About

Formed by guitarist/composer Omar Rodríguez-López and singer/lyricist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, The Mars Volta rose from the ashes of El Paso punk-rock firebrands At The Drive-In in 2001. Ona mission to "honor our roots and honor our dead", The Mars Volta made music that fused the Latin sounds Rodríguez-López was raised on with the punk and underground noise he and Bixler-Zavala had immersed themselves in for years, and the futuristic visions they were tapping into. The albums that followed were one-of-a-kind masterpieces, their songs of breath-taking complexity also possessing powerful emotional immediacy. After the group fell silent, a legion of devotees (including Kanye West) kept up an insistent drum-beat for their return.  Now-a year after 'La Realidad De Los Sueños', aluxurious 18-LP box-set compiling their back catalog, sold out its 5,000 print run in under 24 hours-The Mars Volta are back.

Throughout their career, The Mars Volta have brought played many famous venues to capacity, like Tabernacle in Atlanta and Terminal 5 in New York.

  • Mars Volta at the Ventura Majestic Theater

by cagey on 7/21/09Ventura Theatre - VenturaRating: 5 out of 5

This was an awesome preview of material from the Octahedron album which had not yet been released at the time of the show. They played Cotopaxi, and Teflon from the new album. My favorite part is in the attached video where at the fifty four second mark they went into what to me sounded like the guitar rifff from Tom Sawyer. To see them in a venue of this size was an event not to be missed by Volta fans.

Great venue! Performance was awesome! Mic on vocals was a bit low but overall it was an amazing night!!!! Definitely worth the wait

  • The new tracks are nice......

by Antone on 7/16/09Ventura Theatre - VenturaRating: 4 out of 5

I arrived early after driving an 1hr and 40min run from L.A. to Ventura. the scene on the streets on oldtown Ventura were of many a shape of people, the volta fans are very unique in many ways. we come to expect the best performances thus far. anticipating the new tracks, wondering which old favs will be played. With a cold drink in hand, finished off the drink and headed in 10 mins after door opening time. ........we waited, and waited, and waited, and waited......I'm was hugging hand rails weary of drink, stage darkens , they began!!!!and played some older EP jams, some De-loused madness and stuck in the more power tunes of the new Octa album and Since we've be wrong. Over all a 9 , for us who had to wait more than an hour past scheduled showtime with no extended set was a let down. all dispersed after 2 hours of music with one comment in my head. Cedric had said something to the effect -" I hope your ready for a lot of music tonight, if you don't like it you can go home and play your records".......It was good to see they still play with such ferocity on stage, the group was smaller TMV group but sounded equally great.I will not have to buy another ticket for awhile or until the next years volta album.

  • They played roulette dares

by medium on 7/16/09Ventura Theatre - VenturaRating: 5 out of 5

the only thing i didn't like that we where waiting 2 hours for them to come out, which i think was a bunch of bs but at the end when everything was over i forgot about that and remembered how they kicked ass. The drummer, Thomas Pridgen, was amazing as always

  • The Mars vs. Ventura

by inli on 7/15/09Ventura Theatre - VenturaRating: 5 out of 5

The Mars Volta put on an amazing show, but the Ventura ampitheatre was disgustingly oversold. There were waay too many people for that tiny place.

Awesome Awesome Awesome. Never miss a chance to see them anywhere... Except the Sasquatch Music Festival - Never Go There

  • Best rock concert I've ever seen

by sudsy on 7/15/09Ventura Theatre - VenturaRating: 5 out of 5

There wasn't any laser light show. Just incredibly tight rock music. It took a while for the band to come out while their crew tuned and re-tuned guitars and sound checked everything sixty times. The crowd got restless but when TMV came out everyone lost their mind. The sound quality was really amazing. I was right in the front and it really sounded superb. I'd never seen Pridgen drum live he was really powerful. The show was really relaxed and organic, Cedric took a break to crack jokes about Omar, Pridgen and Marcel smoked a blunt midset. Nonetheless, they consistently played with an amazing amount of groove and intensity. If you ever get the chance to be front row at TMV don't miss it.

  • amazing as always

the Mars Volta again, did not disappoint. Mind blowing performance and a lot of new stuff from their new album which is also pretty amazing. The one thing that really sucked though (which is why I gave it only 4 stars) is that they went on over an hour late (almost 90min) ....and that kinda sucked for everyone especially since they were the only band playing. other than that ....KICKED ASS!

  • The Mars Volta killed as usual!

by MegBlue on 7/15/09Ventura Theatre - VenturaRating: 5 out of 5

They were, of course, amazing. Completely blew my mind for two hours. I can't wait to see them again.

  • The Volta always rocks!!

    by Inks74 on 7/15/09Ventura Theatre - VenturaRating: 4 out of 5

I've seen The Mars Volta five times now and they only get better with every show. It was great to see them in Ventura, in a smaller lesser know venue. It made the show feel a little more personal. I can't wait to see they again when they come back to So.Cal.

  • The Mars Volta Show was a wonderful experience!!!

by KAJD on 7/15/09Ventura Theatre - VenturaRating: 5 out of 5

It was my first Mars Volta show & I can't wait to see them again. The show was unbelievable! Incredible performance!! The way the band feeds off one another & plays together in synch is amazing. I was seven months pregnant when I went to the show, it was the first time my baby was moving consistantly. It didn't hurt, if felt as if my baby was dancing. After the baby is born I will be playing Mars Volta music for him & I am positive the sound will be soothing to his ears. He already listens to them while in the womb, which is insisted by my boyfriend who is by far their number one fan. Because of him, my son is going to come out singing the words & understand what each song is about!!

Its the mars Volta, what more do I have to say. Great fun. Great energy from both the band and the crowd. I enjoy seeing this band in small clubs and theaters. I cannot recall the setlist, but I know they played a number of selections off of the new album . All very good. The reason I give this show a 4 star rating is because of the venue. The sound is sub-standard and the security can be horrible. The drinks were expensive, but the bartenders poured ample alcohol.

  • Mars Volta in Ventura

by RosalynnCarter on 7/14/09Ventura Theatre - VenturaRating: 5 out of 5

This show was amazing, I've seen the Volta before but never in this intimate setting. Truly epic performance, Cedric was definitely at the top of his game. The new material sounds amazing live, especially Teflon and Desperate Graves. Adrian and Paul will be missed but the show was just as intense and epic without them. Hopefully I can go see them at Outside Lands. Definitely worth the trip.

  • Return to Mars

by Bassfayce on 7/14/09Ventura Theatre - VenturaRating: 5 out of 5

I heard about this show right before tickets went on sale. Despite my best efforts, I could not sway any of my friends to buy a ticket (as an aside, the $20 ticket ended up being $35+ thanks to excessive online fees), so I was flying solo. I drove down to beautiful Ventura and got in line for the show. My musical tastes vary widely from the noisy and absurd to more accessible mainstream, and I must say of all the shows I've been to The Mars Volta delivers like no other. The lead singer, Cedric Bixler Zavala carries in his voice the howling essence of Robert Plant but his lyrics speak abstract tales of lust and loss through dark ("A mass of gallon sloth as flies have walls for feet") and often perplexing ("The kiosk in my temporal lobe is shaped like Rosalyn Carter") imagery. Meanwhile, the man with the left-handed guitar flicks away at six strings in a blur. Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, the co-founder and composer for the band has just as huge a stage presence as Cedric, and together they seem to electrify the air around them. This particular show in Ventura was spilling over with goodness. Not only did we get to hear four new songs a bit before they were 'officially' released, but some old favorites as well, including: Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus, Roulette Dares, and The Widow. In fact, they touched on just about every album except for Tremulant. A few songs I found to be particularly exciting... Ilyena was thumpin real good. I was surprised and delighted that Cedric nailed the song so well. Also I really think their new song Cotopaxi would make a great song to play during a car chase, and hearing it live it sounds much better than on the album. I got a bad (good) case of the shivers as soon as the breakdown started. Omar had some good thrash/jam moments during Goliath and Viscera Eyes and I wish he would've brought the band back for an encore song but I left satisfied. All in all an awesome, very exciting (and sweaty for those in the pit) show. If I had one comment to consider a complaint, it would be that I could not hear Ikey except for one short solo he got in the middle somewhere...we love you Ikey. Crank it up my man! See you in San Francisco fellas.

  • Great Event

    by 1haffnegr0 on 7/14/09Ventura Theatre - VenturaRating: 5 out of 5

This show was a preview of the new album, happening just a week before it was released. They played most, if not all, of the new album including some re-worked versions of their classics. The sound was great, though very loud (I actually lost my hearing about half-way through the show, but still had a smile). A fantastic evening with a wonderful band.

The show was too loud. I couldn't even decipher notes. It was just two hours of noise. I wish i would have stayed home.
