  • ABB rockin' Merriweather

by gbring on 10/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

I've scene the allman brothers 44 times and this show was another great show. Out of all of the times I've scene them Susan Tedeschi has never came on stage until tonight. That was the highlight of the night. Southbound should have been great but Susan took Dereks spot and she didn't know the song. They passed through each person 1 time only. With Derek it would have gone back and forth a few more times. Widespread is an acquired taste and the star of the band is Jimmy Herring. He can play regardless of what band he is with.

  • Allman Bros. didn't disapoint

    by ladyland54 on 10/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

I thought it was great. I've listened to them since the beginning. Had a great time at Merriweather, my first time at that venue. I've seen Derick on TV with Clapton and was impressed with his talent. Thanks Guys for a great time. It was a birthday present to my husband. He saw them in 1971 at Va. Beach Dome all original members then. Glad the show was dedicated to Dwayne.

  • Southern rock at it's best!!

    by kevlar13 on 10/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

I have never seen WSP open for anyone, but when you tour with a giant like the Allman Brothers Band, sometimes you must share the spotlight. This was by far one of the best combinations known to man. The only disappointment was the fact that Merriweather did not let them play all night. I can only hope to see each of them several more times before they pull down the final curtain.

  • Jamband for a reason

by Biscuits on 10/8/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

Allmans played a great show..lots of folks sitting in..Susan Tedeski , most of Widespread Panic... Ron Holloway ripped up Southbound on the sax alongside of Jimmy Herring shreading on guitar ..Jimmy really smoked on the Widespread set ..Gov't Mule's Danny Louis played keys most of the Allman's set..Dr John's "Walk on Guilded Splinters" got the ABB treatment ..Stand Back was particularly Hot..Greg played Melissa on the acoustic with the rest of the band electric,,they worked Dazed and Confused into a Mt Jam to close the set..Whippin Post encore

  • Allman Brothers Rocked!!

by Faerygirl on 10/8/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

Widespread was awesome! Love John Bell's voice. Allman Brothers rocked!! Warren is a god and Derek Trucks is phenomenal!! The crowd was really into it and everyone was dancing and having a great time. I'm not sure who Susan Tededski (?) is but she was great too. They were full of energy!!

  • Allman show excellent, Derek Trucks soared

by ElectricMoose on 10/8/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

I've been an ABB fan from the 1st album in '69. The first time I experienced them live was in '71 at the Baltimore Civic Center, during the Eat a Peach tour. Duane had died and Barry was still alive. I was 18 and had never heard anything like it. I've seen some magical shows at Merriweather, Joni Mitchell, during the Miles of Aisles tour comes to mind. This Allman show was magic. The production and set list transported you to the '70's, you felt Duane and Barry and Dickie's presence and then you were subtly brought back to the future. Derek Trucks is the future...Warren Haynes is a VERY solid bluesman, but Derrek is on another planet. Every time Derrek took a solo, this music went further than I have ever experienced live with ABB...but I never had the chance to see Duane. The overall sound was very good, I thought that the lighting and effects were thoughtful and really supported the band and the tribute to a brother... Widespread Panic is an excellent opening act for this tour. They help make you feel the days of the Dead and the Band and the Allmans sharing a stage. If you've never seen the ABB. Go.

  • What other concerts?

by DeadPalace on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

Who is best collection of 3 guitarists on stage at one time (modern era)? Answer: Warren Haynes (ABB), Derek Trucks (ABB)and Jimmy Herring (WSP) as they ripped all show and did collaborative efforts all night at MerriWx. Man ...hands down. As I see more and more concerts, I always feel that one night that night was the best show I've ever seen, etc. Well once again.........here i go........BEST JAM BAND for the LONGEST IN YOUR FACE GUITARS and DRUMS solos ...has to be THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND. Freakin tore it up, as did Widespread <<- very much a power rock band with southern vocals, if I had to give them a label. But ABB had all genres this night. DEEP THICK MUDDY BLUES SOLOS ! MELT YOU FACE OFF SLIDE GUITAR solos, dueling slide solos between WH & DT, as if their FINGERS WERE FALLING OFF. All around a power night of ....well, "do you think they can top that last song?" and then to do just that for every song. Big and sick night love the Allmans for ever !! Oh ya their shroom wall murels and light show was sick too. Opened the stage and made an absent entrance before a single note had started by displaying a murel and words that read "DEDICATED TO A BROTHER", then referenced a slide show of photos of Duane Allman from years past. Really cool enrtrance I thought ! SLAB

awesome, great jams, awesome venue, couldnt have asked for anything more!

  • ABB was great, WSP slow to start

    by jgp1313 on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

The ABB was best I have seen them since I saw Duane at the last show he played at the Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh on Oct 1971. WSP, and I hate to say it as I am a diehard WSP fan, weren't up to par. The last 3 songs saved the show for them along with Warren Hayes. Don't like Jimmy Herring. He doesn't fit the band ,George McConnel was more in tune with the band on the stage, off the stage may have been a different matter.

  • The Allman Brothers and Panic were awsome!!!!!!!

    by Shelly10 on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

These bands were great, some of the best guitarists I've seen in a long time.It was a nice surprise to see Susan Tedeschi. Merriweather Post Pavilion was a blast! It's the best concert site I've ever been to. It was a night to remember! I hope to see them there again next year!!!!!!

  • Allmans really rocked!

by deadheadman on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

Mr Warren Haynes? Whoa! Derek Trucks? Amazing! This was a night for guitar lovers . . . no question about it. More guitar? How about Susan Tedeschi too? Widespread Panic opened with a great 90 min (or so) set -- also fantastic licks, with Warren sitting in a couple of numbers. He is truly a guitar god! Hardest working guitarist in the known universe! Greg Allman was in great voice . . . just a really special rockin' night, with of course some old favs thrown in -- Melissa, Mountain Jam, Southbound and a truly truly awesome encore finale - a kick-ass version of Whipping Post, with a little bit of everything thrown in (was there Zep in there? I was laboring under a slightly altered consciousness to actually remember when I heard that) Great show -- fantastic Rock & Roll! keep on rockin' Allman Brothers!

  • The Brothers and Panic did not disappoint.

by mshalfstep on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

Been a while since I have seen the Allman's, they haven't missed a beat. Derek Trucks lived up to his namesakes and Warren was Warren. Good selection of songs. Kind of a long time to set up between bands though. Panic set a good tone for the evening and the Allman's capped it off. Bravo.

  • A smokin' show

by funkyfitter on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

From the opening riffs of Trouble No More until the last fading note of Whipping Post, The Allman Brothers Band blew the roof off of Merriweather Post Pavillion. Stellar musicianship and overall band tightness combined for what may well turn out to be the best show of the year. Ron Halloway, on sax and Danny Lewis, on piano sat in with the band on many of the songs giving the music a wonderful vibe, as they know the tunes and tendancies as well as any guests that grace the stage with this fabulous band. If you were there, you know what a magic night it was. If not, I recommend that you get out to see them soon. THEY ARE THE BEST BAND OUT THERE ! LONG LIVE THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND !

  • magnificent: except for her!

by WhitePlainsTony on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

Allman Brother music rages! even the slow blues songs are heavy. Although the audience cheered for Mrs. Trucks, you could tell it was the kind of cheering an underdog gets for putting up a valiant effort. I wouldn't mind if she warmed up for The Allman Brothers; she certain;y is that good. But nobody can deny that when she comes out to sing the only song she ever sings, its like the show has been stopped for her and when she finishes, the show has to be restarted. This was not the case when the lead singer from Widespread panic joined them. When he joined the band, the intensity of the music remained high.

  • Solid

    by Rossboy777 on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

Mostly a very good set by Panic. Allmans started strong and kind of lost momentum when all the guests parade across the stage.

  • Allman Brothers Band at Merriweather Post - Great

by AJMetairie on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

It doesn't matter that this year celebrates 40 years of the Allman Brothers Band - they are a musically tight group with a strong history of the ABB family and the introduction of new talent. Danny Louis plays some groovy keyboards. Gregg, Jaimoe and Butch still produce with the soul and energy of 40 years together with the compliment of Marc on percussion. Oteil (with the spirit of Berry Oakley) carries the bass line for all songs, setting up Warren and Derek - insane guitarists who make your face melt! My first ABB concert was in 1972 at City Park in New Orleans. Last night, 37+ years later, was as enjoyable as that first concert! The Road Goes On Forever!

  • Allman Brothers still have it!

    by Jackie38 on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

Sounded great! 40 years has not changed the awesome sound of this classic southern rock band. So glad we still get to enjoy them and hope they keep on for many years to come.

  • Allman Brothers were alright

by Rubylou on 10/7/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

I was a little disappointed, something was missing. It seemed more like the Derek Trucks show. My friend said she liked Widespread Panic's show more than Allman Brothers. I think we were expecting to hear some of the songs that we sing along to that come on the radio. If you're into slide guitar than this was the show for you! Overall we liked it alot, especially when they broke into Dazed and Confused. That was awsome. Would have loved to hear Ramblin Man, Midnight Rider and Blue Sky but it was a great show anyway.
