About

Formed by guitarist/composer Omar Rodríguez-López and singer/lyricist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, The Mars Volta rose from the ashes of El Paso punk-rock firebrands At The Drive-In in 2001. Ona mission to "honor our roots and honor our dead", The Mars Volta made music that fused the Latin sounds Rodríguez-López was raised on with the punk and underground noise he and Bixler-Zavala had immersed themselves in for years, and the futuristic visions they were tapping into. The albums that followed were one-of-a-kind masterpieces, their songs of breath-taking complexity also possessing powerful emotional immediacy. After the group fell silent, a legion of devotees (including Kanye West) kept up an insistent drum-beat for their return.  Now-a year after 'La Realidad De Los Sueños', aluxurious 18-LP box-set compiling their back catalog, sold out its 5,000 print run in under 24 hours-The Mars Volta are back.

Throughout their career, The Mars Volta have brought played many famous venues to capacity, like Tabernacle in Atlanta and Terminal 5 in New York.

Best rock concert I've ever seen

by sudsy on 7/15/09Ventura Theatre - Ventura

There wasn't any laser light show. Just incredibly tight rock music. It took a while for the band to come out while their crew tuned and re-tuned guitars and sound checked everything sixty times. The crowd got restless but when TMV came out everyone lost their mind. The sound quality was really amazing. I was right in the front and it really sounded superb. I'd never seen Pridgen drum live he was really powerful. The show was really relaxed and organic, Cedric took a break to crack jokes about Omar, Pridgen and Marcel smoked a blunt midset. Nonetheless, they consistently played with an amazing amount of groove and intensity. If you ever get the chance to be front row at TMV don't miss it.

    amazing as always

by erikkkerr on 7/15/09Ventura Theatre - Ventura

the Mars Volta again, did not disappoint. Mind blowing performance and a lot of new stuff from their new album which is also pretty amazing. The one thing that really sucked though (which is why I gave it only 4 stars) is that they went on over an hour late (almost 90min) ....and that kinda sucked for everyone especially since they were the only band playing. other than that ....KICKED ASS!

    The Volta always rocks!!

    by Inks74 on 7/15/09Ventura Theatre - Ventura

I've seen The Mars Volta five times now and they only get better with every show. It was great to see them in Ventura, in a smaller lesser know venue. It made the show feel a little more personal. I can't wait to see they again when they come back to So.Cal.

The Mars Volta Show was a wonderful experience!!!

by KAJD on 7/15/09Ventura Theatre - Ventura

It was my first Mars Volta show & I can't wait to see them again. The show was unbelievable! Incredible performance!! The way the band feeds off one another & plays together in synch is amazing. I was seven months pregnant when I went to the show, it was the first time my baby was moving consistantly. It didn't hurt, if felt as if my baby was dancing. After the baby is born I will be playing Mars Volta music for him & I am positive the sound will be soothing to his ears. He already listens to them while in the womb, which is insisted by my boyfriend who is by far their number one fan. Because of him, my son is going to come out singing the words & understand what each song is about!!

Its the mars Volta, what more do I have to say. Great fun. Great energy from both the band and the crowd. I enjoy seeing this band in small clubs and theaters. I cannot recall the setlist, but I know they played a number of selections off of the new album . All very good. The reason I give this show a 4 star rating is because of the venue. The sound is sub-standard and the security can be horrible. The drinks were expensive, but the bartenders poured ample alcohol.

    Mars Volta in Ventura

by RosalynnCarter on 7/14/09Ventura Theatre - Ventura

This show was amazing, I've seen the Volta before but never in this intimate setting. Truly epic performance, Cedric was definitely at the top of his game. The new material sounds amazing live, especially Teflon and Desperate Graves. Adrian and Paul will be missed but the show was just as intense and epic without them. Hopefully I can go see them at Outside Lands. Definitely worth the trip.

    Return to Mars

by Bassfayce on 7/14/09Ventura Theatre - Ventura

I heard about this show right before tickets went on sale. Despite my best efforts, I could not sway any of my friends to buy a ticket (as an aside, the $20 ticket ended up being $35+ thanks to excessive online fees), so I was flying solo. I drove down to beautiful Ventura and got in line for the show. My musical tastes vary widely from the noisy and absurd to more accessible mainstream, and I must say of all the shows I've been to The Mars Volta delivers like no other. The lead singer, Cedric Bixler Zavala carries in his voice the howling essence of Robert Plant but his lyrics speak abstract tales of lust and loss through dark ("A mass of gallon sloth as flies have walls for feet") and often perplexing ("The kiosk in my temporal lobe is shaped like Rosalyn Carter") imagery. Meanwhile, the man with the left-handed guitar flicks away at six strings in a blur. Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, the co-founder and composer for the band has just as huge a stage presence as Cedric, and together they seem to electrify the air around them. This particular show in Ventura was spilling over with goodness. Not only did we get to hear four new songs a bit before they were 'officially' released, but some old favorites as well, including: Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus, Roulette Dares, and The Widow. In fact, they touched on just about every album except for Tremulant. A few songs I found to be particularly exciting... Ilyena was thumpin real good. I was surprised and delighted that Cedric nailed the song so well. Also I really think their new song Cotopaxi would make a great song to play during a car chase, and hearing it live it sounds much better than on the album. I got a bad (good) case of the shivers as soon as the breakdown started. Omar had some good thrash/jam moments during Goliath and Viscera Eyes and I wish he would've brought the band back for an encore song but I left satisfied. All in all an awesome, very exciting (and sweaty for those in the pit) show. If I had one comment to consider a complaint, it would be that I could not hear Ikey except for one short solo he got in the middle somewhere...we love you Ikey. Crank it up my man! See you in San Francisco fellas.

    Great Event

    by 1haffnegr0 on 7/14/09Ventura Theatre - Ventura

This show was a preview of the new album, happening just a week before it was released. They played most, if not all, of the new album including some re-worked versions of their classics. The sound was great, though very loud (I actually lost my hearing about half-way through the show, but still had a smile). A fantastic evening with a wonderful band.

The show was too loud. I couldn't even decipher notes. It was just two hours of noise. I wish i would have stayed home.

    Old-Fashioned Volta.

by Teleka on 7/14/09Ventura Theatre - Ventura

Although the two now-gone members will be missed, especially Adrian's saxophone on songs where he was prominent, the lineup reminded me of good 'ol classic Mars Volta from their early years, with just five and later, six members. This isn't an album review, but it must be noted that their previous album, "The Bedlam In Goliath," contained more, shall we call it noise? than previous albums and their new album "Octahedron" went in a completely opposite direction. The setlist was heavy with new songs, as five of them were performed, but altogether it was a good mix of songs from the band's catalog. Omar, surprisingly, was on backing vocals most of the night and, unsurprisingly, Cedric was up to his regular antics what with detuning Omar's guitar whenever he got near and making fun of him as well, comparing Omar, along with his bandmate brother Marcel, to what he likened "Former Disney-Children turned Dictator." Midway through the set Cedric gave a speech before performing Ilyena, calling out all the people that ridicule others for going in different directions with their music and that people should not hate, nor make fun of, people for what they create when they have put their entire heart into it and have worked so hard to get where they are now. Without mentioning themselves, we know it is the Volta who is getting what can be called a backlash for the changes in their recent recordings, but change is what they're about and it's what makes them "Classic" Mars Volta. It's what keeps us coming to their performances such as this one.

Loved the location, the sound was good once we moved away from the stage. The Mars Volta = such an amazing band & this was the perfect place to watch them live for the first time.

    Mars Volta at Ventura Theatre

by Fugitivefiend on 7/14/09Ventura Theatre - Ventura

The Mars Volta always kick ass, every single show. So no worries on the performance level. They have a stream-lined band now, with six members. They were AWESOME. The Ventura Theatre, on the other hand, although it is quite small and an extremely cute old theater, nicely decorated, etc... but the acoustics SUCK. I've been there a couple times before, several years ago, and I stopped going because I didn't like the sound. I risked it again for TMV, but I am done. Never again going to that venue. Oh well!
