Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings deliver. One part Prince, one part Tina Turner, throw in some James Brown and add the voice of the incomparable Miss Jones and you've got something special. Her voice is so strong that the sound problems that plagued the first half of the show could not stop her. "I'll just have to sing a different way tonight", is how she dealt with the sound issue. Like truly great artists, she only got stronger as the night wore on. The second half of the show, with the sound all cleared up, was the most powerful mix of funk and R&B that this reviewer has ever seen or heard. She is the real deal and the Dap Kings are tight and have the horsepower to keep up with her incredibly forceful presence.
The real pleasant surprise of the night was the opening band, Fitz and the Tantrums. Two strong lead singers (male and female) and an interesting mix of keyboards, bass, percussion and sax (no guitar) created a sharp pop/rock and R&B experience. Picture british band, ABC, on sterioids. Great originals from a band to keep your eye on.
What a night!
