The Allman Betts Band on Tour
When Devon Allman and Duane Betts come together to carry the torch that their fathers — Gregg and Dickey, respectively — bore for so many years, they do it their own way. Sure, they bring classic Allman Brothers Band tunes like "Ain't Wastin' Time No More," "Jessica," "Midnight Rider" and "Blue Sky" to the stage with a sound and spirit that will make their fathers' fans misty. But this is no tribute act. In addition to breathing new life into the old material, they offer up their own tunes, influenced by old-school Southern rock but bearing an undeniably original feel. And along the way they take songs by other artists, from John Lee Hooker to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and put their own roots-rocking stamp on them. Between Devon's pipes and Duane's guitar, old spirits are conjured in an Allman Betts Band concert, but new fires are stoked as well.
The Allman Betts Band in Concert
When Gregg Allman passed away in 2017, the loss ended any chance for the Allman Brothers Band to ever take the stage again. But two men found a way to move the spirit of the ABB into a new era. These musicians are an undeniable part of the band's legacy even though they were never actually members of the band. Gregg's son Devon Allman joined forces with Duane Betts, son of legendary Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dickey Betts, to form The Allman Betts Band. Devon's soulful voice and Duane's fiery guitar work represent the next chapter in a Southern rock story that started with their parents back in Georgia in the late 1960s. There's even a third Allman Brothers Band offspring in the Allman Betts Band — Berry Oakley Jr., whose dad was the former's founding bassist. Those who mourn the Allman Brothers Band will find cause to rejoice in The Allman Betts Band, as not just a rekindling of old memories but a powerful path forward.
Dudes can play some incredible guitar! You can see they love playing and performing. Great show.
The best sounding band was the opening act. After that the guitar mustic was far too loud. Vocals were garbled.
They blew me away with their tight harmonies and playing. I have always been into the Southern Rock genre and these guys reminded why I love it so much. I saw them at TCU Ampitheater in Indianapolis with Blackberry Smoke. For me and my tastes I would have liked to see the order reversed although Smoke was excellent. It was some of the best guitar playing I have seen in a long time. I will see them again and am spreading the word that these guys have what it takes to give a performance that you will think about long after it is over. Thank you boys for a great night in late September.
Admittedly my expectations were jaded since I had seen the Allman Brothers Band a couple of times in the early 70’s when I was a teenager. A friend of mine invited me and I reluctantly went; good thing that I did. The band was excellent and the guitar playing was exceptional, especially that of Johnny Stachela. I would rank his skills with any of the greats and I’ve seen Cream, LedZeppelin, Johnny Winter, Red Hot Chili Peppers( great lead guitarist), Black Crowes, Buck Dharma, Black Sabbath, Rory Gallagher, Jeff Beck, Robin Trower…..a lot more. If you like a bunch of guys playing southern rock and blues….see them! As an added must see… Marc Ford ….plays before and with these guys and after my glowing review of Stachela, here is the former lead guitarist of Black Crowes and it’s a toss up which of these guys has anything on the other in skill levels. What a great show!!
We had such a wonderful time seeing the Allman Betts band! We managed to get right up front, without planning to, and were lucky to have only the small rail between us and the most talented musicians. Thank you so much for coming out to play. It only took us a year and half and the wait was so worth it. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
Great small venue with just the right amount of people. The three acts were a perfect match and the sound was great. Loved it.
Given the price of the concert and the overall situation (Caldor fire) this was the perfect concert! 2 lead up groups were very good, high energy and very talented musicians. When Allman Betts came on @10:45, the crowd was ready and they did not disappoint. Great mix of new and old music. Each of the band members had a chance to shine. Crowd was enthusiastic - definitely an older group who obviously loved the original band. Room was fine for the crowd which was light due to travel restrictions. Would have liked a table to put drinks on but I’d go there again even if they didn’t. Great event for such an unusual summer in the Lake Tahoe valley.
The Allman Betts Band is phenomenal. So much energy put into the show and the sound syster was fabulous. I wish they were in town for more than one night. Loved the show
The band is awesome. I see them when ever I have the chance.
First time seeing them. Band awesome. Good show. Mixed in some AB classics and Shakedown Street. But Allman-Betts have great songs and would have liked to hear a few more of them. Sound mix levels not good, annoying bass rumble and distortion. Went to upper level of theater and was better there. Returned to lower for encore and sound much better.
Obviously it’s a five rating just because of who they were born from but if there’s any piece of their dad’s are in their blood then they will have no problem making it to the top charts in no time flat… There’s nothing I could ever to say but how much I loved your dad’s band and went through every city they toured… I was and/still am an old hippie and personally knew your dad’s when I was in Tuscaloosa Alabama and they were the best ever. I can hardly wait to hear that twang of those guitars 🎸 again.
So i am completely addicted to these guys. They have famous daddies but have their own unique style. If you get the chance to go see these boys do it!
I saw the Devon Allman- Duane Betts band last night at the Renaissance. It was surprising how much Devon looks like his uncle, Duane Allman. He even has a brass ring guitar strap like Duane had, ...but that ring was as big as a softball. Betts sings just like Dickie does, ...sounds like him too. They did a marvelous job on "Blue Sky", ...but it was "Jessica" that impressed me the most. The four other musicians are "Masters" of their respective instruments! Slide guitar, piano, and a drum section that was as good as any I ever heard. The Bass player was the best vocalist on the stage. Betts & Devon have three originals that are intricate, explosive compositions that surpassed "High Falls", & "Liz Reed" I think. Very interesting changes and nuances that actually constitute an experience that lift the listener much like the Allman Brothers band did. The crowd around me was standing and carrying on like they probably did forty years ago when the Brothers started all that magic with "Fillmore East". I remember getting that concert on a cassette at Montg Fair in Eastbrook. This show last night was dynamite, ...and had the same "feel" as that show on the cassette, (which was quickly eaten by the player in my car because it was too long for one cassette) BUT, .....those boys last night accomplished their intent quite well, which was to deliver the same atmosphere that Gregg & the boys did at Watkins Glen, (which I listen to frequently). I saw Betty C. from RSA past there also, and she always looks like a twenty year old. She is a very nice person to talk to always. A great show last night!!
A cold weekend, But a very hot show at the Ryman Auditorium. Some entertainers did not show up due to the weather, but others did. The Allman Betts band never disappoints..Ready to see him again real soon with blackberry smoke and Jaimoe
DOING THEIR FATHER'S PROUD -- I LOVE COUNT BASIE THEATER TOO
The guys owned the space. Nice set list. Well paced, great energy. So glad I was there!
Really had a great evening the other night seeing the Allman Betts Band! They had 2 great opening acts that each played a set for about an hour each. Very impressed how good these two openers were! The Allman Betts Band did not disappoint when they got on stage either!! Excellent variety of great songs, including old Allman Bros. tunes, of course, as well as some of their own songs. So many talented musicians on stage!! Didn’t get out of there until 12:15 or so!! They were truly impressive in every way!! The venue was great, too. Nice theater and run well!!
We enjoyed the show, however we were disappointed that we could not stay until the end. This was due to the fact that they had two opening acts and did not come on until 10:00pm. For those of us who work and in our case are up at 5:00am, a midweek concert that goes on until well after midnight doesn't work. Since the other two acts were not listed on the bill we had no idea. Normally an 8:00pm show has no opening act or a 30-40 minute opener. They should have started earlier and when we left at 11:30pm we were joined by a number of others. This is not the way to keep your fan base.
The show was excellent although I could have done without 2 opening acts. JD Simo, the 2nd such act, was top notch.
Devon Allman is truly talented with a terrific voice, Duane Betts was excellent on guitar and vocals. They covered some ABB as expected along with Tom Petty and the Dead. What I was surprised by was the quality of their original material as well as a peek at their new stuff. I'm 63 and rarely tolerant of new album additions and I found the Allman Betts Band highly enjoyable and entertaining. I was not alone the sold out crowd was most appreciative and in response the band seemed to kick it up a notch. We had a great night as a result.
