Taj Mahal at the Wilbur Theatre

by gsilverado on 2/27/11Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Classic Taj Mahal. Lots of blues. Slow to high energy. His guitar playing was totally on and his voice was in fine shape. A couple of african tunes, alittle piano and even a banjo number. I would have given it 5 stars but he only played for an hour and 45 minutes.

    taj mahal

by safeasmilk on 2/27/11Wilbur Theatre - Boston

taj mahal was terrific. He has a great persona and it is reflected in his music. Although his base music is blues, he also does island and african influenced songs. He sees and appreciates the connectivity between all music. He also communicating well with the audience. His guitar playing is clear as a bell and he varies the flavor of the performance by switching between electiic and acoustic guitar; and playing some piano too. His backup band did a good job and fit well behind him. This was one of the most enjoyable shows I've seen in a long time.

    Massachusetts's "Original Bluesman" Returns

    by B125 on 2/27/11Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Taj was great and a must see for blues and music fans from all backgrounds and generations. Hearing Going Fishing, Queen Bee, and Corrina live for the first time in Boston in a while was really special to this town. Massachusetts's "Original Bluesman" returned with a great show. Hope he returns again soon.

    Still one of the best!

    by jo54 on 2/27/11Wilbur Theatre - Boston

At a young 68, Taj Mahal can still make you smile! The audience was comprised of young and old all enjoying the fabulous, magical fingers of a master. At first I didn't know what to expect from only a "Trio", but the way they made their instruments sing I soon realized that they didn't need any help from anyone else to make their kind of music come alive! To see this group was a real treat. A lot having to do with seeing their expressions and their interaction with one another. The opening act (his daughter Diva's band) was also fun to see and hear.

    Taj Mahal was smokin

    by 910club on 2/26/11Wilbur Theatre - Boston

This was a memorable performance, it was smokin crazy blues yet classic and intimate at the same time. He started out absolutley just jammin, this was a great an unexpected treat. Taj Mahal can really play the blues. His movement and stage presence was genuine, sexy and like that of a great blues master. Eventually he settled into his classic folky, island blues sound, and rattled of his own classics but with a refreshing upbeat and twist. My soul was filled and my smile full...

    Taj is a musical treasure

    by zsazsa1 on 2/26/11Wilbur Theatre - Boston

I have seen his last three Boston area shows. He is great every time he performs. A joy to watch and listen to. He plays guitar, banjo, piano and he sings. He was accompanied by a drummer and bass guitar player. His music is pure.

Taj Mahal- Paint my mailbox blue... and then some.

    by Gaz02026 on 2/26/11Wilbur Theatre - Boston

One of the best times I've had at a concert event. Taj Mahal took the stage and owned it for the night. The band was tight, the music covered ALL the bases.... what an amazing sound he gets from those guitars. Front row seats were great for watching that vibrant personality as he grimaced, growled and pranced across the stage.

    Don't miss Taj Mahal

by Saltpeanuts on 2/26/11Wilbur theater - Boston

taj mahal at the Wilbur theater in Boston was a special experience. The Wilbur theater was a great venue. I sat comfortably in the mezzanine section with a great "close" feeling view and experienced terrific, loud, crisp sound. The floor seating looked cramped and you had to turn your chair and contort body to face the stage. Would definitely recommend the mezz seating for music or comedy at this venue. The drunk hippie couple near me even found room to "dance" as there was space in the aisle to the left. There was an opening act in progress as we walked in. They were a local band that sounded good, but overall not my cup of tea. The singer, great voice, turned out to be taj's daughter. They sang together for an encore. Taj was unbelievable! Amazing to see such a master of blues guitar live. Not many people can generate the sound he can from his incredible instruments. Do not pass this up. He is a living legend and he still puts on a great, high energy show. Some people complain about his short set, but I thought it was right on. In Boston he played straight blues, with a sprinkle of world influences. The straight blues was crackling with energy. His guitar work was something to behold. The drummer and bass player also were tight. If your debating going to see taj, hopefully this review will help Influence your undecided ass to just do it. Go!

    Taj Mahal at Jazz Alley

    by Scottydog1 on 11/22/10Jazz Alley - Seattle

Incredible show - I can mark that one off my bucket list - always wanted to see Taj, and now I have - the unexpected surprise of the evening was Jazz Alley! What a great place to see a show - we had cocktail only reservations, and those with dinner reservations had better seating, but there isn't a bad seat in the house! I'd say if there was, we had 'em..... we were off ot the side of the stage, only about 50 feet from Taj, and we got to shake his hand as he had to walk past us to get off stage! Great view, great treat to get to actually make contact with the man. Ended up being a perfect weekend!

Incredible guitar playing by two masters

by CharlieLouise on 10/27/10Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los Angeles

Listening to Vieux play guitar was like white-water rafting... exhilarating and energizing! He encouraged the audience to stand up and dance, and we did! He melds so many traditions, but the African rhythms are strong. Taj focused mostly on American blues - also hard to sit still, and it was mesmerizing. The two cultural traditions coming together - Taj with his drummer and Vieux with his percussionist drumming on gourds, jamming together in an Afro-blues mix, talking back and forth with their guitars - well, I can't find words to describe it, but I will never forget it.

Taj was great, but Vieux stole the show

by KMfromMB on 10/25/10Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los Angeles

Vieux Farka Toure is simply amazing. He is def. one of the the biggest up and coming guitarists on the planet - though Africa already knows what a talent he is. His nickname is the "Hendrix of the Sahara" and nickname is justly warranted. I really hope he comes back to LA soon. Taj Mahal was also wonderful. The dude still sounds great and has such an infectious positive attititude, you can't help but smile the whole time he is on stage. What a treat to have these two together on one ticket. A Master from the past and a Master from the future.

Let down for fan due to technical difficulties

    by PiedmontSue on 10/25/10Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

Taj was great as always and Foday Musa Suso was a delight on the kora. Suso had to entertain an audience expecting to hear Toumani Diabate. Being a stand in is hard and Suso did well. The sound system, on the other hand, was a terrible failure. The opening band was not balanced and was too loud. When Suso joined the band there was no attempt to fix the thundering feedback that erupted. the feedback was loud, unpleasant and masked the music. We in the audience deserve a professional sound check and amplification that does justice to the music and musicians. The Paramount crew needs improvement.

    A near miss

    by Oaklandish on 10/25/10Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

This had the makings for a fantastic event and there were moments that were absolutely brilliant. There was a little too much Foday Musa Suso during this show, unfortunately. He's a wonderful artist, but It was clear that the audience (ourselves included) were anxious to see more of the headliner, and Suso's fourth consecutive long-ish solo was a bit too much. Many people were sighing or using it as an excuse to get out of their seats for a stretch and restroom break. Watching Vieux Farka Toure play was a real treat. His father would be proud. The energy between the three men was a bit off, and when they played together, Suso - who is not the most humble artist - was doing quite a bit of stage grabbing. At one point Mahal stepped up and ended a song abruptly, and we turned and looked at each other and laughed out loud. Mahal has been there done that and clearly knows how to remind a younger musician of his manners.

This was a really fun concert.... Vieux Farka Toure had us stand up to dance for their last number.. but I was already tapping my toes to the this lively music for their whole set. Taj Mahal is just a master of blues.. his opening number was rather loud, but it got you in the spirit of the night.. He went on to use 4 different guitars, a keyboard and a banjo.. what a fabulous blues player.. I had no idea you could play the blues with the banjo!!

    Taj Mahal is always fantastic

by rlhb on 7/17/10Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple Valley

This was one of the most comfortable entertaining concerts I have attended in years. It was obvious that the entire audience was mesmerized by the performance. The venue was perfect for a warm summer evening.
