About

THE LEHMAN TRILOGY, winner of the 2022 Tony Award for Best Play, weaves together nearly two centuries of family history in an epic theatrical event charting the humble beginnings, outrageous successes, and devastating failure of the financial institution that would ultimately bring the global economy to its knees. Told in three parts over one evening, THE LEHMAN TRILOGY is the quintessential story of western capitalism, rendered through the lens of a single immigrant family. On a cold September morning in 1844, a young Jewish man from Bavaria stands on a New York dockside dreaming of a new life in the new world. He is soon joined by his two brothers, and an American epic begins. 163 years later, the firm they establish--Lehman Brothers--spectacularly collapses into bankruptcy, triggering the largest financial crisis in history.

TimeLine Theatre's production of THE LEHMAN TRILOGY is its Chicago premiere. The Broadway production of THE LEHMAN TRILOGY was met with extraordinary international acclaim. The Guardian proclaimed it "a kaleidoscopic social and political metaphor" and "an intimate epic about the shifting definition of the American Dream." The Chicago Tribune praised it as "a masterwork" and The New York Times as "a vivid tale of profit and pain." Vanity Fair raved that it is "true blockbuster theatre that will hold you captive until the final curtain call," with Time Out New York saying "it leaves you dazzled." And The Wall Street Journal declared that THE LEHMAN TRILOGY "surpasses all praise."

Good Production of an Interesting Story

by stelewci on 11/24/23Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Having spent a career in finance, I knew a bit about the Lehman Bros. story before seeing the show. The show did a good job telling the rags to riches story. The script imbellishments/intentional inaccuracies in the time line may have helped move the production along on stage, but they nevertheless distracted somewhat if one knew the story before seeing the show. That said, the acting and production values were first rate. We saw the understudy for Mayer the night we went to the production and we commented that he was so good, hard to imagine he was not the featured performer. Would recommend this to others, particularly since it highlighted their interconnectivity with with the transition of the South during and after the Civil War.

    A true theatrical experience

by Antanas on 11/21/23Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

This play is one of the best plays I have ever seen out of the 300-400 plays I have attended over the decades. It is one of the few plays I have deigned to see twice, originally in it's Broadway version. It's historical breadth is voluminous and it's staging is intricately entertaining. The actors were equal to their Broadway peers. In short, it has instantly become a classic play that you can't miss experiencing. The venue was also welcoming and the seating much more comfortable than the typical live theater.

    Extraordinary Acting

by Khirsch on 11/18/23Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

The Lehman Trilogy is a theater experience. The three cast members take on the roles of several generations of characters with aplomb. They bring history to life. with a minimum of props. They help the audience visualize what times were like for the generations of the Lehman family and the discord among the family. The dialog paints a picture for the audience, and engages theater goers with comedy and tragedy. A gem of a production.

    Fantastic

by Lynebg on 11/18/23Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

I was really nervous when I saw how long the show was to be. However, the time went by quickly as the story progresses steadily. Really interesting story, fabulous performances by just three characters playing all parts. I can’t even fathom how you learn all the dialogue that was in the show. Well worth seeing.

Well done in a intimate theater.

by AnnGlenn on 11/18/23Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Very well done story of the family history. Fast paced and engaging. Only negative was the cold temperature in the theater. Sounds like they know of the issue, but choose not to do anything about it. Also, the Ticketmaster app tickets could not be read by the ushers. Had to get in line to obtain a paper ticket.

    Great Show, Freezing Theater

by ChiLAW on 11/14/23Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

I thought the Lehman Trilogy was great. The three actors were amazing in their fast paced dialogue for multiple characters. What an amazing to move the story forward in a succinct way without seeming rushed. It was a long production, but did not seem so. What did make it seem long was the fact that the theater was so cold. I overheard a patron say that she was told that was because the actors on stage were wearing coats under the lights. That may have been a valid reason for this show, but I saw Samantha Bee the previous week and she was wearing a light jacket. Her show was only 75 minutes long, and people were complaining about being cold. Fortunately, because of that experience I was prepared for the much longer Lehman Brothers (scarf and gloves!). I see a lot of theater in Chicago and NYC and have never been in theater to cold in middle-aged life!

    Talented actors and great story

I was a bit concerned with the length of the play but it went by so fast! The actors are amazing pulling off so many characters. Great play!

    Outstanding!!

by Little Red on 11/12/23Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

The show was amazing. From the cast to the tech design, it completely kept my interest despite the 3 hour running time. Special kudos to the cast who were on stage continuously and played numerous different roles. Live theater at its best.

    Better than expected

by JMB39 on 11/11/23Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

I heard that it was good and was over 3 hours but I wanted to say that the time went fast and the subject matter was very interesting. There were 2 intermissions so you can get up and stretch. The Lehman had a very interesting story over many years.

    A Tour de Force!

by RayRay on 10/31/23Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

This is a Chicago-specific version of The Lehman Trilogy and it is spectacular. The three actors have the chops and charm to make this marathon of a play engaging from the first moment to the last. It's a history lesson through the lens of one Jewish family in pursuit of the American Dream. This is the sort of theater that Chicago is famous for; deep, meaningful and excellent.

Not sure where the hype came from

by TBBL on 10/31/23Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

I was very disappointed. After hearing the rave reviews, decided to go. Got to watch 3 men play every role (including females) for a story that spends centuries. Without ever changing clothes. Very confusing. And the storytelling was pretty weak. No mention of the Shearson-Lehman merger. No time spent on the fall. If I hadn’t known the story - I wouldn’t have learned it there!

    Frustrating

by Shad on 10/31/23Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Why is it that actors drop the volume on the last/key word of every punch line? For someone with mild hearing deficit this is maddening. Otherwise, it was an impressive production.

    A surprise

by BillScott on 10/31/23Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

A very interesting story of immigration grit wealth and family. Following the characters was difficult but the playbill’s timeline and back story helped. The acting was convincing.

    Great job!!

by Jill on 10/30/23Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

The three actors that played the various roles did an amazing job. The set was clever. The story was interesting and I especially enjoyed The Backstory that was included in the Playbill. My only complaint was that 3 hours was entirely too long for this show.

    Not to be missed

by Theater Lover on 10/30/23Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

It was a 3hour theater experience not to be missed. There are only 3 men who represent all the members of their families. They are on stage almost continuously! Amazing ! What a saga!
