Soulful folk-pop duo The Civil Wars has made quite a mark on the genre in just a few short years, hitting the tour trail with the likes of Emmylou Harris and Adele. Singer/songwriters Joy Williams and John Paul White met at a Nashville songwriting session and got to work on an EP entitled “Poison & Wine” with producer Charlie Peacock, the title track of which appeared on the popular TV show “Grey’s Anatomy.”
“Barton Hollow,” The Civil Wars’ full-length debut, surfaced in early 2011 and landed at the top of Billboard’s Independent Albums and Folk Albums charts. It wasn’t long before the two musicians were performing on nighttime television talk shows on both sides of the pond, as well as tackling concerts at the Newport Folk Festival and the iconic Grand Ole Opry.
The Civil Wars also took home Grammy Awards for Best Folk Album and Best Country Duo/Group Performance for the title track, as well as an AMA Award for Duo/Group of the Year and a 2013 Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media (“Safe & Sound” with Taylor Swift).
Though the Nashville outfit produced albums, sold tickets and won awards, the two performers surprised fans with an unexpected hiatus after the August 2013 release of their eponymous sophomore set.
I thought they sounded even better live......covering Smashing Pumpkins and Michael Jackson was a nice surprise.
The concert was fantastic - The music provided by the Civil Wars was well rehearsed, sound was perfect, and audience interaction was fun. It was a very enjoyable evening. Also, the warm-up band, The Staves, were absolutely wonderful - so much talent at that concert!
This band is awesome! Just them on stage with a guitar and a piano. No glitz and glamor just talent. And are they talented!!! Taylor Swift made a guest appearence and they put her to shame. True artists. Both so genuinely excited to play the Ryman too.
Hands down, an amazing concert. Been a long time since I've been to a show where the artist actually sounded BETTER than the CD
Such an amazing concert!! The Civi Wars are so extremely talented and appeal to such a wide variety of people. The fact that their two voices and a guitar can be just as, if not more intriguing than any other large-venue concert I've been to was very impressive. I was expecting it to be great beforehand, but it exceeded my expectations by far. Best concert I've been to!
These two bands made for the most enjoyable music experience I've had. The Staves had the audience completely awestruck after their first song, making them totally unforgettable and incredibly admirable. The Civil Wars, however, stole the stage during their performance. They talked to the audience and had great stage presence. You can see their passion for what they do through their performance. I would see The Civil Wars and/or The Staves again in a heartbeat.
The band itself was amazing, but actually having a seat would be advised.
The Civial Wars nailed it. Their vocal blend is perfect, their music is moving, and the show was intimate and engaging.
Wonderful show and venue. Their energy was amazing.
Excellent concert! Opening act even was excellent.
The Civil Wars bring a whole new level of eccentricity to the stage. The dynamics that emit from two voices and a guitar are pretty amazing. The opener (the staves) also brought an incredible amount of talent to the evening.
Saw The Civil Wars in Memphis six months ago, and now in St. Louis. They just keep getting better. Outstanding performance and great rapport with the audience! Noticed the crowd was an eclectic mix of ages from 30's to 70's.
I knew that the show was going to be a good one but, little did I know how inspiring it was. I'm a vocalist and write my own lyrics and to hear the harmonies I was so amazed! I can't wait to catch another show!! The opening act The Staves were fantastic too - what a great group a ladies!
The entire evening was amazing starting with the opening band. The Staves complimented the headliner perfectly. If any type of crowd could appreciate The Staves' style of music, it would be fans of The Civil Wars. Joy Williams and John Paul White have so much chemistry on stage, if I were either of their spouses I'd be so jealous. The band loves what they do and it shows. This is the second time I have seen The Civil Wars perform and I will keep coming back. There is no doubt that these bands are incredibly talented; their voices are showcased beautifully by only using one, at the most two, instruments. I would highly recommend both bands!
Great.... chill staff, very helpful.... excellent security personnel. Questions easily answered. The Civil Wars was great, the Pageant rocks!
I was enchanted by the performance. The CIvil Wars were perfection. The Staves were also great. I cannot stop thinking about how great the performance was, as well as the venue! It was my first time at The Pageant and I had a great experience.
What a great concert. The best concert I've ever been to. The Civil Wars are so talented.
The venue for The Civil War performance was great. The close setting allowed you to see and hear everything. They really played to the crowd and made you feel like a personal friend in the audience. The sound quality was amazing. I coud have stayed all night to listen to their harmony.
Opening brand was pretty stellar - The Staves. 3 girls with amazing voices...so in tune! The Civil Wars were awesome. Voices are so haunting. Can't wait for more albums!
This concert is a testament to artist with true vocal talent. Iris an amazing experience to see true talent.
