The Fantasticks, the world's longest-running musical, is a captivating and simple romantic comedy about a boy, a girl, two fathers and a wall. The audience uses its imagination to follow El Gallo as he creates a world of moonlight and magic, and then pain and disillusionment, until the boy and girl find their way back to one other. The score, which includes "Try To Remember", "They Were You" and "Soon It's Gonna Rain", is as timeless as the story itself. Having played a record-breaking 17,162 performances in its original run at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in Greenwich Village, and recently celebrated its 20,000th performance at the Snapple Theater Center, The Fantasticks is a true New York institution which The Wall Street Journal calls "THE PERFECT MUSICAL".
Simply put, the Fantasticks was fantastic, or as we said to one of the cast, "Magnificent!" So glad it returned since we were not able to attend earlier.
Good story, performed well, sometimes I had a hard time understanding the actors as they appeared not to have wireless mics.
My niece came from out of state and had never been to a small Broadway production.....we loved it, not much more I could say!!
I specifically booked a ticket to come to a New York to see this show when I heard it was closing. The cast was incredible from "The Wall", "The Actors", "The Fathers", "The Boy & Girl" and to the "Narrator". The only thing that was disappointing was that the house was not sold out. Even if this wasn't the final week, this cast is deserving of sold out shows. Because it is the final week, people should come out in masses so the show could definitely be sold out and have standing room if allowed. Don't "Try" to remember but Instead, "Come" to remember. You won't be disappointed. Rather your soul will be uplifted with this wonderful rendition of a beautiful story.
FANTASTICK. Just as FANTASTICK as it was 36 years ago when I saw it at the Sullivan Street Playhouse.
This lovely little play/musical, The Fantasticks, is about young love. It has been around for over 50 years, but is thoroughly enchanting. The music is unforgettable, the intimacy of the theater quite unique, Take someone you love!!!! Because it is a tiny theater, advertising is prohibitive, so it does not get a lot of promotion, and so is scheduled to close in early May. What a tragedy!!!! The bigger tragedy is that it would close without you seeing it. I would happily go again!!!
Remember enjoying this show in the 70's, and the current version is just as good. The entire cast was terrific and the small theater made the performance all the more enjoyable. Highly recommended for children, young and old.
This revival of a true classic is supposedly closing soon. The casting is variable, with El Gallo being perfectly cast and portrayed. The Mute/the Wall is delightful. The only disappointment is the kowtowing to the PC represented by substituting an unentertaining "Abduction" version of the song, "It Depends On What You Pay" for the original.
Was disappointed with the wardrobe and some liberties taken with their interpretation.
We finally got to NYC and were able to attend The Fantasticks. The current cast is superb and the small theater setting is perfect for this play. Some wonderful comic touches as well as a thoughtful--even tho sentimental--story line. Great for our 13 and 10 year old grandkids.
great, fun show small venue so we felt we were part of the play
This play never loses its brilliants. It is as good as the first time I saw it in the 1960's. I loved it. I took my niece to see it for the first time and she loved it too. The songs are wonderful and the "Villain" was wickedly sexy and charming all in one. The fathers were delightfully funny and the Boy and Girl made me fall in love all over again. I cried at the end when they sang my favorite song Deep in December.....
Held attention and interest rapturously using sparse stage, minimal props and pure performing artistry!
El Gallo strongly carries the show. The boy is the weakest link. The poetic story hasn't changed in 55 years. It is still as current as it was when it was originated in 1960, in 1984 when I saw it last, and now - well, almost. Didn't really like hearing the neighbors running up the stairs of the building during the performance tho. It was a bit distracting - esp for my family who didn't know the show.
Have always wanted to see this and am glad I did. The cast was very good and the old fellows and El Gallo were terrific. It is a bit dated in some ways, but overall, well worth the price of the tickets- intimate theater near Broadway is charming for those who may never have experienced this sort of theater. It is a good inexpensive choice for great NY theater.
it was funny, actors were great and we had a great time. you won't be disappointed.
I felt like we were duped. Great reviews led us to believe we were going to an amazing show. It was no better than an average high school production.
You don't need a huge budget to make a show remarkable. The Fantasticks is a great low budget production with great actors, and music. All the audience enjoyed that wonderful show, and all were singing "deep in December, it's nice to remember..." You will enjoy a simple story greatly developed. Do you want to relax? go to the Fantasticks. All the personnel of the theater were nice, kind, helpful. Absolutely recommended. Thanks to the actors, thanks to the musicians, thanks to the producers!
At first, I was a a slightly unimpressed by the small theater and lack of set design. However, as soon as the show began, I appreciated the intimacy of the theater and the cozy atmosphere. It allowed audience participation and we were able to hear the clarity of the actors' voices and see the facial expressions of the characters. The actors were talented and the show was fabulous. Highly recommend!
I saw this play as a teenager and loved it. Seeing it now brought back many memories. I had forgotten so much of it and the music. The actors were great and the small theater made an intimate setting. We felt as if we were part of the event. The "old actors" from the trunk were the highlight. I'd see it again and again if I could.
