THE B-52S IN CONCERT:

Since forming in 1976, The B-52s have always stood out for their thrift-store chic style and ability to craft catchy, retro-inspired hits. Over the years they might have let their beehives down, but every-thing else about the band is still as tight as it was 30 years ago. Their call-and-response choruses always get fans singing along, and their fun and funky grooves will have you dancing right along with the band. The B-52s are taking their party atmosphere to select cities across the U.S. on their 2015 tour, bringing all their cool style and flamboyant fun to a town near you.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Named after a particular type of beehive hairdo, The B-52s rocketed out of Athens, Georgia in the late ’70s. Starting with their smash hit “Rock Lobster”, the band developed a reputation for campy fun and catchy melodies that carried over to other favorites like “Planet Claire” and “Private Idaho”. By the end of the decade, the band achieved a major mainstream radio breakthrough with the hits “Love Shack” and “Roam”. The band stayed relevant into the ’90s, appearing in The Flintstones live action movie (as “The BC-52’s”) and performing the theme song from the Nickelodeon cartoon Rocko’s Modern Life. Almost 40 years later, this zany garage band is still having a blast -- and still sounds like a blast from the past.

  • The Best Live Band Ever!

by rockbird10 on 8/21/09DTE Energy Music Theatre - ClarkstonRating: 5 out of 5

When it comes to non-theatrical concerts, The B-52's are the greatest live band ever! I've seen every one of their shows in the Detroit area since 1983 and they have never disappointed. From the minute the music starts the audience is on their feet and they never sit down. The B-52's played several songs off their latest 2008 LP, "Funplex", but did not skimp on their classic material whatsoever! The group is tighter than ever and they seem to have as much fun on stage as the audience. If you've never seen The B-52's do not hesitate to catch them next time around! You will be hit with a double Whammy of fun!

Both the music and the crowd were entertaining, both had aged but in a dignified matter

  • Great Concert!

by Betseygirl on 8/21/09DTE Energy Music Theatre - ClarkstonRating: 5 out of 5

The B52's put on a great show, this was the 2nd time I saw them perform live. There wasn't alot of people there probably due to the economy, but the crowd was pumped and people were dancing from beginning to end. I would go see them again!

  • Party gone outta bounds

Once again, the B-52s delivered high-energy fun. You have to laugh and dance to experience the concert at its best. Wish the show was a bit longer, but enjoyed it none the less.

If your voice in not gone when you leave this show, somethings wrong. With laughing, singing and cheering at the top of your lungs, Cindy, Keith, Fred and Kate still show, THIS is how it's done. Always a great preformance. As long as they keep touring, I'll keep going. Thanks guys. And remember: "Don't take pills!!!"

  • B52s still kickin'

by a2miguy on 8/21/09DTE Energy Music Theatre - ClarkstonRating: 4 out of 5

I first became a B52s fan in the early '80s. I am amazed that the group still sounds this awesome for as long as they've been around. I heard them at Pine Knob (it'll always be Pine Knob as far as I'm concerned!) about 15 years ago. My only complaint is the same complaint I had back then..... they didn't play long enough!! But they are still the same B52s, and they rocked. I can think of at least a dozen songs I wanted to hear, but oh well. Can't have everything. They put on one helluva fun show. I'd go again in a hearbeat.

  • Great value

by Gingy14 on 8/21/09DTE Energy Music Theatre - ClarkstonRating: 3 out of 5

I saw the B-52's nine years ago (2000), and there's no denying they're not as tight as they were back then. That being said, I paid $32.50 each for a pair of 6th row tickets, which made for a very entertaining and memorable night. I was very surprised that the venue (DTE Energy Music Theater) was barely half full! I expect the B-52's to be playing smaller venues from here on in. Fans that have never seen the group before should also be forewarned that they do a very short show. This year's total running time was 1 hour and 15 minutes.

  • B-52s

by ChetSavage on 8/21/09DTE Energy Music Theatre - ClarkstonRating: 4 out of 5

We got to the 7:30 show at 7:00 and there were only a few hundred people at DTE Energy Music Theatre (FKA Pine Knob). The crowd filed in gradually but ultimatley only filled about 1/3 of the available seating area on the lawn and pavilion. I felt bad for the band. I have been listening to the B-52's since Rock Lobster came out and have always wanted to see them live. Fred Schneider - weird but great. Same voice from 30 years ago. Seemed a bit bored and tired. Kate Pierson - awesome. Keith Strickland - great, like he hasn't aged a day. Cindy Wilson - what's up with her? Did she lose her voice on "Roam"? Seemed a bit dazed & confused. All-in-all, a good show. Wish I saw them 10-20 years ago.

  • Funplex show was awesome

by Trouttime on 8/21/09DTE Energy Music Theatre - ClarkstonRating: 5 out of 5

The New Collisions were a good warm up band, energetic and fun. Now the B52's well what can you say after all these years they still have it. Not only were they energetic and funny, they looked great and sounded even better. They played a nice variety of songs including some of their greatest hits and were true to form and sound. All around an excellent concert, I hope they come back!

  • B-52's Rocked Detroit

I was so excited to see this concert and it fulfilled my expectations. So much energy and great place to see them play. Thanks!

  • Big American Fun

by Stevil on 8/21/09DTE Energy Music Theatre - ClarkstonRating: 4 out of 5

The B-52's played all their hits. Songs I had forgotten about, but was oh so delighted to hear again, like Quiche Lorraine and Planet Claire. Their songs sounded fresh and current. Soaring vocals from Cindy and Kate - beautiful! Sadly about halfway through the show Cindy's voice started going out, but she stuck to it the best she could. My wife and I took our 8-year old daughter to her first big outdoor concert and even she had fun! Highly enjoyable - lots of dancing and good times for everyone! Shows moral message: Don't use pills!

  • The B-52's

by julieandjeff on 8/21/09DTE Energy Music Theatre - ClarkstonRating: 2 out of 5

So old they could barely dance - it was like watching my parents perform - slow and akward. Both female singers were off key at times, however, Fred, the male singer was usually on key and the most energetic of the group. It was disappointing to see this group perform at the level and capacity they did compared to the mid 80's at the height of thier popularity. Despite my disappointment, it was fun to stand and dance to the music through the one-hour concert, as most of the audience did.

  • B52s, Better than ever!

by channelz2007 on 8/21/09DTE Energy Music Theatre - ClarkstonRating: 5 out of 5

Everyone in the group looked better than ever and had all the energy expected from the number one party band!

  • B-52s can still throw a party

by DebF on 8/21/09DTE Energy Music Theatre - ClarkstonRating: 4 out of 5

So it's been a while since Rock Lobster hit the scene, but the B-52s brought all the old favorites and some newer stuff to life last night. Funplex was mixed in with Private Idaho and Roam, and the lawn crowd was rocking. The only complaint I have is that they did not come back for a second encore. Can't get enough of a good thing, I guess. The B-52s hit the big-time in 1979, so if they can still bring it in 2009 you gotta give credit where credit is due!
