About

Soulful folk-pop duo The Civil Wars has made quite a mark on the genre in just a few short years, hitting the tour trail with the likes of Emmylou Harris and Adele. Singer/songwriters Joy Williams and John Paul White met at a Nashville songwriting session and got to work on an EP entitled “Poison & Wine” with producer Charlie Peacock, the title track of which appeared on the popular TV show “Grey’s Anatomy.”

“Barton Hollow,” The Civil Wars’ full-length debut, surfaced in early 2011 and landed at the top of Billboard’s Independent Albums and Folk Albums charts. It wasn’t long before the two musicians were performing on nighttime television talk shows on both sides of the pond, as well as tackling concerts at the Newport Folk Festival and the iconic Grand Ole Opry.

The Civil Wars also took home Grammy Awards for Best Folk Album and Best Country Duo/Group Performance for the title track, as well as an AMA Award for Duo/Group of the Year and a 2013 Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media (“Safe & Sound” with Taylor Swift).

Though the Nashville outfit produced albums, sold tickets and won awards, the two performers surprised fans with an unexpected hiatus after the August 2013 release of their eponymous sophomore set.

The Civil Wars are simply amazing!!!!

by Beck600rr on 2/6/12Culture Room - Ft Lauderdale

The Civil Wars are incredible, no doubt, but they are even better live!!!!! Every note of every song was flawless!! Only complaint is related to the venue, old, cruddy, typical dive type place with expensive drinks and standing room only. Had there been seats though we would have been there all night listening to The Civil Wars!

    Wars stole our hearts

by Folkhead on 2/6/12Culture Room - Ft Lauderdale

It began with a fantastic opening act: The Bellows, so passionate and powerful and divine, just a sheer pleasure to experience. Then came Joy & John, just magic on stage. The sold-out crowd was mesmerized from start to finish. Stone quiet as John & Joy stepped away from the mic so Joy could stretch her voice to depths unimaginable by most, and the strings accompanying her were played flawlessly and yet somehow gritty by John. Whenever a song reached its conclusion, the crowd roared, literally, not a simple cheer, but a loud, mind-melting shout of applause at the beauty everyone had just been privileged to behold. This was by far one of, if not THE, best live shows I have ever had the honor of attending. If you enjoy live music, The Civil Wars are a MUST.

One of the best concerts I have ever been to!

by wiskedaway on 2/6/12Culture Room - Ft Lauderdale

So incredible. Joy and Jon Paul are so simply adorable. Their dynamic musically and conversationally is impeccable. I got to meet them after the show and they were such nice people and smiley and thankful that we came out to see them. All in all, I would definitely go see them a second time in the near future.

The civil wars are new superstars

by Moxley on 2/4/12Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

This was perhaps the best concert that I have ever attended. A true sign of greatness is when a group is better live than in the studio and they were excellent. They are very entertaining and I can't wait to see them again.

by ButterflyChaser on 2/3/12Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach outside Jacksonville

I absolutely loved the concert for The Civil Wars!!! I would see them again and highly recommend them to anyone. Their music is fresh and compelling and the chemistry of Joy Williams and John Paul White together is just plain fun. I discovered them by pure accident and was lucky enough to catch them passing through Florida.

Civil Wars @ Ponte Vedra Concert Hall

by GaryfromJax on 2/3/12Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

Civil Wars were great. Vocals were spot on. What you hear on their recordings is exactly what you hear live. No studio magic needed for their vocals. Our first time at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. It's a great small venue. I will be on the look out for upcoming events to attend there.

    Great Performance

by Stagejumper on 1/20/12Ryman - Nashville

The Civil Wars had a great sound. These two performers are a great combination on stage. It was so nice to see The Civil Wars have the ability to perform so close to the high level of talent, entertainment ability and stage presence as that of Taylor Swift. The Civil War's emotional vocal abilities are definitely worth checking out live.

    Fabulous live act

by borahgrace on 1/20/12Liberty Hall - Lawrence

The Civil Wars are a fantastic duo with beautiful voices, impressive harmonies, and minimalist guitar and piano playing which all makes for a great show. Liberty Hall was a perfect setting for them with its intimate setting. See this band if you have the opportunity.

    Unforgettable as always

by kflakes on 1/19/12Liberty Hall - Lawrence

This is the second time I've seen the Civil Wars in concert and just like last time their entire show was perfection. The raw emotion shown through their songs is incredible. In between sets (and sometimes during) they are very humorous and share moments from their day before the show. Love the bands they get to open for them also. I would recommend following them on Twitter as well!

Fabulous, except for Joy's crazy hands.

    by anbksu09 on 1/19/12Liberty Hall - Lawrence

The Civil Wars are a phenomenal duo. Their voices blend together perfectly in notes that sound ethereal. However, I found that I could not look at Joy Williams because she had her hands fluttering and floating around more than Napoleon Dynamite doing sign language. It was overly dramatic and distracted from her nearly flawless voice. That being said, if you have a chance to see this group, go, but be prepared to avert your eyes from the crazy hands.
