Amazing show. I was back in 1974 for that evening. 5 Stars
The Musical Box does it again, rocked 'Foxtrot'. The last time they were in the DC area I saw them play 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' but this was a smaller venue with much better sound. It was great getting drinks served to the table.
The ultimate gift for the Genesis fan short of a time machine.
Musical Box sounds exactly like you're attending a Genesis concert. The singer has Peter Gabriel down pat in appearance, mannerisms and singing. The rest of the band have their parts down cold. Perfect.
The Musical Box transported the audience back to 1973. Never had a chance to see the 'real' Genesis perform live. This made me feel as if I had. The recreated original set list was awesome; Watcher of the Skies, Return of the Giant Hogweed, The Musical Box, The Knife, etc. The highlight, without doubt, was their performance of the epic 'Supper's Ready'. My favorite Genesis song, and one of my all time favorites tunes period. The musicianship was incredible! No easy feat capturing the quality of one of the most talented bands ever. Even if you are not a fan of (or even familiar with) this art rock leviathan, I highly recommend experiencing The Musical Box.
The Genesis Experience at its best. For the guys that were there in the 70's to reminisce and those who missed it to see it as it was
I have seen them 22 times. Foxtrot is an outstanding show as well are the 3 other shows they do. Incredible performance of the best music ever made although this time they only played 90 minutes which is a bit short.
Any Genesis fan MUST see this band! They lovingly and faithfully recreate Gabriel era Genesis shows from 1973-75. This show was the Foxtrot tour. They were fantastic as always.
This was my fifth time seeing Musical Box. Each time they continue to dazzle and amaze my senses. I've been blessed with the opportunity to see the real band with Gabriel back in 71 when they frist came to the US to promote SEBTP album. When I first saw the Musical box they were re creating that same tour and I literally had chills hearing and seeing the entire performance. On the current tour they play all of the key songs from foxtrot and Nursery crime and they do so with all the manneriems of the original band. I suggest that everyone that has never seen the original band with Gabriel go see The Musical Box if they come to your town. You will not be disappointed. A real feast for the eyes and ears for sure.
I've heard about The Musical Box for years, and seen clips on YouTube, but this is the first time I've had the opportunity to see them perform. To put it bluntly, if you like Peter Gabriel era Genesis, you absolutely must see them. Denis Gagne has absolutely nailed every single nuance of Peter Gabriel's performances, and the band gets the music right down to the last little detail; even that little timbale triplet played by Phil Collins at 2:14 in "Fly on a Windshield." For the encores, they played The Musical Box (song) and Watcher of the Skies. A tremendous highlight! I hope they come back next year and do different shows, I cannot wait to see them again.
I cannot recommend this show due to the extremely muddy sound mix that worked to kill any vestige of nuance and subtlety in The Musical Box's take on "The Lamb". While the overall sound level was not excessive, either poor engineering or a deficient sound system made for a disappointing experience. Further, since the lead singer sounds nothing like Peter Gabriel, a more distinct rendering of the lyrics might have at least helped improve audience acceptance. The show was not without merit. The Steve Hackett parts were very well played, the Rutherford contributions were competent, and the drumming was acceptable. However, the keyboardist seemed to be the chief contributor to the muddy mix, and was the main destroyer of subtlety. Some of the problem diminished during the non-Lamb redition of "The Musical Box", where the band appeared more assured. But that moment didn't last, as the closer "Watcher of the Skies" was summarily butchered in a cacaphonous drone that utterly failed to send the show home on a high note.
The Musical Box is a must see for any Genesis (or Prog Rock fan for that matter). Denis Gagne' does a masterful job of portraying Peter Gabriel as did the rest of the bands members, each capturing in great detail their prospective parts. Every player in this band is an exceptional musician and worthy of carrying on the Genesis' legacy. The great collection of vintage musical equipment (of the era) coupled with the great props, costumes and lighting make for a truly magical concert experience!
They nailed the Lamb better than I could have dreamed!
I had seen Genesis do the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway back in 1974...Back in New York City! Uh-huh....I was and still am an avid Genesis fan...and wished they would reunite for this concept album. When I heard that a cover band was going to do the show, I was a little skeptical, but wanted to see the Lamb again. The Musical Box did a fine job of resurrecting the Lamb from the 38 year hiatus I had spent longing for a reprieve of the story. After all these years, I have the whole album memorized both musically and lyrically. I thoroughly enjoyed both listening and watching this saga played out once again before my very eyes. I almost thought Rael was Peter Gabriel at one point. The man who plays him does an amazing job of replicating the character in the tale. The musicians played it perfectly. And the drummer almost looked like Phil Collins too back when he had hair. LOL
I saw the original production back in February of 1975 at Grand Valley State College. Back then it was my first concert and pretty much set the standard. Over the years I've seen tons of bands and various tours, including Genesis and Peter Gabriel. This rendition of the original is truly a trip back through time, from the complete Lamb followed by the Musical Box and Watcher of the Skies. The vocals were off slightly on occasion, but most of the time he nailed Peter Gabriel. Great show.
What do we all want? The original Genesis line-up When is that going to happen? Probaly never while Phil Collens is around. I saw this show the when they came through about a year ago and it was great, This time I huddled in the cold to get a better seat... front row, 8 feet from the drum kit. The sound was spectacular, like being "in" the album. These guys are so talented and they have dedicated themselves to playing it properly! I imagine this is what it's like for a Mozart fan to see the NY Philharmonic live. It's that good!
Music was good. However bass was far too heavy.even with ear plugs, my head and entire body was pounding! Event was attended by many smelly, already drunks. Security was horribly lax. One guy was inebriated so badly before show even began that it was an embarrassment . He was finally thrown out half way through the show. People sitting in back at bar ( area was lit) would not shut the hell up! The songs are ballads and the words need to be heard. People kept talking loudly, and I could not hear singers voice. Perhaps because the area was lit they felt it was okay to talk . In my honest opinion three-quarters of the people were Neanderthals who get let out of their cages infrequently. Whole place reeked of smoke and alcohol.sign on door said"no re entry" but security allowed patrons to smoke and return. Stinky!!!!! Security hung around bar in front, did not observe people at show.
Hit it note for note. An unbelievable show. What a great ride.
I saw Genesis perform "Lamb" at the Municipal Auditorium in Atlanta in '74/'75. It was one of the most memorable concerts of my youth. The Musical Box recreated the show flawlessly. I listen to "Lamb" all the time and know very word and note. MB did a fantasic job in all respects and I would see it again many times over. Honestly, I was very pleasantly surprised at the authenticity. Great show!
Saw The musical box doing Lamb lies down on broadway. Good show, but the band seemed to be doing it from memory. there were no emotional highs during the show. they seemed to be just going thru the motions. this music has good emotional highs in it and I did not see any evidence of that.
