About

Critically Acclaimed Ensemble The Bad Plus are the ultimate originals. A democratic unit with a clear vision and a refusal to conform to convention. For the past two decades they have played with spirit and adventure, made their own rules and done so with a bold sense of creativity and intent. Avoiding easy categorization, The Bad Plus has won critical acclaim and a legion of fans worldwide with their unique sound and flair for live performance.

Now in their 21st year, The Bad Plus continues to push boundaries as founding members Reid Anderson (Composer & Bass) and Dave King (Drums) embark on a new piano-less incarnation of the band with Ben Monder (Guitar) and Chris Speed (Tenor Saxophone) – instigating a new wave of excitement and anticipation within the band that is re-energizing their sound and inspiration. The Bad Plus have constantly searched to bridge genres and techniques while exploring the infinite possibilities of exceptional musicians working in perfect sync.

This is The Bad Plus in their most creative and expressive form. This is The Bad Plus now.

Founding Member, Composer & Bassist Reid Anderson has distinguished himself among the worlds finest jazz musicians. “Anderson’s compositions are ingenious…all exemplify a stylistic refinement that is simply thrilling," raves ALL ABOUT JAZZ.

Founding Member & Drummer Dave King is one of the most celebrated drummers in modern jazz. His contributions to the Minneapolis and New York jazz scenes are incalculable, and his imagination and boundless enthusiasm behind (and around) the drum set are singular and stunning. King has recorded and/or performed with Bill Frisell, Joshua Redman, Jeff Beck, Tim Berne, Hank Roberts, Joe Lovano, Jason Moran, and many others.

    The Bad Plus

by DaveLK1 on 9/28/10Folly Theater - Kansas City

This show was amazing. The sound was great, the atmosphere was great and the band was in top form. The songs from the new album, Never Stop, were played improvisationally, yet when I purchased an album after the show and listened I instantly recognized them all. It was a treat to hear "Big Eater", "Flim"(Richard D. James) and "Physical Cities", all songs that my band and I discussed we would love to hear at the show. No matter what type of music you are into, you should do whatever it takes to see this band!

The Bad Plus -- best show yet

by Jaugarhead on 9/20/10Berklee Performance Center - Boston

This was my fourth time seeing The Bad Plus and it was easily the best show. As performers the are together and top flight but the difference maker is the new songs. The new originals were some of their best compositions to date. It seemed as though they were able to write for the live performance instead of the studio sterility, so the energy was top notch.

The Bad Plus has been at the top of my listening list for almost as long as they have been in existence (10 years!) They are supremely talented as individuals and constantly innovative as a trio. Incredible performance!

Phenomenal music-making. Brilliantly virtuosic and authentic grab-yer-guts energy. "Never Stop" is apt. If America honored its best, The Bad Plus would be a national treasure.
