    Good But Not Great

by OneFinger on 3/12/11Newmark Theatre - Portland

Informative play, acting was good, and singing excellent. The boy playing the lead was fantastic with a very strong and clear voice. His performance was worth the price of the ticket. Scenery was innovative and appropriate for the setting. However, the play seemed a little laborious and I'd recommend a rewrite to make it more compact and less tedious. The actors did fantastic with the script they were given but it really needed 10-15 minutes cut. Glad I saw it once but I certainly wouldn't pay to see it a second time.

    Ghosts of Celilo was moving!

    by broadwaylover15 on 3/12/11Newmark Theatre - Portland

The music was haunting and beautiful with the native american songs. The story was a mystery and a love story. It was very moving and sad, but a "good" sad. I would recommend this to everyone.

Very well written. Very fair portrayal of the complicating nature of how these lives and issues converged. Redemptive qualities of denouement were quite appreciated by me as a viewer. I appreciated that the play was also quite informative for those who are unaware of the forced boarding schools and the indignation suffered there. The creative story line with the four ghosts needing to release themselves from their inner torture was brilliantly creative. I only gave 4 stars rather than 5 because I would have like to hear more Native drumming and honestly it would have been appropriate and appreciated to have seen more Native youth groups in the audience who may have been given the opportunity to see the play for free. So many seats where empty and it was a play so worth seeing and these seats could have been appreciated by deserving young students. Overall, a fantastic play with great acting and singing as well.

    Highly recommended

by highwaybiway on 3/12/11Newmark Theatre - Portland

Although there are some weak moments in some of the acting, the sets and music were wonderful. The story is based on true events and is quite moving. A good play for kids as well as adults. If I were taking kids, I'd so some advance preparation so events won't have to be explained during the musical. The band is excellent. We enjoyed it very much.

    Play was fantastic!

by dramafan on 3/12/11Newmark Theatre - Portland

This was an excellent play. It really portrays the kind of treatment that was forced upon the Native Americans. As a child I grew up 20 miles from Celilo Falls and spent many days watching the Indians fish the Falls. How sad the government decided to cover the Falls in the name of hydroelectric power. I thought it was nice to include the names of the tribes/nations along side the actors names in the program.

    Wonderful

by livingmusic on 3/9/11Newmark Theater - Portland

I attended this play at the weekend and was blown away with how powerful this story is and that it is based on events that happened here not that long ago. The three kids who played the main roles worked really well together & were very believable. Also, the kids in the school were a delight to watch especially the last scene of the first act. The set changes and lighting changes between the 'ghost' scenes and the 'story' were very well done and easy to follow. It has a very nice balance between native music and the traditional musical numbers my favorites being 'fishing at celilo' and 'Could I love the man. Overall, a wonderful night at the theater and I would thoroughly recommend this show.

    Ghosts of Celilo: Go!

by Willametta on 3/8/11Newmark Theatre - Portland

This is an amazing story that is part of the cultural heritage of everyone who calls him/herself an Oregonian. The production of the play was exceptional; well-deserving of all of the awards and accolades. Highly recommended!

Ghosts of Celilo well worth it

by AyeOne on 3/8/11Newmark Theatre - Portland

Marv Ross and the entire company did an amazing job distilling the native culture of Celilo Falls and the conflicting cultural thoughts of the time. My only critique is that at times the music (particularly the percussion) overwhelmed the dialogue and I couldn't hear. But, overall- wonderful!

    Beautiful!

by Artfreak on 3/8/11Newmark Theatre - Portland

I loved being in the presence of this story. And I loved the flow of the narrative, connecting these four "strangers" together as significant people in the lives of two young natives. I did miss more Celilo culture finding its way into the story, a little more about the huge role the salmon played in the heart of their culture. As Portlanders whose lives are made comfortable and maybe even possible by the building of the dam over the Falls, it seems fitting to know something of what it costs the Celilo tribe.

    Good History

by DPSA on 3/8/11Newmark Theatre - Portland

The show was enjoyable, and I thought the sets were particularly effective. I thought the opening was a bit slow and that more time could have been devoted to developing the romance in the story. The music was good, and I liked the way the Indian rhythms were adopted in some of the music.

The Ghosts of Celilo was unforgetable!

    by RSE1950 on 3/8/11Newmark Theatre - Portland

The acting was superb. Every character grabs you. The history told here was so complete I was amazed. I actually lived in The Dalles and was a child when this was going on. Although I knew of the falls going away, the impact never dawned on me. The destruction of a culture so complete as to take their children and tell them they had to learn a new language and culture and abandon their traditions and ways. Powerful. Very powerful. Thank you to all who contributed to this play and the unique perspective it presents to ignorant white people like myself.

by gardenbuff on 3/8/11Newmark Theatre - Portland

I loved this musical play! The impact of Celilo should not be forgotten and this play let us see and feel the intense issues that took place when Celilo was destroyed. The music was beautiful, the acting was very good as the play had many surprises, twists and turns that kept me in constant attention. Stories within stories....stories we all need to know.

    ghosts of Celio

by contessasflag on 3/7/11Newmark Theatre - Portland

Brilliant. Sad, poignant, riveting at times (especially the sounds of the falls and train . . .) This is as good as local theater can get and can easily compete with a national market. . . it's just that the subject matter is uniquely local-- to Oregon and those who have a strong interest in Native Americans . . .

    Very moving "Ghosts of Celilo"

by Yakimite on 3/7/11Newmark Theatre - Portland

This production did a very good job of dramatizing the impacts of the destruction of Celilo Falls - an event even Pacific Northwest residents generally know surprisingly little about. We took kids 9-12 years old and they handled the dark content well, although they were disappointed it didn't end on a more positive note. We still felt that the production (very nice set) and story were very good and were valuable in helping adults and kids alike better understand the damage of cultural assimilation in addition to what was physically lost with the destruction of the falls.
