About

Formed by guitarist/composer Omar Rodríguez-López and singer/lyricist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, The Mars Volta rose from the ashes of El Paso punk-rock firebrands At The Drive-In in 2001. Ona mission to "honor our roots and honor our dead", The Mars Volta made music that fused the Latin sounds Rodríguez-López was raised on with the punk and underground noise he and Bixler-Zavala had immersed themselves in for years, and the futuristic visions they were tapping into. The albums that followed were one-of-a-kind masterpieces, their songs of breath-taking complexity also possessing powerful emotional immediacy. After the group fell silent, a legion of devotees (including Kanye West) kept up an insistent drum-beat for their return.  Now-a year after 'La Realidad De Los Sueños', aluxurious 18-LP box-set compiling their back catalog, sold out its 5,000 print run in under 24 hours-The Mars Volta are back.

Throughout their career, The Mars Volta have brought played many famous venues to capacity, like Tabernacle in Atlanta and Terminal 5 in New York.

  • So awesome

by youenjoymyself on 5/21/23Orpheum Theater - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5

Opening band was amazing. Teri Gender Bender is a total vibe. I Loved the stage set up with the mirrors and OMG the lights. The entire band looked like they were having a great time. They didn’t jam as much as I would have liked but on the flip side there was a bigger set list. I saw this band 18 years ago at the same venue while still in high school. I loved every minute of it and can’t wait to see them again.

  • Phenomenal

Fantastic band to see live! I saw them in New Orleans after being a fan for years. Please see them, they’ve kept the heat all these years. Great, energetic show

  • Absolutely Incredible

by Mike on 5/17/23Abraham Chavez Theatre - El PasoRating: 5 out of 5

Great show, great venue. I have been wanting to see TMV for a while. Should have seen them when I had the chance between 2003 - 2012ish, but more than happy and thankful to them that I got to do it this year. Also, along with Teri - come on man, it doesn't get any better. Her and her band are awesome! She is such a weirdly, incredible performer. The TMV were on point - true artists - everyone on the stage! Saw them in Atlanta as well. Thinking about heading to Colorado... who's ready?

Great Band and Energy! Abraham Chavez Theater is great because every seat is an excellent choice. However, management needs to leave some of the doors open to allow the air conditioning to flow.

  • Great Night of MUSIC at the Masquerade

by Jon on 5/9/23The Masquerade - Heaven - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

First time at the Masquerade. Great venue and the sound was terrific. I am normally not impressed with live sound these days, as it seems most live mixing engineers favor a bass-heavy approach combined with a “louder is better” mentality, resulting in noise that is sometimes unrecognizable as the music I came to hear. The sound at this show was clear and balanced very well, so kudos to the mix engineer for both TMV and Teri Gender Bender. Speaking of, this was the first time in recent memory that I wasn’t waiting for the opener to be finished. Teri Gender Bender has a tight band with great arrangements, and the stage presence was top notch. What a voice! See this tour if you get the chance. The Mars Volta personnel were all incredible musicians, and there were moments of improvisation that made me think of Coltrane’s and Davis’ electric days. I especially enjoyed when the keyboardist took a solo and Omar (guitar) stepped off the stage to watch and listen - I could see that he (and the rest of the band) were really listening to the solo and being amazed along with the audience, adding a genuine sense that many in attendance, including the band, really value musical talent. Great night!

  • Pure perfection

by Arq on 5/8/23The Masquerade - Heaven - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

These guys are true masters of their craft, Omar and Cedric are still on top of their game, they have matured and with age comes focus, I would attend to more of their shows if they are near my area.

  • Amazing show. Do not miss

Their live show and tightness blew my mind and they played for two hours straight. If I have another opportunity to see them I will not miss it.

  • Still....

by DeeMarieDubb on 1/4/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Being a few months out from witnessing one of their shows in Seattle, WA. I cannot believe that I was able to see this band live. I unfortunately was not introduced to their music until 2013. Since then I've been unapologetically addicted. To have been able to see them was equal to a very close deceased friend/relative being resurrected from the dead. Something I thought impossible. The year (2022), was literally the worst year of my life. I experienced trauma and grief like I never have before. Including the deaths of 4 of the main reasons for my living. Seeing this band live made it possible for me to look back and make that year overall bearable. I know I am duplicating a lot of what others are saying but now that the impossible is currently possible, and if you are a fan and haven't had the opportunity, if and when you get the chance, do it. Make that "chance". This was not a band on stage doing their job. They were smiling and enjoying themselves. Yes it was a performance, but almost at times, it seemed to be that the audience didn't even exist and they were present to just respect each and everyone of their fellow members talents. I am so forever grateful. And lucky doesn't even begin to describe it...

  • Great performance, questionable acoustics

by Brian on 12/6/22Moore Theatre - SeattleRating: 4 out of 5

The Mars Volta performed an amazing show. So many of their best songs, from nearly every album, and it's clear that the energy was there. However, something about The Moore Theatre muddied the sound, and it was difficult to clearly hear the vocals or some of the other instruments. Perhaps a vintage hall - designed for acoustic instruments - is not the best choice for a modern amplified band. I came away wishing I'd heard them in another venue.

  • Wild

    by C.L. on 10/31/22Hollywood Palladium - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Great performance, really had me tripping, the solos were crazy, just great overall, one of those bands that you have to see at least once in your life.

  • 3 of the best shows of my entire life

by Rotten Apollo on 10/28/22Hollywood Palladium - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

In a word, everything about the show was intimate. It was all beautiful music, emotions, sweat and tears, singing and dancing - the crowd and the band were alive and gave each other everything. I'm grateful to them and to the wonderful people I met there. Not everything in life can always be so pure and positive and uplifting, but sometimes it can be and that's what it was. They gave me a place I could close my eyes and dig deep; it's like they asked, or better yet dared, how deep are you trying to go? And they helped us find that place. If you love The Mars Volta, you owe it to yourself to go to one of their shows and, respectfully, put every last bit of yourself out there.

  • Masterclass of musicianship

by Jason on 10/28/22Hollywood Palladium - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

One of the best live music performances I have ever experienced. It was amazing. The Mars Volta put on a masterclass of musicianship. Wow. I am still in awe. Love them.

by Ramon on 10/26/22Hollywood Palladium - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Volta was amazing they sounded great. The venue itself is amazing but I notice that all the live nation/ ticketmaster venues are no longer selling beer on tap. I dont want to pay 14 dollars for a tall can i can get at the liquor store for 2.

  • Could not have asked for a better show!

by SusieQRox on 10/26/22Hollywood Palladium - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

So glad to finally see my favorite band again (been like 15 years). Despite not being used to the new album yet, they played a lot of their older songs. Out of all the times I’ve seen them play, I don’t recall them playing “Televators”until this show (was about to cry). Had the best seat in the house, could get down without feeling crowded. Thank you to the og members, new members, Teri Gender Bender and everyone else who made this possible. Even the Palladium staff was cool. Tickets on this night were super affordable. So worth the trip!

  • TMV was amazing!
