The Candlelight and Holly Days concert was a hit. Cathy Rund demonstrated once again that her voice can fill a room with joy. The music was marvelously performed and Dr. Bowden provided a great performance.

The symphony was wonderful, the guest singer they had was outstanding and both my husband and I enjoyed it very much. This is the first time we have attended and it won't be our last!

The symphony is an excellent way to ring in the holiday season. The Russian number was unforgettable. We will attend again next year.

  • THSO Played Colours

by BalconyListener on 3/21/11Tilson Auditorium - Terre HauteRating: 4 out of 5

The concert opened up with the very colourful "Pleasure Dome of Kubla Kahn." Starting with a hushed gong and bass drum roll, the THSO began its concert with suspense as the pianist played a theme which would recur many times later in the piece. Though I had never heard this piece, I could tell why Dr. Bowden had programmed it with this concert. He asserted that the piece really sounds like colours. Indeed as moods and melodies shift smoothly and rather harshly, at times, one could really hear the emobiment of cool colours like soft blue and peach while brilliant reds and yellows came out from seemingly nowhere in the piece. The THSO also invited guest Saxophonist Paul Bro to play "Escapades for Alto Sax and Orchestra" by master of music of the screen John Williams. Bro was accompanied by orchestra and featured with vibraphones which were also out in front on stage. As Bro's fingers danced through intricate lyrical passages, Nick Stevens, Principle Percussionist, was right with him. I really went to this concert to hear Dr. David Bowden's interpretation of Beethovens 7th symphony. This symphony is definitely a dance piece for the time period. Bowden embraced this theme as he conducted certain parts of the piece which were pure dance rhythms. In the third movement, Bowden had asked Hornist Teresa Ewigleben to do the half-step F-sharp to G without using a valve to make the pitch changes. instead, she was instructed to do as the Hornists from Beethoven's time would by using her lips and hand in the bell of the horn. This she accomplished which greatly added to the strict adherence to the score as written which David Bowden seems to take quite seriously. A great concert by the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra. This was my first concert at the THSO. Quite a drive since I live 2 hours away, but it was more than worth it!

We so enjoyed "Celebrate the Holidays" with Cathy and Rex Rund singing. The music choices were great and the Terry Haute symphony orchestra was in great sound and form. The conductor David Bowden is outstanding and made it a fun evening.
