About

Sunflower Bean is a dynamic indie rock band from New York City, known for their genre-blending sound that merges psych-rock, alternative, and dream-pop. Formed in 2013 as teenagers, the band quickly caught attention with their infectious energy and introspective lyrics. The core lineup--Julia Cumming (vocals, bass), Nick Kivlen (vocals, guitar), and Olive Faber (drums)--have built a reputation for their captivating live shows and genre-defying music.

Their debut album, Human Ceremony (2016), introduced the band's shimmering, psychedelic sound, followed by their critically acclaimed Twentytwo in Blue (2018), which saw them explore more polished pop-rock territory. In 2022, Sunflower Bean released their highly anticipated third album, Headful of Sugar, a bold and experimental record, marking a creative leap forward for the band.

Throughout their career, Sunflower Bean has toured extensively, playing alongside legendary acts like Beck, The Pixies, The Strokes, and DIIV and have also performed at major festivals like Glastonbury, Governor's Ball, Lollapalooza, and more. Their live shows have earned a devoted fanbase for their high energy, with Cumming and Kivlen's dual vocals taking centre stage and creating an electric atmosphere wherever they perform.

With a growing legacy in the indie rock scene, Sunflower Bean continues to push boundaries with their music, always evolving while staying true to their roots.

"Spirited interpreters of rock 'n' roll's eternal truths...Sunflower Bean are equally adept at studio finesse and raucous live noise." - The New York Times

"it's amazing to see and hear this band's maturation...Cumming's vocal is strong and confident, and the classic rock riffs conjure up comparisons to Joan Jett....ridiculously talented " - NPR

"..one of their generation's most pleasurable rock bands" - NME

"one of the best bands in America" - Billboard

  • Greatest Rock show this century

by James on 5/25/25Warsaw - BrooklynRating: 5 out of 5

I drove from Boston to NYC to see their show at Warsaw. I had to be back at work the next day so I drove home right after the show ended. Some might think I’m crazy but it was well worth the 10 hours in the car. I don’t want to get too far into the weeds so let’s just say(as the title says) the greatest rock show of the century. Rock and roll is not dead. It’s alive and well. See sunflower bean.

  • DUUUUDE

by Llcat on 11/8/22The Southern Cafe & Music Hall - CharlottesvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome! They rocked. I'm so glad I was finally able to see them. The opening bands were good as well. Mix of 20-50 year olds. There were optional seats. They came out and were super personable after the show:)

good venue, great sound system, and super low attendance, fun show nonetheless

  • This is one of the best new young bands ever!

by Lutoslawski23 on 9/26/18Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic show. St. Louis had no idea who they were, but NYC and many other places do! Such a treat to see them up close in such a tiny room! Ticketmaster on the other hand, is a nightmare.

This show was so amazing, fun all around. Mosh pits, crowd surfing, and fans stage diving. I got a chance to meet them as well, they’re as humble as can be. Super awesome band.

  • blew my mind

by NYCliveshowfan on 10/12/16Music Hall of Williamsburg - BrooklynRating: 5 out of 5

Went to the show not knowing what to expect, as I wasn't familiar with the band. On Spotify, Sunflower Bean's music sounded pretty mellow and chill. Live it is loud, intense and heavy. The show was a little out of control, just the way I like it. Openers The Lemon Twigs and B Boys were both fantastic in their own ways. Don't miss this tour.

  • Sunflower Bean is Real. Sunflower Bean is Rock.

This was one of the best sounds and the most passion I have seen at a live show. I do not like to compare or categorize artists. But it felt like an Arcade Fire meets Velvet Underground meets Mazzy Star vibe. I will see them again and again and again. A breath of fresh air for music. Love.

  • Sunflower Bean is edgy, fun and nostalgic

by MmmmmTtttttttt on 5/11/16Mohawk Place - BuffaloRating: 5 out of 5

I've been reading many articles on them for the past 4 months. I saw they were touring in our area and got tickets. Both my husband and I were pleasantly surprised. What a show!!!! Julia on vocals and bass was at ease and a total delight. I read she's been in the music business since her early teens. She really was incredible. Nick was also on vocals and guitar. He resemblese a young Bob Dylan, but played guitar like Jimmy Page. Wow, just wow! We were totally mesmerized by his old school playing. Lastly, Jacob played the drums. His drumming skills were top of the line and he drummed like it was nobody's business. The three of them together: pure bliss! Catch them before they start selling out arenas. They are definitely going places. A new and forever fan.....

  • Great Band! Julia Cumming is a star!

by GHOOV on 2/28/16Bowery Ballroom - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Great time with the powerful Sunflower Bean at the Bowery Ballroom. Where else can you combine 80s alt with the Velvets, Sabbbath and Blondie? Nick the guitarist seems to be a cross between Bob Dylan and Lou Reed and Doug Yule, but his guitar work carries the band! Jake, the drummer is man from another time and another place. What a great trio.
