Tampa Bay Lightning History

The Tampa Bay Lightning joined the league as an expansion team (along with the Ottawa Senators) in 1992, and earned their first berth in the Playoffs in the 1995-1996 season. The Bolts began to achieve consistent success in 2002-2003; the key ingredient was 1998 first-round draft pick Vincent Lecavalier, a center who went on to play 14 seasons for the Lightning and set almost every team scoring record.

After making the second round in the 2002-2003 Playoffs, the Bolts rocketed to the Stanley Cup Final the following season behind the league's scoring leader, Martin St. Louis, the goaltending of Nikolai Khabibulin, and the efforts of Lecavalier, Brad Richards, Fredrik Modin, Ruslan Fedotenko, Cory Stillman, and captain Dave Andreychuk. The Lightning defeated the Calgary Flames in a Stanley Cup Final that included four games decided by one goal, two of which came in overtime. Fedotenko scored both goals in the clinching 2-1 victory in Game 7.

The Lightning flirted with Playoff success the next two seasons, but struggled for three years after that. After bringing in Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman as general manager, the team returned to the Playoffs in 2010-2011, 2013-2014, and again the following season, when the Bolts — boasting the highest-scoring offense in the league — won 50 games, and the Eastern Conference title. They dispatched the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, and New York Rangers in a hard-fought series en route to the Stanley Cup Final, where they ultimately lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games.

Powered by the scoring of Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos, the Lightning contended again in 2015-2016, only to be turned away in the conference finals by the eventual winner of the Stanley Cup Championship, the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Lightning subsequently went on to win back-to-back titles, taking home the Stanley Cup Championship in 2020 and 2021, becoming the first-ever team to win two Stanley Cup Championships within one year. The Lightning appeared in the championship again in 2022, but lost to the Colorado Avalanche in Game 6.

Pricy seats. Fantastic view - center ice 100 section Tough to warrant regular games with the family or business at the price point.

    Exciting game despite the loss

by 94JZA80 on 11/16/09St Pete Times Forum Tampa Bay Lightning - Tampa

Not a bad seat in the house, and this is coming from a couple who sat in the "nose bleed" section. The Forum is a great place for NHL Hockey.

    Hockey is the best!!!

by Texcowboy on 11/4/09St Pete Times Forum Tampa Bay Lightning - Tampa

Thanks very much!!! It was my first HOCKEY game...I have been watching hockey only for a few weeks, purchased the cable option "NHL on ICE" through my cable provider. My partner is Canadian, she has been a wonderful teacher. I love the Tampa Bay Lightning as their skating and team spirit along with the ability to pass the puck is awesome!!! I haven't been a long time fan...BOY!!! IS IT GROWING. It was so easy to book the flight, get a car and even the hotel package. Getting the ticket was even easier! It all started when we recorder the game from the night before, watching it Sunday morning...I looked at my girl and said let's go to a game...she asked which one? I said Tampa Bay who else...but they're not playing anywhere close. How about a trip next weekend. We left out Friday night arrived about midnight, visited a friend Saturday morning for brunch, saw some sights in Tampa Bay, took a shuttle to the game and the rest is HISTORY. THIS WON'T BE THE LAST TIME, IT WAS SPECTACULAR!!!! LET'S GO LIGHTNING!!!!!

    Good facility

by Chuckford on 11/2/09St Pete Times Forum Tampa Bay Lightning - Tampa

The ticket prices were reasonable. Beer and food was more expensive then average; $10 for a beer is a bit steap. Great location and plenty of activities for kids and adults alike.

    Absolutely best first hockey game!!!!!!!!

by JANLOVESSUN on 11/1/09St Pete Times Forum Tampa Bay Lightning - Tampa

This was the first professional ice hockey game that I went to, and even though I now live in Florida, I'm originally from New Jersey, so we were rooting for the Devils. Neither team scored in the first period, the Devils scored 1 goal in the second period, then the Lightning scored a goal in the third period, tying up the score. Game went into Overtime, and neither team scored. Then it came down to a Shootout, and tension mounted as one by one, players tried to score, until finally, the Devils scored the winning goal! It was a totally unforgettable first game for me to see.

The seats, while high up still weren't bad as far as visibility. The ticket prices weren't too much, though the food and drink prices were way too much.

    An amazing Night

by ffew on 10/26/09St Pete Times Forum Tampa Bay Lightning - Tampa

I love ice-hockey anyway, but actually seeing an NHL game is the US was brilliant. The pace and skill of the players is quality. St Pete's is a welcoming enough venue. Prices are quite steep mind, so take enough money to break the bank. But it was totally worth it.

    Lightning vs. Sabres

by Enforcer10 on 10/26/09St Pete Times Forum Tampa Bay Lightning - Tampa

The game was awesome, the Lightning played a tough game and Smith stood on his head. The shootout was a plus, even though we lost. Club level is nicer than most peoples homes, with a bathroom outside almost every stairway and drinks right there. The Forum is definetly a great venue.

    Game great;seats not

by Jose69 on 10/12/09St Pete Times Forum Tampa Bay Lightning - Tampa

I took a group of children to the game. Purchasing tickets on-line is easy and convenient and I have done it in the past. Not being familiar with the St Pete Times Forum, I was unaware that the best tickets available would be the third level, section T. Needless to say, we were disappointed to be placed at the highest possible point in the stadium and look at many other empty seats in the third level. The game was excellent and we will probably do some more.....Maybe

It was an amazing night for my first game at St Pete's Times Forum... Lightning won 5-2 and the last three goals were scored just in front of my place (section 103)... Great crowd even if the Forum was not full...
