THE LEHMAN TRILOGY, winner of the 2022 Tony Award for Best Play, weaves together nearly two centuries of family history in an epic theatrical event charting the humble beginnings, outrageous successes, and devastating failure of the financial institution that would ultimately bring the global economy to its knees. Told in three parts over one evening, THE LEHMAN TRILOGY is the quintessential story of western capitalism, rendered through the lens of a single immigrant family. On a cold September morning in 1844, a young Jewish man from Bavaria stands on a New York dockside dreaming of a new life in the new world. He is soon joined by his two brothers, and an American epic begins. 163 years later, the firm they establish--Lehman Brothers--spectacularly collapses into bankruptcy, triggering the largest financial crisis in history.
TimeLine Theatre's production of THE LEHMAN TRILOGY is its Chicago premiere. The Broadway production of THE LEHMAN TRILOGY was met with extraordinary international acclaim. The Guardian proclaimed it "a kaleidoscopic social and political metaphor" and "an intimate epic about the shifting definition of the American Dream." The Chicago Tribune praised it as "a masterwork" and The New York Times as "a vivid tale of profit and pain." Vanity Fair raved that it is "true blockbuster theatre that will hold you captive until the final curtain call," with Time Out New York saying "it leaves you dazzled." And The Wall Street Journal declared that THE LEHMAN TRILOGY "surpasses all praise."
A fascinating story of a great complexity told through a well-acted ensemble of only three actors. A must see!
Superb acting, impressive set, unique story telling, some comic relief. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable theater experience. Highly recommended.
I felt like the informational content of this play was exceptional. I learned a lot of details that I was unaware of the Lehman Brothers. However, I thought the set and costume's could have been more creative as the characters evolved. The set was a bit messy and chaotic. The customs were also not well kept. I had front row seats and I saw everything from un pressed and broken hems in the jackets to trash on the floor.
I had no expectations for this play and I left thinking about for a couple days. It was great you need to see it
"Lehman Trilogy"is well conceived, well written and marvelously realized at the TimeLine Theater. The actors slip from character to character seamlessly. A mesmerizing 3 hours.
I admittedly have an interest in nerdy financial stories like this. However, this play was an amazing human journey across a few centuries. Wonderful writing, incredible acting, creative staging - I wish I could see it again tomorrow!
Too long, poor sound system, weak lighting (too dark), poor staging, bad set. There were so many elements that could have been changed to improve the production. So disappointing since I was really looking forward to this for a long time. The acting was good but the script needs editing.
If an entire play of narration is your cup of tea, basically a live book on tape - then boy is this the show for you. 3 white dudes, speaking directly to the audience - 3 hours of exposition, with moments of actual dialogue - with the 3 actors playing all the parts - that is, if you can keep straight who is who for the 5 sec of actual theater. Such a disappointing night - not even compelling storytelling, but definitely not theater.
It’s a story of family with an entrepreneur spirit. Deep faith and the many things that happened to them. Big events in life interrupt that could end everything. But at each crisis point they make it a win win. They help the town or country while helping themselves become very wealthy at the same time. Ironically when they sell it off completely to just cold investors with management with short term goals and no moral compass everything goes wrong. Even Adam Smith said capitalism without morals wouldn’t be a good thing. But the collapse is for another play - this is focused about the family. It’s very long 3 hours 2 intermissions…I liked it very much but if I did it again I would see a matinee.
With only THREE ACTORS in a THREE HOUR play, I was impressed by the performances of all three AND their versatility playing multiple characters. I learned a lot about the Lehman family. Also. a separate publication, THE BACKSTORY provided some valuable information.
If anyone had told me I could sit riveted for a three hour play with two intermissions, I would have said they were exaggerating wildly. But that is just what I did for the Lehman Trilogy. The three actors portraying a variety of characters were outstanding. The play itself was a testimony to what time, cultural evolution and just plain greed cam do to a storied institution.
Did not think I could last 3 + hours with only 3 actors!! Well, I was pleasantly surprised! This show is AMAZING! So engaging! Loved it and learned a lot as well!
This was a new production rather than the original production. It was about 3 and a half hours long with two intermissions but it didn't feel that long. It was well acted and directed.
Lehman Trilogy was very disappointing! After experiencing the play, I would recommend spending no more than $6 per ticket. My daughter’s 4th grade play was much for fulfilling! The actors did their jobs but the production and content was a joke. How about a set change…nope. How about including a few more actors…nope just three! And to spend 3 plus hours walking us thru every decade of history from the 1800’s but then not having the time or decency to spend time on the 20 years leading up to the largest financial default in history is an absolute crime. On a positive note, the theater was very nice.
This is a great show highlighting Lehman Brothers 140 storied history. The three actors are outstanding. A must see for many different audiences.
This show is enjoyable. Acting is great. Story is interesting. However, this is all secondary to the fact that it is UNNECESSARILY long. This could have been done well in 2.5 hours rather than 3 hours 20 minutes. And they don't even cover the 2008 financial crisis that brought Lehman down. First 2 acts need significant editing to shorten and make show more complete.
Go see this show! It is impressive. I love the way it is written and the actors brilliantly bring it to life. I'm still blown away by how many characters are played by just three actors and yet they do it so well that the audience is not confused by what is going on. Also loved the set, the lighting and the sound. This felt like binge watching a really great docuseries. Where you start one episode and can't stop watching until you have finished all three
Amazing!! So spellbound by the 3 gifted actors performing 20 + characters Brilliant performance matched with perfect set, sound, and lighting! The 3 hours flew by!! Bravo!!!
A 3 hour, 3 actor play? It was so good that the time flew by.
Very well acted, directed and staged; therefore, the three plus hours flew by
