TALIB KWELI IN CONCERT:

When it comes to socially conscious hip hop, Talib Kweli is in a class all by himself. Combining a distinctly stylish delivery, a gift for intricate rhymes, and a passionate political message, his expertly produced tracks are just as likely to inspire debate as they are dancing. Whether he's collaborating with DJ Hi-Tek or rolling solo, Kweli always delivers a top-notch performance -- which is precisely why fans are so fired up about his 2014 Black Star reunion dates with longtime collaborator Mos Def.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Brooklyn-born rapper Talib Kweli Greene initially broke into the rap game through the Beat Junkies' Lyricist Lounge mixtape project. His subsequent work in Cincinnati with the group Mood resulted in a collaboration with producer Hi-Tek, with whom he has enjoyed a career-spanning creative partnership. While these projects made clear his prodigious talent, it wasn't until he linked up with Mos Def as Black Star that he really achieved widespread success. The critical and commercial success of their debut album Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star played a major role in the record industry's growing recognition of underground hip-hop as a serious force, becoming a genre classic in the process. With six solo records now under his belt and a Black Star reunion hitting venues in 2014, the sky is the limit.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Never seen Kweli live before, but I'll never forget it. Went out and bought Gutter Rainbows after it, and it's the real deal! Please go support our indie artists!"

"This bought back memories of being a teenager and jamming to REAL MUSIC. It was worth getting home late. Great show. Lots of energy."

"Absolutely amazing! These guys played their hearts out and rocked the place."

    Talib...solid performance

by TutuTrain on 11/21/10The Ritz Ybor - Tampa

Good speaker volume for vocals; I've definitely been to shows where I can barely here the lyricist over the base. Nice size venue; I was all the way in the back and still had a good view.

    A bit underwhelming...

by Twotonesmalone on 11/21/10The Ritz Ybor - Tampa

The show was advertised as $15.00. Tickets were advertised to be available at the venue all week, but they were only online and cost 11.00 more after fees. The opening act was on. Joell Ortiz was on fire. The headliner (Talib) was entertaining, and on point, to be expected. But I expected more. I suppose that is the Nature of Hip Hop shows... Less musical production of course, but in particular, the things I was dissapointed about most, were... The Mic was too loud. Hi Tek wasn't there, but the show was advertised as "Reflection Eternal" I heard him spitting over tracks that had his vocals behind himself. That just sounded cheap. Amazing talent, however in comparison the the last few hip hop shows I've attended, Wu Tang, Del the Funky homosapien, De la Soul... This show was the least entertaining, and I expected it to be on par or better.

    Reflection Eternal

by HIPHOPLIVES4ME on 6/3/10Showbox at the Market - Seattle

Tight show, reflection eternal was sick, strong arm steady was sick, U-N-I was pretty good but MAD RAD WAS TERRIBLE. THEY SHOULD NEVER GET ANOTHER SHOW EVER! I WAS EMBARRASSED FOR THE CITY OF SEATTLE AND WILL BE SURE TO COME LATE IF THEY ARE EVER OPENING FOR ANOTHER ARTIST AGAIN. (I HOPE NOT)

U-N-I at a show with Talib Kweli!? Too good!

by VVhyNot on 6/1/10Showbox at the Market - Seattle

UNI killed it in my opinion. You bring them back I am for sure seeing them again. Those guys were humble as hell. Talib Kweli and Hi Tek did their thing as well! Seeing a legend is always an incredible feeling. Mad rad in my opinion did not fit in that show, would have loved to see LAWS do a few more tracks than those party mountain fools. Just saying. I respect their attempt.

show was well done. good colaboration with Hi Tek. Good to see them with the old beats. Venue disappointing. Sound was horrible (alot of feedback ) Liked the fact that you get close to the artist.

1st RE show I saw - was disappointingly way 2SHORT

by OverADecadeKweFan on 5/31/10House of Blues San Diego - San Diego

I had never attended a Kweli show so short - I kid you not - seemed no longer than an hour and could've been no longer than 1.5 hours with the whole going off stage and coming back on for a (2 song i think it was? or maybe 3) encore.. i was highly disappointed! I brought a few friends and spent alot of money on tickets for all of us - only to be let down by them (especially Kweli!) who I've come to expect quality from, since his previous shows i've seen in SD were amazing at the HOB. this really sucked but i can say he seemed to be pouring his heart out the time he was on. not so much feeling his newer material tho - only back again and maybe 1 or 2 other RE songs off the new album... and oh ya - LEAVE SAS at HOME!!!

Classic Brooklyn MC rocks the Brooklyn of PTown

    by SJT44 on 5/31/10Aladdin Theater - Portland

Great show (even better than Snoop was in March!) Good to see Kweli and Hi-Tek work in new as well as classic tracks seamlessly. Enjoyed the fact that they featured records from other artists (Get em' High, for example). My only criticism would have been for Kweli to play more of his solo hits (Good to You, I Try), though with time constraints it is understandable. Opening acts were refreshingly good and established a great tone for the whole evening.

    Talib: Up and Down.

    by XxJ0rdanxX on 5/31/10Aladdin Theater - Portland

Overall the show was pretty good. I'd say slightly better than average. I've seen Talib twice before this and I'd have to say that this was my least favorite show of his but still a decent show. The opening act should've been the opening act. I felt that he often took to many members of the opening acts and incorperated them on stage with him. While I respect Talib very much for his outreach to those aspiring rappers and getting them on stage with him during his act, I came to see a main event that featured Talib & Hi Tek. Not UNI, or other artists.

Show was off the chain. As usual Talib set it off. And even more amazing to see Hi-Tek with him. 1st time I got to see them together. I only wish there was some gear to buy... but all in all mind blowing! Chase

Talib Was Great! DJ not so much.

by inkyblack on 5/30/10The Fillmore - San Francisco

It took forever for the show to actually start, which we anticipated but not by that much. The DJ who was on seemed to spin forever and he wasn't very good. Most of his songs were typical and got seriously old after an hour of listening to him...he lasted close to three hours in total DJing time. It was absolutly rediculous. Talib was amazing though and I loved the way that he worked with Hi-Tek. Their flow was awsome and the idea of putting up videos behind them was smart because even though the venue was relatively small and we could all see them, it was also awsome to watch them sing live while the music videos played.

Great Performance by Kweli & Hi-Tek

    by ty360 on 5/29/10Aladdin Theater - Portland

A really good show, Kweli has some of the sickest rhymes that I've heard and Hi-Tek is an amazing producer. The only thing that wasn't great about the performance came from the venues sound guy, a lot of feedback.

    Great Performer, Unfortunate Venue

by AmandaLin on 5/29/10Aladdin Theater - Portland

This was my third concert at the Aladdin, each featured a very different types of music. (Suzanne Vega, Portland Cello Project, and now Talib Kweli.) I can say without reservation that the Aladdin is great for intimate, acoustic performances but was terrible for a hip hop concert. The vocals were extremely difficult to make out and the bass was predominate. I left deafened, without feeling like I really "heard" the music. Talib Kweli is a great performer, got the audience energized and interested, and is a talented artist. He noticed the sound quality and even made some comments about the vocals not coming out of the monitors on the stage. I would highly recommend his show, but would advise everyone to stay away from the Aladdin for hip hop performances. (In contrast, it was the perfect venue for Suzanne Vega.)

    hip hoppin at the filmore

by Gambo650 on 5/26/10The Fillmore - San Francisco

The show was a amazing. One of the opening acts kind of killed the energy, but once reflection eternal came on, the energy was fully restored and more. Kweli's swagger on stage destroyed any negative vibe and his collaboration with hi-teks beats filled the venue with true hip-hop love. Next time Mos Def needs to be there to rap his verses. Otherwise, Sickest hip hop show I've seen.

    SUPER DOPENESS!!

by Caramelicious on 5/26/10The Fillmore - San Francisco

I would have given this concert 5 stars IF: The 2 opening acts for Reflection Eternal had actually left a memorable impresson on me and my group of 3; if the concert didn't start so damn late. Standing around for almost 4 hrs is NOT cool. Reflection Eternal did not hit the stage until around 11PM. It would have been acceptable if I actually lived in the city of San Fran. But we drove almost 2 hrs (live in Elk Grove) to see these cats on a Monday night knowing damn well we all had to work early the next morning. If that ain't showin' madd love, I don't know what is!! However we did enjoy seeing Mr. F.A.B and 3 members of Hiero. Overall it was a good concert. There's no doubt in my mind that R.E knows how to turn the party out.

never really listened to his music before but my boyfriend is a huge fan of his....now i can see why! i loved the concert yesterday everyone gets so caught including myself with radio play music not saying his music gets no radio play but its not the type of music this generation really listens to. like erykah badu said people are afraid to be themselves because they are afraid of what others are going to say/think, its just like music, i didnt realize until last night how every artist is doing the same thing now no one really sticks out from the other no personailty! Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek true hip hop artists! l

    Talib is da Man!

by JAsontheslacker on 5/25/10The Fillmore - San Francisco

Great show, good beats. I just wish Talib did more of his solo stuff. Hi-Tek was cool, but he almost looks shy on stage.

Too long of a wait until he came on

by TSGM on 5/24/10Ventura Theatre - Ventura

Talib is obviously a great artist and super entertaining. Once he finally came on (after 10pm...for an 8pm show...on a Sunday night!), he was wonderful. The acts leading up were disappointing, though. I think Oxnard High School was hosting a talent show or something? Overall, the venue was great - easy to find, easy parking, very chill atmosphere, will definitely see a concert there again. I would just say that it would have been nice to enjoy Talib earlier in the evening and left out so many of the intro acts.
