The Brian Setzer Orchestra, Christmas show is a yearly tradition at my house. This marks the 6th time we’ve seen this show, and we’re already anticipating next year’s show. Although it’s billed a “Christmas Show” there are plenty of “non-Christmas” good times as well. For an 8-year trombone player, like myself (5th grade throughout 12th) I always love to see a concert where the “band kids” get to take front stage. Yes, Brian lets his trumpet, woodwind and of course, trombone players “rock the house” with a swing sound that I even think my Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman loving father would have appreciated.
Of course, Brian pays homage to the tunes that put him on MTV back in the days with the Stray Cats standards, STRAY CAT STRUT and ROCK THIS TOWN. Even though I’m a former horn blower, my favorite part of the show is the rockabilly set where the horn blowers get to rest their lips, and Brian rock’s the place with his drummer, bass player, and piano player which is a bit of show within itself. Of course, Brian Setzer could be playing 70’s disco tunes for all I care. He is such a master of the guitar, that a wannabe guitar player like myself can just set in awe thinking, “How does he do that?”
There’s plenty of Christmas tunes to be heard though. My favorite being ANGELS WE HAVE HEARD ON HIGH. At the end of the show, Brian hung around to sign a few things for the devoted fans that rushed the stage. Such things included a Gretsch guitar and an old Stray Cats 8 track. Yes, devoted fans. Being a devoted fan myself, I’ll be there again next year. This is the only show that I can say rivals the Trans-Siberian Orchestra to heighten my Christmas spirit. Rock on Mr. Setzer!
