THE DAMNED IN CONCERT:

The Damned will go down in music history as the first British punk band to release a single, but most fans will remember them for the fury of their epic live shows. Adrenaline-fueled guitar solos and rapid-fire snare rolls are the order of the day wherever the group plays, and audiences always go crazy for their raw, unbridled sound. They balance their high-speed energy with gothic elements like eerie keyboard flourishes and Dave Vanian's dark vocals, and the result is a dynamic concert experience that stays true to their punk roots while also exploring more shoadowy territory. On tour The Damned tears through intense tunes like “Neat Neat Neat”, “New Rose”, and “Smash It Up” with savage intensity, treating ticket buyers to a high-octane punk rock spectacle that shakes them to their core.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Dave Vanian (vocals), Captain Sensible (guitar/bass), Rat Scabbies (drums), and Brian James (guitar) formed The Damned in 1976. That same year they beat all their punk contemporaries to the punch by releasing "New Rose", the first single of the British punk movement. They also released the first UK punk album, 1977's Damned Damned Damned, an instant classic that's as vital today as it was 30 years ago. Their early emergence on the scene and popularity allowed them to tour the US before any of their British peers, and they influenced numerous ‘80s hardcore bands in the process. The group added keyboards and began experimenting with tempo dynamics in the ‘80s -- two developments that proved pivotal to the goth movement. After being dormant in the ‘90s they reformed at the end of the decade and haven’t looked back since. The Damned are still going loud and  strong, bringing their signature sound to new generations of punk fans every time they tour.

This show was amazing, after all the years they still have it.

The Damned were Really Damned Good

by Gerry on 10/30/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

It's easy to think you're going to get a cabaret act when a band that's been around as long as the Damned have been plays. But no. They played everything off their stunning new record Darkadelic (which was more than I was hoping for) making the music seem fresh and vibrant and they sure seemed to be having fun. Great night.

Kind of like pizza, even when bad it’s good

by ScaryDave on 10/28/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

I’ve seen The Damned over 10 times since 2001, and this was the worst performance of theirs that I’ve seen. 8pm show with 3 bands on a Wed, headliner went late at 10:10p. Crowd was worn out, especially after two high energy openers. Headliner was uncharacteristically low energy compared to just a year ago or either opening act. Little to none of their usual stage banter until the last 1/4 of the set. 10 out of the first 13 songs were all new, past tours have featured just the singles or better paced the songs new/old/new. Over half the songs played were from the new album. Poor time management meant the set was cut short and one of not multiple classic songs were cut from the set in favor of playing nearly the entire new album. Still, while I wouldn’t have gone if I had know that was the experience I was going to have I still glad I went and enjoyed myself as always. I plan to see them the next time they are in the area in hopes of a show more on par with previous shows.

The Damned, still the most underrated band ever

by Daniel on 10/28/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

The Damned played a great long set on Wednesday night, and they still had a couple of songs on their set list that they didn’t get to, from their classic album Machine Gun Etiquette. I didn’t mind though, those are songs they have played at every show for years. What stood out is they played at least a half dozen songs from their new album Darkadelic which sounded great, an expansion on their last album, Evil Spirits. The Damned have been through so many musical phases over the years, they aren’t still the first punk band from 1977, although singer Dave Vanian and guitarist Captain Sensible retain that spirit. The audio was good at the show (as always at the Fillmore) and you could focus in on the Captain’s playing and realize how accomplished he is, with a recognizable style and sound that showed out well in the new songs. Dave Vanian, now in his mid-60s, looked and sounded as suave as ever, and it was a boost to have former bass player Paul Gray back in the band. I love all of the older Damned “hits,” but I appreciated that they went so deep on their new album, which they clearly feel good about and enjoyed playing, they are far from being a nostalgia act, they are full of new sound and lyrical ideas. After they thoroughly presented the new album, it was great when they played some of their great old songs including Fan Club, Just a Love Song, and Wait for the Blackout. The Damned have so many records now that they can’t play all of even their greatest song songs, so, unfortunately, nothing from the Strawberries album, even though that is one that Paul Gray played on originally. The new drummer, whose name I don’t recall was technically solid and he drove the band, but I still missed some of the wild abandon and unique fills of original drummer Rat Scabies. But he may loosen up if he stays in the band. I don’t know how it would be for someone who was coming to the band for the first time, whether their current sound would have sufficient appeal, but for people who have followed the Damned for some time, they’re in a great phase and well-worth seeing.

The worst band I ever saw!

by Oldmanmusic on 10/28/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

The damned were great as usual. But that piece of s@@t before them were deplorable. They were from the weak north Toronto canada. They think their name is cute but , it really shows how much class the maple leafs have.Dont bother coming back to maryland.

Good, but too many new songs

by Damned fan on 10/28/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

Love the Damned, and they were in fine form. Vanian’s voice is holding up well but was mitigated by the bass and drums being so prevalent in mix. For a band that doesn’t tour much i felt they played too many songs from Darkadelic. I like Darkadelic, but the inclusion of over half that albulm slowed momentum and cut out masterpieces that would have livened up show. Good show, not up to potential

The Damned May 2023 at Garden Walk in Anaheim, CA

by CEEJALADA on 5/28/23House of Blues Anaheim - Anaheim

I think I’ve seen the Damned at the House of Blues in Anaheim about 8 times over the years. I loved seeing the show but how can I not help but bring out my disappointment with Ticketmaster and the rising costs of concert tickets? I have been an avid concert goer most of my life. After coming out of the Covid lockdown I am suddenly faced with astronomical seat prices and have to miss so many shows I would have gone to. On this last purchase I didn’t realize I got redirected to another website and purchased a ticket. It was a resale site but I think it still ended up associating me with Ticketmaster. This just happened with another seat that I purchased last night online. I was charged double what I could’ve paid if I had just shown up at the door. I say lower the prices and more people can afford shows because my circumstances have changed and I just don’t have $1,000 to spend on bad seats. I am particularly irritated when I see people in these astronomical priced seats that aren’t even sitting there and they are just out socializing and don’t even seem like they know what show they are attending. HAVE MERCY for music lovers!

    Damned Amazing!

The Damned started it and they're keeping it going. You have not lived until you've gone three rotations in the pit to "Smash It Up."

    Sadly missed show.

by CR3 on 5/24/23The Belasco - Los Angeles

Was excited to see this show but due to the make-up Cruel World show with Iggy and Siouxsie had to miss it. I plan on attending the House of Blues show later in the week. Apologies to Dave, The Captain , and the rest of the band.

    Do not miss them

by Damned Fan on 5/24/23The Belasco - Los Angeles

This is by far, one of the best concerts I have attended in my life. The band was tight as no other. They played mostly material for their 2023 album "Darkadelic" and their classics from "Damned Damned Damned" and "Machine Gun Ettiquette" among others. Great connection with the public.

    I Love the Damned

by Eric on 5/24/23The Belasco - Los Angeles

The Belasco sound system was awful. I love listening to one of my alltime favorite bands through blown speakers. So glad the tickets were less then the gouge stabbing Ticketmaster has been doing recently.

    Damned Damned

by Moon Goddess on 9/3/22Bogart's - Cincinnati

The sound was horrible. Three years ago when I saw The Damned at Bogart's it was the best show I'd ever seen at Bogart's. This time the sound was horrible. We couldn't even hear Dave's vocals until half way through the show and even then it was muddy. New sound board issues delayed the start of their show and I felt like the set list was cut short because of the delay. Unfair to audience. If Dave could have heard what we heard (or weren't hearing when he sang) he'd cringe! Very disappointed. Susie Moon rocked. I liked her attitude.

    Good Performers -- Bad Promoter/Venue

by Brandon on 9/2/22Bogart's - Cincinnati

I love the Damned! Unfortunately, this was not a great show, and it was not the band's fault. Had some issues before we even got in: - As far as I can tell, opening acts were never actually announced - We had a bag that didn't meet venue specifications. Totally understandable that there's a bag policy, but it would have been WAY better to actually include these details when buying a ticket or on an event page, or somewhere else so it's clear BEFORE we show up - Our second time going through security was completely different than the first time. First time we emptied our pockets and there was a magnetic wand. After running the bag back to the car, we had to empty everything we had into bowls where somebody inspected everything with great detail (all keys, checking over our hair combs) and then we got a physical pat down. Very inconsistent having 2 different security processes and very weird. - According to the tickets and event page the show was supposed to start at 8PM. When we walked in at 7:55 we saw the first opening band finishing their set. Then there was the show: Before the Damned went on the stage manager(?) announced that they had lost some of their presets from soundcheck and they would need to fix some things, so it would be a short wait. So after some extra time, the band finally went on. The sound was horrible, and after they started the sound guy must have left because nobody bothered to make any adjustments. The keyboards could only be heard when no other instruments were playing. The main vocal was low. The backing vocals were almost silent. The amps were small, but they BLARED over the house sound. The band members tried to banter with the crowd and each other, but it was totally inaudible. If I hadn't ever seen the Damned before, I might assume they were just a horrible live band -- but I had seen them on their last American tour and knew better. Very disappointed with my experience here. I hope to see the Damned again, but I certainly won't bother coming back to Bogart's for it. This was my first time at Bogarts, and while the place LOOKS very nice, everything else fell way short of my expectations.

    Poor sound mixing

by Damned Upset on 8/31/22Bogart's - Cincinnati

I have been waiting for years because of Covid-19 for my favorite band to return. After 2 opening act’s performed and all there gear was removed they started setting up for The Damned but they were having issues with the sound levels and people were starting to get restless after probably a 45 minute delay they gave the green light. But myself and my brother could hear the lead singers voice on certain songs and it continued throughout the entire concert.

    The Damned

by Lynkz on 8/31/22Bogart's - Cincinnati

The Damned did not disappoint. They are at the top of their game! Their sound quality was excellent. I was very excited when they decided to play the smaller venue of Bogarts when the whole Blondie thing was cancelled. I prefer to see bands in smaller venues.

    Cincy

by Bubba on 8/31/22Bogart's - Cincinnati

I thought the performance was good to fair. Cincinnati was one of their last stops on this summer tour and it appeared that they were tired of being on the road. Maybe the lack of Captain Sensible dulled the fun for me. While the replacement was good, he did not have the animation of the Capt. Also they played one or two songs that were covers which is disappointing since their catalog is huge. I saw them before in 2019 and they were great. Color me disappointed in Cincy.
