CS Lewis Comes Alive on Stage

by A Happy Audience Member on 8/2/22Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - Boise

The book, The Great Divorce, is a complex allegory for the divide between heaven and hell. While not ever intended as a theological treatise, CS Lewis was trying to illustrate a point. This production takes the highlights of many of the vignettes of the book, brings them to life, and makes that point. Even with a very small cast and a minimal set, the production was done at a very high level. The three of the four actors transitioned from role to role to role throughout the 90 minutes. Incredible versatility! Funny (as in: laugh out loud funny) and weighty all at the same time. See it if you can and take your family.

Aggressive TSA at entrance but great play!

by Nanci on 8/2/22Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - Boise

Unexpectedly, there was an aggressive, fully-outfitted TSA-police weapons and body cavity search at the entrance. Besides this off-putting experience, we continued into the center exchanging glances and comments of concern for patriot-loving America. The production was outstanding: graphics, actors and after-production discussion. I would have went a second night if offered!

    Enlightening!

by Teena on 8/2/22Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - Boise

I read the book recently and was thrilled it was brought to life in this fabulous production. The book was descriptive enough for my imagination but the live performance and visuals made it even more enlightening. I could see this over and over and see things more clearly each time. Great Experience!

    What a great time!

by Redhaven on 8/2/22Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - Boise

I was a little apprehensive to see the show. Book adaptations can be really scary. It felt like they understood and appreciated the material. I may or may not have shed some tears during the performance... :)

Very creative adaptation - Lewis would be proud!

by Joe on 7/16/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

I wish everyone would have the opportunity to attend this brilliant performance of one of CS Lewis's greatest works! I have loved this story and referenced it for years, but most people (even Lewis fans) haven't read it. The production and cast did a tremendous job of helping the audience visualize the fantastical journey and made the characters and their dialogues (and monologues) quite compelling. I could hardly believe that somewhere in the order of 20+ characters were portrayed by a cast of 4! Especially in light of a limited budget, this theater company did wonderful justice to the story in so many respects, from acting talent to costume design to creative use of several suitcases. :) I would certainly go back and recommend this to anyone who can manage to secure a ticket!

    We loved the show!

by JeanBears on 7/15/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

We loved the depth of this show as well as the talent of the actors. It was amazing that only 4 actors told the whole story! We especially loved the discussion afterwards. What an unexpected bonus to the show!

It was a wonderful show. Loved the discussion afterwards. I saw it some years ago and it seems to have gotten even better.

    Excellent Introduction to CS Lewis

by chuckwagon on 7/14/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

I have to admit I had low expectations for the show. I had not read the book but had seen a summary of things. What I appreciated was that you were able to be entertaining AND thought provoking. This would be an excellent introduction to CS Lewis for those not as familiar with his Christian perspective. Keep up the great work.

“The Great Divorce” an Outstanding production

by Randy on 7/13/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

Excellent acting and stage production! Wasn’t sure the story could be recreated on stage, but was pleasantly surprised. Story line of the book was closely followed with few omissions. The stage production, scenery and lighting was creative. Actors performed masterfully.

Loved the show, venue was lacking

by David on 7/13/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

The show was phenomenal, loved it. The only thing was issues with the venue. Purchased tickets well in advance in order to get front row center seats. We unfortunately faced lots of traffic, traveling from 2 hours away to see this show. The parking had a wait to use the kiosk to pay for parking, causing us to be a couple minutes late, we were then told we would not get to sit in the seats we paid for, but had to sit in the balcony, I could have saved $100 by purchasing balcony seats, Vs what I paid for. While the show was great, this was not what I paid for.

    Mesmerizing!

by Jennifer on 7/13/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

This is the second time I have seen this production of The Great Divorce. As before the acting was top notch and the story compelling. It’s amazing that only 4 actors played all those roles. Please continue creating this outstanding work that is both entertaining and faith building. And please come back to Raleigh!!

    Good Intentions

by A. L. on 7/12/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

It all starts with good intentions and left to ourselves, we’ll, let’s just say there is nothing in and of ourselves that is good. Only He is good! Great play and cast!

    I found the play fascinating!

by Jamie on 7/12/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

The four actors did an amazing job of changing characters including accents, manners, attitudes, etc. to portray 22 different people. The costumes, backgrounds, and sound effects worked and helped set the tone. In his book, C.S. Lewis brilliantly portrayed so many of the roadblocks that people allow to come between them and faith in Jesus Christ and repentance, and this production was faithful to his vision.

    Amazing

by Jo Ellen on 7/12/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

This was a top notch performance and so worth the trip to see it. Not a disappointment at all. The play was well thought out and the technology for the scenes and back drop was great!! I would see it over again. Beautifully done and as always C.S. work is very moving and deep.

Phenomenal Performance that really makes you think

by Anonymous on 7/12/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

The stage show represented the concepts from book clearly and thoughtfully. It really made the book 'come to life'. And I really enjoyed the Q&A session at the end. It was great to hear what thoughts the show prompted in other folks' minds.

    Surprised by Joy

by Corky on 7/12/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

I expected the performance would be good-cause how could it not? However, the sheer delight of the experience exceeded my wildest hopes and dreams! So lovely to see something so thoroughly spiritually true. Loved the discussion after also. So refreshing to share a truly Christian experience without political rancor of any kind!

    Thought Provoking

by DB on 7/12/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

We thoroughly enjoyed watching C.S. Lewis's 'The Great Divorce', and found ourselves deep in thought of each character, and having conversations about how they apply in our attitudes or actions. Very well done! It was refreshing to attend a theatrical play that was one to penetrate the mind and be of spiritual things instead of the usual mindless garbage that is fed to us constantly. Thank you, well done, and encore!!!

Absolutely outstanding job by the 4 actors and the 20+ characters they portrayed. Loved how they integrated technology into this play. I have not read The Great Divorce and this play makes me want to go and read the book. Highly recommended for all to see.

Bus Ticket: Round Trip or One-Way?

by Ashley B. on 7/12/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

I pray I too will have the courage, as the ghost with the reptile did (the only one with a one-way ticket), when it is my time to shed my natural body. A truly moving performance from the entire cast!
