I enjoyed the play. There were a couple of things that I was a little disappointed in because after all, this is Tarzan, and I expected a little more of his signature yell, which they only had him do once at the very end. I also expected a little more of his 'swinging through the trees'. But I understand this is reality and there are certain limitations they most likely faced.
We saw it opening night and I know there were still some things that they had to work out, so I can forgive the 'oops' moments. I did see a few things that made me raise my eyebrows though. One thing was the first time you see Jane. The opening of the scene was pure blacklight with fluorescent bugs and flora and fauna. It was very much tripping on LSD moments. Then it was as if they went full on she was having an orgasm on stage... or masturbating to the flora/fauna. I'm like what is going on? Did they really write it that way? She was excited in the original script, but WHAT is this? I had to stifle my laughter because it really didn't go with the play.
The other part that I found was there were certain parts which felt stilted and didn't flow. Especially 'Trashing the Camp'. I love that song from the original Disney movie and it was a jumbled mess. It just sounded like a bunch of crashing dishes. I could barely hear any of the singing at all and the actual sounds didn't even sound like they were making music just a bunch of crashing dishes and harsh noises. I was truly disappointed in that.
My favorite character was Terk. LOVED HIM! He was awesome! They chose a great character there. The actor for Tarzan was a good choice. Kerchek was also a great choice. The actress for Jane was okay. She seemed older than expected. Not saying that age is an issue, but she just didn't fit IMO. Her whole persona was rather beyond mature for what Jane was with regards to age, looks, etc. She appeared much older than Tarzan and it was off putting.
Overall, it was enjoyable and I would recommend seeing it at least once, even if only just for Terk.
