision of my life so far. Words can't even justify the amount of happiness I felt. Being front row singing along to R.I.P 2 My Youth was EVERYTHING. Nonetheless, if you're looking at reviews to know whether or not you should go, this is your sign. Go. The performance they all put is incomparable to other artists.

  • So much fun

by Missy on 11/3/19House of Blues Orlando - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

This is my daughters favorite band, and her first time going to House of Blues. We upgraded to VIP seating and were not disappointed. The show was one of the best i have seen there. They were super energetic and really got the crowd involved. And what my daughter posted on Instagram says it all, "Nothing will ever top this night!❤"

  • So fun!

by Claire on 11/3/19House of Blues Orlando - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

The show was incredible. Jesse has so much energy on stage and the lights and everything was absolutely incredible. Honestly had such a genuine good time. The only thing I would say is that the sound quality at the house of blues kinda sucked.

  • Absolutely Amazing

by Lilaliez on 10/16/19The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas - Las VegasRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was phenomenal. We had back row tickets on 1st level and felt so close. The NBHD was amazing. I havent enjoyed a TRUE PERFORMANCE like that in years. So glad we made it in time, driving in from SoCal.

  • Absolutely Amazing!

by ELYR on 10/14/19The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas - Las VegasRating: 5 out of 5

Both opening bands, Claud and Jade Holiday, were great and I am now a huge fan of them. I wish there was an encore. But overall the concert was worth every penny I spent.

  • Amazing

by Gaven J on 10/14/19The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas - Las VegasRating: 5 out of 5

They sang a total of 19 songs which every concert I’ve ever gone to that hasn’t happened. The band performed really well. Just an amazing concert I would definitely see them again

  • Perfection

by S. R. on 12/26/18The Canyon Agoura Hills - Agoura HillsRating: 4 out of 5

Really fun show but I like their tracks more. Nice for a date night though!!! Still big fan and absolutely love their music to the brim.

  • Nice Event!

by Pinky on 12/26/18The Canyon Agoura Hills - Agoura HillsRating: 5 out of 5

Overall, it was a great time! Taking into consideration that this was a benefit concert shared by 4 bands, the main being the Neighbourhood, it was a really fun concert. The venue was really cool too! I’d like to go again someday 😊

  • Good venue, terrible show

by Rgeorge13 on 10/9/18House of Blues Boston presented by Cricket Wireless - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

The venue, as always is great for smaller shows. The opener, IDK, was wonderful and did a great job of connecting and hyping up the crowd. The Neighborhood, though, was a disappointment. The live rendition of every single song was so poorly executed it was difficult to tell what songs they were even singing. I go to many concerts every year and have for 15+ years. I am sad to say this is the first time I've left a show early. The lead singer made reference at one point that he was sick, so perhaps that is why it was such an awful show. Unfortunately, i wouldn't be willing to pay money to see them again in the future.

  • Outstanding!

by BeautifulMeadow on 10/5/18House of Blues Boston presented by Cricket Wireless - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

This was by far one of the best and most entertaining concert I’ve ever been to! I died and went to heaven. Wish I could relive it all over again.
