Ready for Broadway?
by LJMass on 7/11/11Ogunquit Playhouse - OgunquitThe Summer of Love was a fun experience but is not ready for Broadway in it's current arrangement. The idea that an audience will sit through what is essentially a 25 act play (each song is the end of each act) won't fly. There needs to be a bit more dialogue to set up the reason the hippie movement and anti-war movement started, upfront and not in the background videos around act 13' it might help to know why Holly is there, and the songs are too much of the dialogue and the lyrics don't always fit the context, maybe one line does but that doesn't mean you run the whole tune as dialogue! Maybe a few of the songs could be cut, perhaps the ones that were not written yet during the period depicted! The company is certainly up to the task! They were great Michelle Lee and Missy Drowse were solid and Soara-Joye Ross was outstanding with her Janis Joplin tune, the male lead was good but you ended up wishing he would be the one getting slapped around by Moma and not Curtis. On a technical note the amplified mikes on each actor come across as too brassy and loud I would have enjoyed a more acoustic tone.
