THE GROWLERS IN CONCERT:
SoCal garage and psych rock favorites The Growlers continued to evolve in 2014 with their third album Chinese Fountain, an ambitious record that expanded their laid-back "beach goth" sound with polished arrangements and crisp production. While the album marked a mature new direction for the band, their outrageous live shows remained as satisfyingly madcap as ever, treating ticket buyers to colorful wigs, outré makeup, cross-dressing, and assorted props and antics. Whether the band is conjuring up the retro haze of "One Million Lovers" or basking in the disco strut of "Chinese Fountain" , they always deliver an unforgettable concert experience that combines eccentric theatricality with first-rate musicianship.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
The Growlers formed in Southern California in 2006 and quickly made a name for themselves with their trippy, reverb-soaked take on '60s pop. After several early lineup changes the band settled on their core roster of Brookes Nielson (vocals), Matt Taylor (lead guitar), Anthony Braun Perry (bass), Kyle Straka (keyboards, guitar), and Scott Montoya (drums) and released their 2009 debut album Are You In or Are You Out? They followed up in 2010 with the Hot Tropics EP, a critically acclaimed collection chock-full of compact psych-rock jams like "Sea Lion Goth Blues" and "Graveyard's Full". In 2012 the band hosted the first annual Beach Goth Party, a showcase of modern surf rock and neo-psych bands that featured performances by local favorites including Dante Vs Zombies, Tijuana Panthers, and Summer Twins. They kept the vibes flowing in early 2013 with the release of their sophomore record Hung at Heart, a critically acclaimed collection that Filter magazine described as having a “little something for everybody”. In 2014 The Growlers released their third album Chinese Fountain, a polished release that they backed up with a series of rollicking, psychedelic performances on tour.
Great show! They sound great live and the energy was amazing. We got to dress up and vibe to the music.
Venue was great, drinks were good, sound was on point, 10/10 would go again
Sound quality was okay, love their music and vibe though, didn’t play a few hits that aren’t their main hits so understandable, good new album
The best show I have ever been too!! Over sabbath and maiden hands down! Great show love the growlers!!
The Growlers were good, they sounded great and they played well. But it seemed rushed or routine and there was little to no interaction with the audience or chat from the band. I'd rate a show amazing if the band talked more, got involved with the atmosphere, or engaged themselves beyond what is heard on the albums.
The Growlers sound exactly like they do on the album. Tons of energy and crowd interaction. I had a great time.
Saw them two nights in a row, and they were incredible. Would highly recommend!!
Brooks was sick I believe with bronchitis but holy shit did he put on one hell of a show The whole band is some pretty awesome guys they’re really nice even had the chance to get them to sign a poster,
I really enjoy The Growlers, but they were really really bad live.
The venue was great and the growlers were really awesome!!
rude workers at the dingy and gross venue put a major damper on my favorite bands show. They were great as always.
I'm obsessed with the Growlers. I couldn't have asked for more.
The band looked like they couldn't wait for the show to end. No energy, flat, and then the lead singer dipped off stage for a few songs. It was a weird show.
The Growlers are a great band, always go to their shows. BUT please make a 21 and older show. The high school crowd made it freaken horrible.
Doors opened at 6, we were there 2 hours before and got to be front row. Definitely worth it! even though it was raining, the band still played every single song. Incredible sound so gooood!
Great set list. Great atmosphere. Great Venue. Staff andService was excellent. The Growlers showed up and performed beyond expectations!
My bf is a big fan of this band for years. He recently introduced their music to me & I love it too. Their energy & sound is great live- had me dancing harder than half the peeps there who prob have known them for longer. Cool, intimate, inviting-dungeon-like venue too @ The Paradise. Would def be down to see them again! I heard from some other fans there that sometimes the lead singer doesn't sound as good, but this show was on point!
A few years back when I first heard The Growlers I thought they had a sound like the doors with Bob Dylan leading, and their lyric always deliver a dirty colorful Californium of love and hate. The lyrics are still great although the sound has changed a bit. In Boston they had new mariachi outfits and a neon City Club sign. The cloths seemed to be perfect for there ever changing style of unwashed street rat-hood. At one point in the show I smelled the strong smell of sweat bThey played a great mixture of old and new music, "Bad Land" and "Sealion Goth Blues" were thankfully played. I look forward to seeing them again soon.
There is really nothing to say except this concert was amazing. The stage presence was great, the venue was great. Late night slice was on deck, which was great. And the band preformed so beautifully, i think I cried.
Really great show. Band was awesome and we were right up in front of the stage.
