About

The Chieftains on Tour

The Chieftains bring a long legacy of traditional Irish music along with them every time they take the stage. Leader and multi-instrumentalist Paddy Moloney has been on board since the band began their journey back in 1962, and he continues to stoke the flame of Celtic folk for audiences all over the world. Some of the comparatively "new boys" in the band have been on board since the '70s. Bringing instruments like fiddle, bodhran, pipes, harp, flute and pennywhistle into play, The Chieftains don't go in for any sort of flash or spectacle, but they invest each performance with so much energy, it's clear that passion and fun are top priorities. Chieftains shows feature ripping instrumental tunes, tear-jerking ballads, and sometimes step dancers who come to the front of the stage and get the crowd stirred up with their fancy footwork.

The Chieftains in Concert

The Chieftains are known all over the planet as the absolute rulers of the realm when it comes to Irish folk music. Their story started in 1962 when Paddy Moloney put the group together in Dublin along with Sean Potts and Michael Tubridy. Two years later The Chieftains released their first, self-titled album, and though the band started earning attention in the '60s, it wasn't until the following decade that they really exploded on an international level, partly buoyed by their score for the 1975 Stanley Kubrick–directed movie Barry Lyndon. Ever since then, the band has gone from strength to strength, winning armloads of Grammys and other honors along the way. While members have come and gone over the years, the mission of The Chieftains — to be ambassadors of traditional Irish music — has remained consistent, even when they've collaborated with icons the likes of Van Morrison, Sting and Sinead O'Connor.

    Chieftains were brilliant!

by StonesRiver on 3/18/10Town Hall - New York

It doesn't get any better than this. The Chieftains put on a great show demonstrating not only their muscial skill as instrumentalists and singers, but their amazing capacity to mix Irish music with other styles and themes. The "San Patricio" Tour does that. There were great dancers, displaying traditional Irish dance and the Canadian step dance equivalent. Great mix of old Chieftains favorites and new work. They enage the audience from the first note and never loose their grip. Taking advantage of St. Patrick's Day in NYC to engage pipe bands and weave them into the mix was very powerful and entertaining. This performance will endure in my memory, it is not to be forgotten.

    The Chieftains at Town Hall

by pitzie on 3/18/10Town Hall - New York

Absolutely the greatest Irish music show I have seen in years. My daughter, Alanna, aged 15 years, enjoyed herself enormously. She can't wait until next year.

    The Chieftains are tops

by ponch413 on 3/18/10Lowell Memorial Auditorium - Lowell

The whole show just got better and better as the night progressed. I knew I would love the show but it even exceeded my expectations. The extra acts of the step dancers and the bagpipes made the show as well. They were very funny, entertaining and brillient.

    change of start time

by gs114 on 3/18/10Town Hall - New York

The Chieftains were great, but someone decided to change the original start time from 8:00 PM to 7:30 PM. I was in my seat at 7:20 and the show finally started at 7:50 PM and then people stumbled to their seats for the next 15 minutes in the dark. All pretty distracting. It really doesn't matter what time a show starts - just make up your mind and stick to it.

The Cheiftans: Almost 50 and Still Awesome!

by BronxBee on 3/18/10Town Hall - New York

the Cheiftans as a core group have been together for 49 years, and they still manage to be fresh, constantly exploring new themes and ideas. the Cheiftans are great at bring music together as a whole, as evidenced by their album The Long Black Veil, which had them working with Sting, The Rolling Stones and Van Morrison among others. this time, it's a little known piece of history that has them updating their repetoire. their tribute to the San Patricio Brigade -- a group of Irish Immigrants who fought on the Mexican side during the 1848 Mexican/American war -- has given them new lively arrangements, incorporating spanish, mexican and irish music in a way not done before to my knowledge. it gave a very interesting scope and breadth to the evening's performance.

    Outstanding

by Longstreet on 3/14/10Lowell Memorial Auditorium - Lowell

This is our fourth time to hear The Chieftains and each time they get better. This performance was the best yet. We have several of their CD's and have enjoyed their work for years. If you have a chance to hear them in person, please go you will receive your moneys worth and more. All of the entertainers with them were super. We always have liked what The Chieftains do to have some local talent on the stage with them. That is simply great.

    Chieftains were AMAZING

by Treason on 3/13/10Lowell Memorial Auditorium - Lowell

The show was simply amazing! The whole audience was foot stomping and clapping in rhythm throughout the entire show. Band leader, Paddy Maloney, kept the audience highly motivated not only with his music, but with his quick witted sense of humor throughout the performance. The addition of the step dancers and bagpipers brought the house down. The whole audience was involved especially when the dancers came out and interacted with the audience and made them part of the show when bringing them up onto the stage. This is a MUST SEE!

    Chieftains

by Demon01876 on 3/13/10Lowell Memorial Auditorium - Lowell

Awesome....First time seeing them, loved every minute of it. They are they most unpretencious band ever, 48 years now. Vistors and guests were playing, singing, dancing and then came the Marching Bagpipe band. Paddy Maloney introduced every song and the artists that were with them. The hall was made for music, very comfortable and the workers were very friendly. We got lucky with street parking a block away. I'm going to see them whenever they come to town from now on.

    The Chieftains

by SCHA03 on 3/12/10Lowell Memorial Auditorium - Lowell

This was such a wonderful show! My first Chieftain's concert and my first concert at L.M.A. It was so nice to see the band enjoy entertaining us. My only disappointment was the backlighting....I could not see the musician's faces at all...and I had been told there wasn't a bad seat in the house! Not seeing the performers you pay to see was the only downfall....overall the concert was wonderful and I look forward to attending again.

Love the show, HATE the venue.

by WBSobe on 3/12/10Lowell Memorial Auditorium - Lowell

I have seen the Chieftains in concert for 7 years straight now. Altough the concert follows a similar format each year it is still amazing concert. The Chieftains are truly gifted musicians. Those who think that they are only going to hear Irish music are treated to a mutli-cultural and historic night of folk music. When you hear the Chieftains in concert it is no wonder that some of the biggest names in music have collaberated with them (i.e. Rolling Stone, Sting, Sinead O'Connor, Van Morrison). Of the past 7 years I have seen them in concert 6 of those years the concert was held at Symphony Hall in Boston. This is the perfect location for the quality of music the Chieftains play. The accoustics in Symphony Hall are amazing, actually beyond amazing. Having the concert this year at the Lowell Auditorium was a major disappointment. Although the building is nice and appears to have been recently restored. The accoustics at Lowell Auditorium fail in comparison to Symphony Hall. I am not sure as to why the change of venue this year. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, bring the Chieftains back to Boston, home of the Irish and back to the beautiful Symphony Hall.

    Classic show!

by mikechris on 3/12/10Lowell Memorial Auditorium - Lowell

No matter what cast of players, singers and dancers that Paddy Maloney assembles, you can be assured that The Chieftains will deliver a first class show. Very enjoyable from start to finish. The show was lively, moving, inspiring and professional. Don't miss The Chieftains if they're coming to your town.

    The Chieftains were awesome

by ChristyMooreFan on 3/12/10Lowell Memorial Auditorium - Lowell

I must admit that I was a little apprehensive that there would be too much instrumental songs but the depth and breath of the musical variation was simply excellent!
