TALIB KWELI IN CONCERT:

When it comes to socially conscious hip hop, Talib Kweli is in a class all by himself. Combining a distinctly stylish delivery, a gift for intricate rhymes, and a passionate political message, his expertly produced tracks are just as likely to inspire debate as they are dancing. Whether he's collaborating with DJ Hi-Tek or rolling solo, Kweli always delivers a top-notch performance -- which is precisely why fans are so fired up about his 2014 Black Star reunion dates with longtime collaborator Mos Def.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Brooklyn-born rapper Talib Kweli Greene initially broke into the rap game through the Beat Junkies' Lyricist Lounge mixtape project. His subsequent work in Cincinnati with the group Mood resulted in a collaboration with producer Hi-Tek, with whom he has enjoyed a career-spanning creative partnership. While these projects made clear his prodigious talent, it wasn't until he linked up with Mos Def as Black Star that he really achieved widespread success. The critical and commercial success of their debut album Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star played a major role in the record industry's growing recognition of underground hip-hop as a serious force, becoming a genre classic in the process. With six solo records now under his belt and a Black Star reunion hitting venues in 2014, the sky is the limit.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Never seen Kweli live before, but I'll never forget it. Went out and bought Gutter Rainbows after it, and it's the real deal! Please go support our indie artists!"

"This bought back memories of being a teenager and jamming to REAL MUSIC. It was worth getting home late. Great show. Lots of energy."

"Absolutely amazing! These guys played their hearts out and rocked the place."

Talib puts on a great show!

by mymichy on 4/5/11Club Nokia - Los Angeles

This was my second time seeing Talib. He never fails to entertain and get my hips moving. I like how he mixes up his set - classic hits, to new jams to covers. His guests were also awesome (Reese - has an amazing voice!). Club Nokia is sweet venue to host him. I had a great time!

    Disappointing

by cocobaby42 on 4/5/11Club Nokia - Los Angeles

The overall concert was not a success. The opening act, Fah-shion was not original. All they did was rap over other people's beats. Lame in my opinion, I would never see them again. David Banner was horrible, I don't know how he got put on this tour with Talib Kweli. They are two MCs with very different styles. Banner from the South, and Kweli representing true hip hop culture. David Banner was offensive and provided no entertainment value to the concert. He ranted about non-sense that was not relevant to the show. The worst part of the show is when he made the comment, "I'm gonna let my nuts hang, like my ancestors did from trees". Worst line of the show, it makes no sense and is completely irrelevant to any message he had to convey. I would NEVER see him again. 9th Wonder didn't really do much but spin the beats for David Banner. I was hoping he would have done some emceeing, but I guess that was too much to ask for. Talib Kweli was good, but given the lackluster opening acts, by the time he came on stage I was ready to leave.

    Talib Kweli rocked it

by rrok on 4/5/11Club Nokia - Los Angeles

I came late only to see the main act Talib Kweli. He brought his A game - He had an awesome band and dj along which made it a complete event, and the sound quality at Nokia was great. The only weird thing was that he stopped the show half way through to invite some political cause on the stage with a banner and allowed a few people to speak. It completely killled the momentum of the show and I have no idea what prompted him to do that. There is nothing more annoying than going to see a show and having the artist get into politics. But I do love his music

Talib Kweli - hip hop sermon

by 1upita on 4/5/11Club Nokia - Los Angeles

Talib was amazing as usual. His energy and lyrics cannot be beat. He represented all his classics and hit hard with the new stuff. Also, I was impressed with David Banner. He really worked the crowd. I still feel the high from the show!

    Talib Rocked The House

by 1sand2s on 4/1/11Showbox at the Market - Seattle

Was curious of he would be able to party rock. Was pleasantly surprised with the quality of his show and group. Always been a fan. Was just unsure how his music would translate live. All in all it was a memorable night.

Talib Kweli Gutter Rainbows tour at Showbox

by LINUS914 on 4/1/11Showbox at the Market - Seattle

From beginning to end, Kweli kept you in the concert. He put it down. Only drawback was the sound system. Kweli's mic was fine, but the microphones/sound of the DJ and female vocalist were never right: either too low, too high (feedback), or just not on. GET IT TOGETHER, Showbox. When Kweli and others are constantly asking to turn up the mic...turn it up.

Should Have Done a Sound Check

by pinkplumeria on 4/1/11Showbox at the Market - Seattle

There was a lot of energy in the room, both from the crowd and the performers, but I couldn't enjoy the concert. The bass and mics were cranked up too far (even for a hip hop concert), making the lyrics just sound like a jumble. Didn't get a headache like some complained about, but my teeth were ringing from the bass (We were in the back of the room, not right next to the stage or near the speakers). Talib Kweli at one point even violently motioned to his back-up singer to stop her riff because her mic was overpowering him. We went because my boyfriend had seen Talib Kweli at the Showbox before; he said it was one of the best concerts he'd ever seen. Everything he liked about that concert was missing. I just couldn't stop thinking that they must have skipped the sound check, or just think that louder is better.

    A-freakin

by BadTeacher on 4/1/11Showbox at the Market - Seattle

A-MAZE-ING!!! Talib and his band were spot-on, the sound was excellent, and the crowd was well-behaved. I have seen Talib numerous times, but this being the first concert of the tour, it was definitely the best I have seen. Well worth the $20, and I would have easily paid more.

    great show, authentic

by talibfan on 4/1/11Showbox at the Market - Seattle

I love that Talib tours with a band rather than a recording. He had great energy and performed amazingly. My only complaint is that he hardly touched his older stuff. He opened and closed with old stuff, but the middle was less exciting for me.

    TALIB KWELI

by LINDIN17 on 11/23/10The Ritz Ybor - Tampa

I got there late because I drove from Orlando so I missed the opening act, and Joel Ortiz. I got there right before Kweli got on stage, it was a good show. I was very disapointed that Hi-Tek was no there. He's one of my favorite producers. but all in all it was a good show. It wouldn't hurt Kweli to thank his fans for coming out either.

Joell and Talib rocked the Ritz

by TampaEm on 11/21/10The Ritz Ybor - Tampa

It is rare when you go to a show and the opening act is as-good-as a performer , as the headliner. This was the case with Joell Ortiz and Talib. Both of these men were charismatic, energetic, and so entertaining. Ortiz's lyrics and ability to deliver were impressive. Although Hi Tec was missing, Talib really brought it with some great new music off his upcoming album, and of course a bunch of old favorites. Great Show!

    Kweli was thrice as nice!

by TheMOamper on 11/21/10The Ritz Ybor - Tampa

Worth EVERY penny! Great line-up off lyrical MCees! Once the show started the crowd could not get enough. Since the cal for Kweli was so strong, Talib had to return to the stage to perform an encore TWICE!
