Nuge Commands the Stage
by Brohawk on 6/28/10House of Blues Myrtle Beach - Myrtle BeachRating: 5 out of 5Saturday evening my darling daughter, Jessica, and I ventured forth and sojourned to the hallowed House of Blues to receive a message from the Reverend Theodocious Attrocious, the Predator Tedator, the Motor City Madman himself, our beloved Uncle Ted.
Having seen some of his in-concert political commentary posted online, I gave her a heads-up that she would probably hear some trash talking about Obama.
She replied, "I'm OK with that." Wonder where she gets that from...
He opened playing The Star Spangled Banner on a Les Paul painted with an American flag. Later he described it as an "American guitar powered by American whitetail backstraps." He played most of the show on this axe, but later switched to his black Gibson Byrdland for "Stranglehold." That guitar has incredible tone.
Along with his own tunes, he covered "You Really Got Me" in an extended jam in the middle of "Wango Tango." In a tribute to his musical roots he also did an amazing instrumental of Hendrix's "Red House. This was way down from deep in the soul blues.
He had a LOT of guns on stage. At one point he picked up a couple of M-16/AR-15 type guns with C-Mags, and holding one overhead in each hand he called out, "FREE MACHINE GUNS FOR THE KIDS!!!" Jess liked that idea. In front of his amps was a mount with a Ma Deuce, a belt of (inert?) linked ammo hanging from its receiver. That's a big gun.
He talked about celebrating American holidays such as Independence Day, Flag Day, Veterans' Day, then said in his house they combined them all into one called Defiance Day that they celebrate every day.
I like that idea. Defiance Day. This nation was founded on the principle of an uppity citizenry being sovereign over a neutered central government. How things have changed...
Speaking of the November elections, he said, "It's open season and there's no bag limit."
I think that sums it up nicely.
