    Preview Show

by Bkrhino on 6/12/12Black Ensemble Theater Cultural Center - Chicago

We had front row seats to this event. The play it self was pretty good, but the venue's operations could use some fine tuning. It was too hot and then too cold. The JBL speakers on stage either did not work or were not on. The music was not the Marvin Gaye that I am used too, but it was a good night out.

    Marvin Gaye stody was fabulous

by BoyntonRed on 6/12/12Black Ensemble Theater Cultural Center - Chicago

We saw Jackie Taylor's play "The Marvin Gaye story" last Thursday and just loved it! The cast was all so deliciously perfect for their roles. Yahdina Udeen was the perfect mother. Donald Barnes as the father was so hateful that I wanted to punch him out. And Rashawn Thompson morphed into Marvin Gaye. We were no longer watching a play in a theater but observing Marvin Gaye's life and listening to him sing. And, boy could he sing!!! The sexy aura and great voice of the real Marvin Gaye came through Rashawn. The play was a great delight!

    Jackie's Done it Again!

by QueenLeisa on 6/12/12Black Ensemble Theater Cultural Center - Chicago

I liked this show a LOT. However, I can't say I loved it. I would've liked to heard more of Marvin's hits and less of the B sides. Perhaps we could've explored his relationship with Tammi more and the one with his wife more also. I'm sure there's some good material there. Overall, I do recommend the play. I enjoyed it much.

    Educationally Entertained

by Mrtadau on 6/12/12Black Ensemble Theater Cultural Center - Chicago

I was amazed at how Mr. Gaye lived and died. More so, I was suprised at the simularity between he and Michael Jackson's relationship with their father. I always wondered if his music was an outcry of the emotional turmoil with his addiction. I loved the play as I still love his music. Marvin is truely missed.

    Marvin

by wonder25 on 5/16/12The Black Ensemble Theater Cultural Center - Chicago

The life story of Marvin Gaye "Don't Talk About My Father God Is My Friend" preview opened on May 11, 2012. This play took an inside look at the life of the late Marvin Gaye. The actors and actresses put on a good performance. The performance attire needed better texture and style. The portrayal of Marvin's mother was outstanding. The actor that played the lead of Marvin Gaye was good but in the beginning the male actor lacked the vocal power of this great entertainer and recording artist. He finally begin to show more vocal power by the time he song "Let's Get It On". Sexual Healing was the highlight of his performance. The music of The Black Ensemble Theatre Band was outstanding. The play needed a more powerful ending. The actual shooting of Marvin by his father was not shown. I do regret the fact that the waiting period before seating was over twenty minutes and their was no good ventilation inside the theater. Last but not least their were no itinerary programs to be purchased for this event. AKA DJ Wonder Woman .
