4 INSANELY TALENTED ACTORS, 150 ROLES
100 BREAKNECK MINUTES OF SHEER THEATRICAL FUN FOR EVERYONE FROM AGES 9 TO 90
“The two-time Tony® Award-winning 39 Steps is a comedic spoof of the classic 1935 film, with only 4 actors portraying more than 150 characters, sometimes changing roles in the blink of an eye. The show’s uproarious fast-paced 100 minutes promises to leave you gasping for breath… in a good way! The brilliantly madcap story follows our dashing hero Richard Hannay as he races to solve the mystery of The 39 Steps, all the while trying to clear his name!”
Ben Brantley of the New York Times called it “Absurdly enjoyable,” “A perfect soufflé,” and “Theatre at its finest.” Liz Smith of the New York Post called it “The most entertaining show on Broadway, ” and Joe Dziemianowicz of the Daily News said it’s “Ingenious! A Dizzy Delight!”

My wife and I went to the Drury Lane Theatre to celebrate our 20th Wedding Anniversary. We ate dinner there and then saw The 39 Steps. The meal was excellent but the service did not meet our expectations. The play was entertaining and provided for many laughs. It was amazing to see 4 actors play 140+ characters. The script was brillient and was brought to life by such fine actors.
Kept me entertained and laughing the whole way through. Lots of physical comedy in this production as well (which I like). The four actors are wonderful. Thoroughly enjoyed myself. Note: There is a bit of strobe lighting and fog effects in this production. I was in the second row and during the fog scenes the poor people in the first row had to keep swatting the fog out of their faces. Second row was fine though--just stay out of the first row if you think this might bother you.
I do not remember when I have seen a play so well done as this production of The 39 Steps. Amazing actors, so well directed!! Drury Lane Oakbrook has raised the bar this time! It will be difficult for future productions to even come close to this one. Howe ver, it does beg us to come see the remaining season.
Drury Lane facility was a great venue. Play was an excellent comedy/mystery and the actors were very energetic having to play 150 characters with only 4 actors. Great action keeps the audience very involved. Highly recommend.
I have never seen more energetic, acrobatic actors than the 4 in this play. Acting out multiple roles, with costume changes and even sex changes, they never failed to deliver the character they were projecting in an entertaining way.
SUPER FUN play with almost non-stop action. I would go back and see it again if I could. The quick-change artistry while switching characters and accents was amazaing. A real tribute to the actors and director was how they could give the illusion of so many locations with so few props and little scenery. Go see it . . .you won't be disappointed.
Story aside, the actors all did an amazing job of taking on multiple characters throughout the show. We found the show very entertaining and would highly recommend it.
Very creative! Fast-paced, hilarious, great use of props to convey scenes, cast was extremely talented and energetic.
It is a great play and also funny. Me and my wife enjoyed it very much.
Wonderful play, brilliant actors and a well designed venue. High farce and fast paced. I took my 14 year old nephew (his first live theater experience - outside of school plays) and he could not stop talking about it! Had I seen it earlier in it's run, I would have turned around and bought another ticket!
The entire show was enjoyable and the first act was amazing. Such timing and such wit! A thoroughly entertaining performance!
I saw this play at the Criterion Theater in London, and again when a touring company came to Columbus, so I know what it is supposed to be. In this performance, the actors were quite talented and put a lot of energy into their performances. The problem lay with the pacing, therefore. the direction. There was too much mugging. In too many instances, the play paused while a given character made facial expressions after delivering lines. Also, in the scene at the inn, when the woman handcuffed to Hannay handed her sandwich to him in order to remove her stockings, the sight gag of his hand being dragged down her leg was lost. This scene is one of the most memorable of the play, so why was it altered? Also, the decision to represent the bi-plane with a moving ladder instead of silhouettes was unfortunate.
The 39 Steps was performed superbly by an extremely talented ensemble cast. The success of this play depends heavily upon the actors comedic timing and this cast was certainly up to the task! The staging was clever and the minimal set only added to the enjoyment of the production - allowing the audience to focus on the actors and their interaction with one another. This play was certainly well cast and the four actors were funny and their accents were well executed. All in all a Hit for CATCO.
