Tennessee Volunteers Men’s Basketball History
The University of Tennessee men's basketball regularly makes noise in the SEC Tournament and NCAA Tournament, with some recent deep runs to their credit. The Volunteers made a marquee run to the Elite Eight in 2010, when they fell to Michigan State in a one-point loss, but matched their March Madness peak with back-to-back Elite Eight appearances in 2024 and 2025.
The Volunteers are currently coached by former University of Texas head coach Rick Barnes, who took the job in Knoxville in 2015. After a rocky start, Barnes guided them to seven consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances starting in 2018. Under Barnes, the Vols have also captured two of Tennessee’s 12 regular season conference titles and its first conference tournament championship since 1979 (in 2022).
Tennessee has sent luminaries to the pros, like Dale Ellis, Allan Houston, C.J. Watson and the legendary Bernard King, who joined the New York Knicks in the ’80s.

Tennessee Volunteers at Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center
The Volunteers play home games at Thompson-Boling Arena, located on the university’s campus in Knoxville, Tennessee. Thompson-Boling Arena holds a maximum capacity of 21,678 people. The men’s and women’s basketball teams have played in the arena since its opening in 1987. Thompson-Boling Arena takes its name from B. Ray Thompson, who donated $5 million for the arena’s construction in 1982, and former university president Edward J. Boling. The basketball court is also well known as "The Summitt," named after Pat Summitt, the late, legendary coach of the Lady Vols women’s basketball program.
