  • They are aging well like a fine wine.

by Shortsail on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

I have to admit that I had my doubts going into this concert. I had seen Greg Allman solo just a year ago and his voice was shot, but this concert was great. Greg's voice was in fine form and his guitar players, Warren Hayes and Derek Trucks are the best pair of leads since Duane and Dickey played together. I did miss not hearing Midnight Rider, but other than that it was great fun. I must admit I am not a big jam band kind of guy so extended jams like WSP are not my thing (yes including Mountain Jam) but they were good and I would like to see them again in a smaller venue. There vocal mix was muddy and some of the their music was down righ boring.

by Freakboy on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen the Allman Brothers Band, 12 times. (Including this show) Both bands were (in one word)....AWESOME! I can't wait to see what ABB will do for their 41st year!! This is the second time I've seen WSP, and I will most assuredly see them again in the future!

  • The Allman Brothers Band were on fire

by NorthernVAsoulshine on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

This was the best ABB show I have seen. Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks were simply amazing.

  • The Allman Bros. and friends were tight!!!!!

    by Bird52 on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

WP was OK but the ABB was great! Besides the usual kick*** band members, they had Derek Trucks wife, Susan Tedeski, play guitar with them and also solo on a Bob Dylan song. Local sax player, Ray Hollaway, jammed with the band too. Lead guitar player for WP sat in on a couple songs too. Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks wailed on their guitars! I'm definitly buying the CD for this show!!!

  • Allman Brothers, worth it!!!

by Fuzzbox on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

I must admit, I loathe DC traffic heading into Maryland during rush hour, but I was willing to make the sacrifice to attend my first Allman Brothers show. We received a healthy dose of Widespread Panic for two hours before they came on which was a nice bonus. The Allman Brothers sounded very solid musically and delivered the goods. The guitars were excellent as was Greg Allman's voice surprisingly. I have to admit I missed the presence of Dickey Betts. His voice, songs, and bright guitar playing bring a definite vibe to that band. They seemed to come off a bit darker to me than I expected. Nonetheless, I consider it money well spent. It was great to see one of America's great rock 'n roll bands.

  • Allman Bros & Widespread Panic - Still kicking!

    by Rondob4 on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

I'm not a fan of Widespread Panic - I know they have a large, loyal following ala The Dead (another band that doesn't thrill me) and this was the first time I saw them. That said, I had no expectations. Musically, they are extremely talented. The lead singer, John Bell, has a vocal range of about one octave and looks like a Kris Kristoferson body double circa 1999. Lead guitarist Jimmy Herring can be smoking fast, but it seemed like he played the same ten licks over and over when soloing. In short, he seemed bored. The band also stumbled a couple of times, each when the keyboards (JoJo Hermann) stumped them with a simultaneous key and time change. It sounded like a an elephant trying to mate with a hummingbird. The Allman Bros, however, took command. Gregg's unique voice is unmatched in blues. Period. He is still at the top of his game. Warren Haynes can rip the guitar, but Derek Trucks was king of the show. His fingerstyle playing is uncommon - off the top of my head I can only think of Lindsay Buckingham who is equally as great. Derek kicked butt!

  • Still Amazing After All These Years

by Pianella on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

What a great concert! I have seen the ABB many times and this concert managed to make the same old wonderful songs seem fresh and new. Warren and Derek were fantastic as usual and the addition of Susan Tedeshi was a wonderful surprise. It was a truly special moment when everyone was on stage together. After battling the traffic, etc., I was thinking, maybe I am getting too old for this......... SO glad I didn't miss this one!

  • Awesome night

by Tippster on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

Herring was on fire, Bell's and Gregg's voices were solid, and Derek Trucks was an alien. Even Warren's guitar playing smoothed out toward the end.

  • 40 Years for a Reason!

by daBIGmf on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I have seen the ABB every year since this tour started in 2003. They keep getting better! We are never disappointed. This year was special because of the guest perfomers. Ron Holloway is always a treat. I had never seen Susan T live but will be getting some of her music later today and check her out live when she is in town. Nice tribute to a fallen sister, Mary Travers with Don't Think Twice. The trilbute to Duane was really nice, too. Greg is singing strong, Jaimoe and Butch are amazing, they never miss a beat and kick a all the way. Warren and Derek are, well words fail me. They channel so much energy through their playing I get high and I don' drink or smoke. Oteil and Marc round out that awesome beat section superbly. Oteil is one of the best bassists I have ever heard. I would classify him as the Unsung Hero of the band. I could go on for pages. As long as they keep touring we will be there!

We missed Widespread Panic due to the tailgate party in the parking lot. Fortunately, the party was suspended so we could experience the ABB at its finest. The front line of the band (Gregg, Warren and Derek) were exceptional. Gregg's vocals were strong! The rythm section (Oteil, Jaimoe, Mark and Butch) provided a flawless bottom end and rolled thru Merriweather like a freight train.

  • Solid as ever

    by Nickname99 on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

I've seen ABB well over 30 times and they continue to be solid and tight and it is plainly obvious the band members so enjoy playing together - smiles all night. Gregg sounded better last night (stronger) than he has at any of the 3 times I've seen ABB since Gregg recovered from Hep C. Fantastic set - I haven't been fortunate enough to hear Whipping Post in a few years and it was a treat to hear it for the encore.

I've been an ABB fan since they were the house band at Fillmore East and have never been disappointed or dissatisfied with a show of theirs' until this one. The opener was terrible and it seemed like ABB was trying to imitate them. Were they exhausted from the trip out here??? As my cousin who attended with me said, "I think we just saw the All Done Bros. Band". In addition, the audience was the most rude I've ever seen. Oh, maybe they just kept getting up, walking around and getting more beer because the shaow was so bad. I will give them another shot.

  • Allman Brothers Band NEVER disappoints!!!

They were awesome, as always! I've been seeing them for years now and they NEVER disappoint... NEVER!!!! And now I even like that Widespread Panic, after seeing them live.
