About

After five years away, The Neighbourhood return with (((((ultraSOUND))))) - a record that feels less like a comeback than a renewal. The California band that defined black-and-white pop melancholy in the 2010s has found color again, or at least shades of it.

Recorded first at Conway Studios in Los Angeles with longtime collaborator Justyn Pilbrow, then finished in a cramped Van Nuys rehearsal space called The Beehive with Jono Dorr producing, (((((ultraSOUND))))) captures Jesse Rutherford, Zach Abels, Jeremy Freedman, Mikey Margott, and Brandon Fried reconnecting after a three-year hiatus. "We didn't have to make this record," Abels says. "We came back because we wanted to. It was like being in the garage again -  fun and not so controlled."

Without a label deadline or anyone looking over their shoulders, the sessions unfolded naturally. "There was no one telling us we had to do it," Fried says. "We were self-governing for the first time - no label, no contract, just us deciding to make music again."

Across fifteen tracks, the band strips back the gloss and trusts feeling over flash. "Private" - the song that gives the album its name - folds self-examination into a hypnotic pulse. "Sometimes I didn't have the words," Rutherford says. "You'd need an ultrasound to see what I was feeling - to look inside and go, oh, that's what's happening."

Grey - the color they once rejected - runs through (((((ultraSOUND))))) like a quiet revelation. They even wrote "No Grey" back in 2013 as a declaration of absolutes. Now the shade shows up in the artwork and in several songs, a metaphor for nuance and growth. "Everything used to be black and white," Rutherford says. "Now it's grey."

(((((ultraSOUND))))) sounds like a band with nothing to prove and everything to say - five musicians rediscovering the balance between control and chaos that made them matter in the first place.

  • Incredible performance!

by Keiry on 10/28/21Rating: 5 out of 5

JESSE WAS INSANELY GOOD, they absolutely killed it! The vocals, instrumental, and productive value were fantastic! Anything negative I have to say is strictly on the bowl being so uncomfortable and crowded. Also the crowd was not as hype as I would have wanted lol

  • Ehhh...

    by A.G. on 10/19/21Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 3 out of 5

The Hollywood Bowl venue is horrendous. Absolutely no parking could be found, so we decided to pay $60 for valet just so we could attend the show on time. The hill to get to our seats was annoying...finding our seats was difficult since the numbers are engraved on the seat itself (if someone is already seated, you cannot see the seat number)... literally shoulder to shoulder next to someone in the middle of a pandemic... stage was extremely far from the seats despite the seats not being nosebleed seats... Usually The Neighbourhood sounds amazing; I don't know if it was the venue or the band that was rusty. Did not enjoy this show as much as previous shows due to experiencing the concert at a horrible venue.

  • First time visit - certainly not our last

    by Bella’s mom on 10/18/21Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

We walked just two blocks to the Hollywood Bowl only to be greeted by polite concession workers and security. Upon getting through security, we had multiple people to assist us to our seats, and within a minute of sitting down, our server stopped by to tell us our “supper in our seats” would be served shortly, and it was. Attentive and helpful until the concert began, which was FABULOUS. The sound, the view, everything was just perfect. Leaving was a little more crowded, but it was calm, and I felt super safe. I drove 6 hours to this venue I never visited before, to take my daughter to see her favorite band for her 18th birthday, and from my experience, I’d do it again! I highly recommend the Hollywood Bowl!

  • best band

by Jocelyn on 10/13/21Rating: 5 out of 5

Wow. I was in awe the entire time while at The Neighbourhood concert. They sounded exactly like the recorded versions. For the people saying the energy is low, what did you expect for it to be like for Daddy Issues, WDYWFM, Afraid?? Lol. Maybe listen to a different band then because I thought the energy was amazing! They were so beautiful in every way. However, I do wish they interacted with the audience more. Besides that, it was so incredible.

  • Best concert!

by Marleene on 10/13/21Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

I had so much fun, everything thing was great. They sounded the same if not better in person. The venue did get very crowded towards the end and parking was very chaotic but overall great experience!

  • Great but awful security

    by J. F. on 10/13/21Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

I purchased a front row ticket on the end of a section. The security guard stood directly in front of me for about half of the show. They were there to prevent people from coming forward to the stage. Instead of standing in front of the aisle, where people actually were coming and standing, he stood directly in front of my $800 seat. Not only did he block my view, but he was uncomfortably close to me.

The Nbhd definitely knows how to put a show. Would 1000% see them again in the future. Anyone thinking of seeing them live should absolutely do it.

  • IT WAS EVERYTHING

    by K on 10/12/21Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

IT WAS EVERYTHING. Jesse was swinging upside down and everywhere. There was instrumentals. There were oldies and newbies. There was fire. There was sparks. There was fog. It was awesome. Sad they didn’t play Fallen Star but I cannot freaking wait for them to go on tour.

  • 10/10 Experience
