    Ready for Broadway?

by LJMass on 7/11/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

The Summer of Love was a fun experience but is not ready for Broadway in it's current arrangement. The idea that an audience will sit through what is essentially a 25 act play (each song is the end of each act) won't fly. There needs to be a bit more dialogue to set up the reason the hippie movement and anti-war movement started, upfront and not in the background videos around act 13' it might help to know why Holly is there, and the songs are too much of the dialogue and the lyrics don't always fit the context, maybe one line does but that doesn't mean you run the whole tune as dialogue! Maybe a few of the songs could be cut, perhaps the ones that were not written yet during the period depicted! The company is certainly up to the task! They were great Michelle Lee and Missy Drowse were solid and Soara-Joye Ross was outstanding with her Janis Joplin tune, the male lead was good but you ended up wishing he would be the one getting slapped around by Moma and not Curtis. On a technical note the amplified mikes on each actor come across as too brassy and loud I would have enjoyed a more acoustic tone.

by YorkHarborWannabe on 7/11/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

Summer of Love was a wonderful performance--the music, the acting---just spectacular. We absolutely loved every moment of it. We have been to many performances at your theater and this was one of our favorites.

Summer of Love was so good I want to go again!

by Milliemonique on 7/11/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

Very professional production, original story, well-known songs from the 60s tied the story together. Instrumental musicians in the background were awesome. Loved the way some songs were performed exactly as they were in the original and others were slightly different, in a very pleasing way. This production took risks, and I for one, really appreciated that they didn't play it safe with some scenes. In fact, the Hair production in Boston didn't take the same risks and it really ruined the show. Go see Summer of Love!

I didn't know what to expect as I'd never heard of this show. I was pleasantly surprised as it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. I'd see it again in a heartbeat.

Excellent performances with the exception of Michele Lee who can not sing but is in a musical. Very confusing! But everyone else had an excellent voice and the entire play was a joy.

All cast members with the exception of Michelle Lee had fantastic voices. The story was cute and the nostalgic skits were extremely funny. It was a play that made you feel good and everyone left smiling .....Go, and don't forget to wear flowers!

    Summer of Love so delightful

by Shiels on 7/6/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

This was worth the trip from New York. The music, and cast were really outstanding. Would go back a second time if I could. Only one little criticism - the story was kind of like the Broadway show Rock of Ages with different music. Overall, loved it! See it if you love music from the 60's, and you were a hippie at that time.

    Summer of Love

    by mac11146 on 7/5/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

I thought that the play was well done. There was a good story line and the music played well with that story line. I have already recommended it to others.

Summer of Love was a top notch show

    by Courts03 on 7/5/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

This was my first time to the Ogunquit Playhouse so I wasn't sure what to expect as far as the level of experience and professionalism of the cast & crew. It was really a first rate production all around. I love local theater at all levels, but this is definitely a top notch theater. I was very impressed. It was just as good as seeing any Off Broadway show in Boston. 'Summer of Love' was really fun. I was born in the late 60s & still knew all of the songs. It is amazing to see how we can still relate to so many of the things that were relevant then 40+ years later. A great show for any (adult) age audience as long as you understand that it's true to the times (war, sex, drugs, & rock & roll are a part of those times)! Hats off to the entire production.

Summer of Love is a blast to the past.

by Dewydouglas on 7/5/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

Rich and diverse characters with great musicality. The show is poignant without the political rhetoric. Thoroughly enjoyed the stage performances of the entire cast. Michelle Lee you still rock. Kudos to all for a splendid evening at the Ogunquit theatre. You never disappoint.

    Summer of Love was awesome

    by Postalworker13 on 7/5/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

The actors did a great job 'recreating' 1967; the songs selected fit the storyline perfectly.

A whole lot of groovy fun!

    by Nebulad21 on 7/4/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

I think this is a very enjoyable little chunk of history with a delightfully sung score of favorites from the late 60s and early 70s. Main cast were sensational, supporting cast was phenomenal! Great to see "Karen Cooper Fairgate MacKenzie" again!

    A 'Trip' back in Time

by alsov on 7/4/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

Current generations may never understand the happenings of that era ... this was a definite 'Trip' back to a turbulent and uncertain time. The music was an awesome collection which brought you back to re-live it ! The cast did a tremendous job of keeping you engaged in their performance and singing was amazing.

Summer of Love was a disappointment!

    by nag9ave on 7/3/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

The performance of Summer of Love that we saw in Ogunquit was a real disappointment. The performances were flat, almost forced; the singing of some of the characters was poor - off-key and hard to hear; and Michelle Lee (the "big star" of the show) recited her lines without too much feeling or enthusiasm and sang poorly. I don't know how the show could be so mediocre, given the great music of the time. The performance really didn't enthrall the audience, most of whom just sat there expressionless. Too bad. I'm glad we had 2-for-1 tickets; I would have been very upset if I had paid full price. I've seen better musicals at high schools and at local community theaters.

    Outstanding show

by Hanley on 7/3/11Ogunquit Playhouse - Ogunquit

The show was outstanding. The cast magnificent. All of the voices were unbelieveable. We were disappointed that more people were not in attendance. They missed a great performance.
