About

Boldly confident lead vocals, subtle harmonies and spare, acoustic-driven instrumentation made The Judds' recordings one of the most unique blocks of work in American music and cemented them as one of the most successful musical duos of all time. Their choice of songs emphasized traditional values and empathy for people engaged in everyday struggles. Although they only performed regularly between 1983 and 1991, they became music royalty to their fans and were recently inducted into the prestigious Country Music Hall of Fame.

Naomi Judd was born Diana Ellen Judd in Ashland, Kentucky, on Jan. 11, 1946. Her daughter, Wynonna, was born Christina Ciminella in Ashland on May 30, 1964. They moved to Los Angeles where Diana's second daughter, Ashley Ciminella, was born on April 19, 1968. Diana renamed herself Naomi, and Christina became Wynonna before they relocated to Nashville in 1979.

In 1980, Naomi worked at Williamson County Medical Center as a nurse and she began pursuing a musical career for herself and Wynonna, making appearances on Ralph Emery's local morning television show.  In 1982, their break came via a chance encounter with Nashville producer Brent Maher, whose teenage daughter - a schoolmate of Wynonna's - was injured in a car accident.  Maher recognized Naomi from her television appearances and when Maher's daughter was discharged, Naomi gave Maher a tape she & Wynonna had made.  Maher started working with them and following a live audition, they secured a recording deal with RCA/Curb Records.

The Judds first single, "Had a Dream (For the Heart)," was released in November 1983 and made it to No. 17 on the Billboard country chart.  Their next single, "Mama He's Crazy," was their first No. 1 song at country radio and won them their first Grammy award in 1984. All but two of their next 16 singles when to No. 1, including "Why Not Me," "Have Mercy," "Grandpa (Tell Me 'Bout The Good Ole Days)," and "Rockin' With the Rhythm of the Rain."  The duo released six studio albums and would go on to sell over 20 million records, win 5 Grammy Awards, 9 CMA Awards, and 8 ACM Awards.  In 1986, The Judds received their first of three nominations for CMA Entertainer of the Year, making 22-year old Wynonna the youngest person ever to be nominated for the honor - a distinction she held for more than 20 years.

In October 1990, Naomi announced her retirement from performing due to chronic hepatitis.  In 1991, The Judds embarked on a 124-date Love Can Build A Bridge Farewell Tour and ended it on December 4 in Murfreesboro, TN with a Pay-Per-View special, and it was one of the biggest selling tours of all time.  "Love Can Build A Bridge" was their final single, released in December 1990, and was their last top 5 single.

Wynonna exploded onto the music scene in 1992 as a solo music superstar.  Her first 3 singles, "She Is His Only Need," "I Saw the Light," and "No One Else on Earth," all reached No. 1, as did her 1996 single, "To Be Loved By You."  Named "the voice of her generation" by Rolling Stone, her remarkable solo career launched her into pop culture icon status.  She published her memoir, Coming Home to Myself in 1993.  Naomi published her autobiography, Love Can Build A Bridge, in 1993.

Naomi & Wynonna reunited occasionally, performing at the halftime show for Super Bowl XXVIII in 1994, a 2000 reunion tour, the Stagecoach Festival and Calgary Stampede in 2008, and the Last Encore Tour in 2010-2011.

The Judds made their triumphant return to the CMT Music Awards stage (CBS) on April 11 to perform their chart-topping and international hit, "Love Can Build A Bridge," filmed at the Music City Walk of Fame Park with the Country Music Hall of Fame behind them, and announced they would be reuniting one last time for The Judds: The Final Tour.  With the tragic passing of Naomi on April 30, this would turn out to be their final performance together.  "Love Can Build A Bridge" was the #1 selling single on the Country Digital Song Sales chart for the week ending May 5, 2022.

Wynonna made the decision to continue The Final Tour as a musical celebration of her mother's legacy, announcing that a different artist will join her on stage in each city to perform some of the classic and timeless Judds hits.

    The Dudds

by venuewashorrible on 12/2/10Mystic Lake Casino Hotel - Prior Lake

I was very excited to see this concert. Spent a small fortune on the tickets as well. I'm pretty sure that Naomi Judd isn't all there. She spent the entire time twirling around the stage in 3 or 4 different outfits and standing at the edge of the stage talking to the front row of the audience. She spent very little time singing. Luckily, even as she was losing her voice, Wynonna was great! She's incredible, but it was disappointing when all the top hits of the "Judds" were to be sang that it was pretty much a one person show. Even when the big hits were sang, they spent the whole time talking to the crowd and having the crowd sing...I spent $200 in tickets to hear THEM sing! Oh, and who has an intermission at a concert? That was a first for me.

LOVED THE SHOW...THRILL OF A LIFETIME

by tko4cats on 12/2/10i wireless Center - Moline

I was so excited to be sitting in the second row, before the concert started, I thought I was going to cry. It was an OUTSTANDING concert for those of us who love the JUDDS music and talent. Worth every penny. Wish I could etch it in my memory so I could replay it in my head. The Judds music has gotten me through many a dark day or days. Wish I could go to the concert in Council Bluffs, Iowa too. It was THAT good. Inspirational, uplifting, fun, and delightful.... THANKS!!!!! I bought NINE tickets for this concert. I gave two away to someone who wanted to go but who couldn't afford it. I sold the other five tickets. One of the gals who bought a set of tickets from me sent me the nicest email in world saying how her mother was so thrilled to be there and was so happy she cried on the way home with tears of joy. I did NOT scalp the extra tickets I sold. I bought numerous tickets until it came up with second row availability because I LOVE THE JUDDS and they warm my heart and encourage me not to give up even when the heartaches of life threaten to hold me back and keep me down. The five women who bought my extra tickets shared my feelings about how AWESOME the concert was.....It was wonderful!

    Wy was sick

by DRJ8773 on 12/2/10Mystic Lake Casino Hotel - Prior Lake

Wy was sick and couldn't hit the high notes. Naomi couldn't be heard - either she lost her voice or her mike went dead. Their on stage demeanor was good and they are easy to like.

This was worth every penny! To have an opportunity to see two iconic legends perform in front of my own eyes just blows me away! The songs were wonderful, the lighting was spectaular and just knowing that I got to be a part of their "family" for a night will leave a lasting memory for years to come.

    Full of soul

by Bigfan777 on 12/2/10Mystic Lake Casino Hotel - Prior Lake

LOVED the Judds concert. Went to Mystic Lake Casino in MN and the venue held about 2200 people. It was just an incredibly personal experience. The Judds were charming and interacted with the crowd in such a fun way! Wynonna was a little under the weather but what a trooper. She came out and just sang beautifully and with such heart and soul. She even shed a few tears from the music and you could tell she was really connected to the experience. It was just so much fun and it was nice to finally just have someone in front with a guitar singing great country hits without all the lights and fireworks. I feel she has one of the best voices in country music to date. LOVED IT!! Want to go again. Only thing I didn't like was Mystic Lake security and venue was not set up to really get up and dance and get into the music like I wanted to. The speaker sound wasnt' the best either at Mystic. But Judds were AWESOME. Wynonna is a true example of someone who loves country music and can sing it better than most. Wynonna and Naomi are both STUNNING and beautiful and their personalities are so warm and entertaining. The relationship between them was so sweet as well. Just a great experience...GO!

    The Judds

by spotsrus on 12/2/10Mystic Lake Casino Hotel - Prior Lake

Wynona's voice wasn't cooperating with her and she couldn't hit her notes on 1/3 to 1/2 of her songs. Naomi was good and the light show was good. Tickets were waaaayyyyy over priced, they should have been 1/2 the price regardless of the poor performance of Wynona.

    Still an Amazing Voice

by LalaMN on 12/2/10Mystic Lake Casino Hotel - Prior Lake

Wynonna had a cold and couldn't hit the highest notes- but she gave it her all and still had a resounding, heavenly voice. I hope her version of How Great Thou Art makes it to iTunes!

by tootie029 on 12/2/10Mystic Lake Casino Hotel - Prior Lake

If you love country music....this is a must see show. The two of them are beyond amazing. They both have been through enough, and seeing them on stage, it is amazing the strength they show. They are both an inspiration and it shows in their concerts.

The Judds The Last Encore is not to be missed!

by SeptSister on 12/2/10Mystic Lake Casino Hotel - Prior Lake

The night with the Judds was so awesome! I went with my parents who absolutely loved it. Those ladies were so personable and sweet to fans...they took pictures throughout the show and made a point of interacting with the crowd. The music was phenomenal and they did all the major hits - both from the Judds and Wynonna's solo career. Don't leave after the final set....they come back for an encore and do some lovely holiday songs.

The Judds as we knew them are over

by ToJoPow on 12/2/10i wireless Center - Moline

This should have been called the Wynona show, featuring appearances by Naomi. Wynona was fine but we were looking forward to an old-fashioned Judds concert and this was a long way from it. Also, quite heavy on the religious aspect.

Wynonna Rocks and we loved mom too!

by wyfan4ever on 12/1/10i wireless Center - Moline

This was the fourth time our family has seen Wynonna (three times with Naomi). It was wonderful as usual. Wynonna is by far our favorite female vocalist all around! She is getting better with age and life experience. We drove three hours to see the Judds perform together again, and it was well worth it. As we are not just country fans, it is so great to hear Wy playing pop, rock and gospel as well. We sure would love to see radio playing her more.

    Wynonna was amazing!

by wyfan4ever on 12/1/10i wireless Center - Moline

The Judds were amazing and brought back a lot of great memories. I especially liked the old videos and pictures in the background during the concert. Wynonna's voice sounded a bit raspy, perhaps she was sick, but was simply amazing. Her solo sets were the highlight of the show for me. I liked Naomi's outfit changes but didn't feel like I could hear her singing at all. Many of the people around me thought the same thing. After the intermission the backup singers and band seemed to be jacked up louder and could hardly hear Wynonna. The balance was pretty off between The Judds and the band.
