    A short performance

by Anonymous on 10/28/11Carolina Theatre - Durham

The performance was about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Too short by my standards. It equaled my driving time to the theatre

    Excellent Show

by Catawamp on 10/28/11Carolina Theatre - Durham

Lucked out on some of the late released front row tickets. Went with another longtime Jayhawks fan. Beautiful job on recent renovations at the Carolina Theater. Mark Olsen was visibly pleased with the animated crowd. Gary Louris was plugged in, which was an exciting contrast from some solo acoustic shows in the recent past. Band was really accessible, came out to the merch table. Tift Merrit was a solid opener. I was surprised and pleased to see Eric Heywood backing her and he came out later and played steel during some Jayhawks songs.

Mark Olsen started out a little rough, the first song was a disaster, he was speaking not singing. But he warmed up and got much better. The encore, Love Hurts, was one of the best songs they did.

    JayHawks-OK

    by boca1 on 10/28/11Carolina Theatre - Durham

As a Jayhaws fan I will never say they weren't good, but I must say I came away a little disappointed. Not in their effort and/or committment to put on a great show, but I found the vocals to be a little thick?, dense? Sound system perhaps. I'm aware 2-part harmonies are hard to pull off live so maybe that was it. Finally, yes, I enjoyed the show, and probably spoiled by their crystal clear, sharp studio recordings. Also the Carolina Theater is an OUTSTANDING venue. Reminds be of a smaaller version of the Beacon in NYC. No bad seats at all unless your in the 2nd balcony which I haven't been to-fear of heights.

The Jayhawks and Tift Merritt Awesome show

by MynamewastoshortBob on 10/28/11Carolina Theatre - Durham

Great show, hope they come back next year sometime! They have been the best kept secret for years. True song writing and musical talent on display. Tift impressed me enough to purchase a cd after the show. Please bring them back.

    Perfect Show

    by Tarheel97 on 10/28/11Carolina Theatre - Durham

The Jayhawks played what i would consider the ultimate set list. Good mix of old and new songs, and the harmonies were absolutely perfect. To top it all off, they played "Love Hurts" for the encore the best I've ever heard it. If that wasn't enough, Tift Merritt was absolutely amazing as the opening act. If you ever get a chance to see her, don't miss it. After the set she was out signing cd's in the lobby and was so gracious and nice. Overall, probably the best concert I have been to in 20 years, and that's saying a lot. First time at The Carolina Theater in Durham. A new favorite.

HUGE disappointment - singing way off-key!

by Halvination on 10/27/11Carlina Theatre - Durham

I've seen the Jayhawks live many, many times. But I've never seen them with Mark Olson, so I was really excited to catch this reunion tour. Tift Merritt opened and was pretty good. From the moment the Jayhawks started, they seemed and sounded completely uninspired and bored. Mark Olson's voice was off-key for almost every song - it completely ruined the show for me. It felt like they had just gotten into a huge argument backstage and then came on to play. Very little interaction with the audience. I have seen hundreds of concerts in my life, and I have NEVER walked out early. The singing was so painful and treacherous we left after 6 songs. Really a shame since the harmonizing is such a great part of the Jayhawk's music, especially those old songs Mark and Gary sang together. The drummer and Gary sang "Tampa to Tulsa" together and it sounded GREAT. Proof positive that Mark was having an off night with his voice. I asked the soundman if he was giving Mark enough monitor so he could hear himself, and as is the case with every soundman I've ever spoken to, he was incredibly self-defensive and refused any input from me. It's a field that is inherently customer-listener oriented, but the people who do it don't care what anyone thinks. I would avoid this show unless it's in an intimate place. The new material didn't sound good, but I can't trust this concert as a litmus test for it. Might be good - dunno.

the jayhawks i love them still

by karmah1 on 10/25/11Beacon Theatre - New York

I saw the jayhawks perform at webster hall back in the winter, so was excited to see them again at the beacon.....my favorite nyc venue! roseanne cash, the opening act, was great. the jayhawks at webster hall was a much more intimate show than at the beacon, so if i had to pick the two, i'd say i enjoyed webster hall better, but i still enjoyed seeing them just the same. seeing mark & gary back together makes you just feel happy. i know rainy day music isn't probably appropriate to be playing in a reunion tour, but i would have liked to hear a few more from that album....they did play one song. the beacon is a great venue-----the staff are friendly, it's run very well. they discourage people from using their iphones with camera's during the show which i really appreciated. places like the united theater are a different story....forget it!

    Pristine country

by KenD on 10/24/11Beacon Theatre - New York

A fine, enjoyable no-frills show at the Beacon. Can the hall be a highlight? The sound was spectacular. Roseanne Cash opened with a one hour set featuring mostly songs from Black Cadillac and The List. A highlight was a beautiful version of Ode to Billy Joe with just John Leventhal on guitar. The Jayhawks set on a bare stage had no showmanship at all - just great songs with heavenly harmonies.

    Very Good, Not Great

    by Gunnerman19 on 10/24/11Beacon Theater - NYC

I just saw the Jayhawks with Roseann Cash at the Beacon in NYC. This is my fourth time seeing the Jayhawks, and considering I love their music, I found their performance a bit disappointing. I love the new material, so I had no beef with the setlist, but it just seemed as though the volume was too low and that their performance lacked some intensity. The crowd was terrific, as was exhibited by their rousing applause for the tremendous set played by Roseann Cash. (truly a treasure) The jayhawks were far more inspired at Webster Hall in January than they were on Friday night. The set seemed rushed and a bit short. I enjoyed the show, but since I had been holding the tickets since early August, expected more.

    Rosanne Cash/Jayhawks at the Beacon

by MichaelP on 10/24/11Beacon Theatre - New York

I was surprised because I thought that the Jayhawks were the opening act for Rosanne Cash, but it was the other way around. Cash's vocals were even better than I imagined. She did a nice set from all of her albums. The Jayhawks didn't quite take it up a notch.

Jayhawks was uninspired, R. Cash was memorable

by Anonymous on 10/24/11Beacon Theatre - New York

First time seeing the Jayhawks and after being a long time fan since the early 90's. My wife and I were really looking forward to the sweet vocal harmonies from this great band, but we left the show after enduring 55 mins. of an unspired performancce and off key singing. The beautifullly reconditioned Beacon had all the makings of a great show with R. Cash opening, which she performed wonderfully from the first song to last. She was everything the Hawks weren't - engaging the audience, sweet vocals, great stage presence; even when a feedback caused her to stop a song , she blew it off, made a fun note to missing an important lyric that would change the song, she rekindled the moment, set the song from the beginning, which she then nailed. It was not the Jayhawks night, but first impressions at lasting. Still listening to one of my favorite groups, but disappointed.

    horrible

by JaketheSnake on 10/24/11Beacon Theatre - New York

The concert was so bad I am thankful no one threw tomatoes at The Jayhawks. They avoided all the great music made while Mark was out of the band.

    Jayhawks were terrible

by elrosa on 10/24/11Beacon Theatre - New York

Thank God Rosanne Cash performed. She was excellent. The jayhawks were a huge disappointment. They sounded terrible. It was a sad show to witness. I am a huge fan of their music & was excited to see them for the first time. It was obvious they do not go on the road much - or maybe it is time to get off the road, They could learn a lot from Rosanne. She is a seasoned professional.

The Beacon must've forgotten to upgrade its sound system when it renovated the place. It's still one of the best venues in NY to see a music show, and opening act Roseanne Cash didn't disappoint. The Jayhawks were very good, but I wish they'd featured more music from "Rainy Day" and "Smile." Having Mark Olson back as the vocalist might've discouraged the band from having Gary Louris sing too many songs.

    Jayhawks good but not great

by murraymusic on 10/23/11Beacon Theatre - New York

felt show at beacon was good but not great. too many new songs, and not enough old songs and classics. seemed like band avoiding albums/songs that mark olson was not on. Plus was somewhat short, about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Seems like Beacon forces some bands to end by certain time (approx 11PM), have seen this with other shows there, but not with Allman bros.

Rosanne Cash was smooth and sweet but almost a little too mellow. I have always enjoyed her music but I was primarily interested seeing the Jayhawks. What a tremendous disappointment. They were oppresively uninspired and offensively bored and boring. I thought it might just be me but my wife, my 22 year old son and his girlfriend were of exactly the same mind. When I ran into several other friends and couples at the end of the concert, they were all as disappointed and even as angry as I.

Cash was great as usual She connects to the audience. The Jayhawks do not!!!!!!! I might as well have just stayed home and listened to their music on my ipod and saved city parking and a 2 hour trip into the city in traffic. The Jayhawks were boring. No stage presence.Left before they were finished as did a lot of other people.

Rosanne Cash - Thumbs up -- Jayhawks - Thumbs do

by YesFan2 on 10/23/11Beacon Theatre - New York

Rosanne Cash was great - great songs, lot of energy - good band. Jayhawks had no energy. Expected much more. They seemed to sleepwalk through concert. Every song sounded the same.
